That's several steps lower than the top end I tested. I had several loads that averaged into the 2900s with no signs of pressure.

My goal with this rifle was to push a 140 VLD @ 2850. When I got there and was shooting in the 0.3" and 0.4" range I decided to call her good.

I'm in the process of putting together a 260. Surgeon RSR w/ Krieger 1:8 5R 26" tube. I'll only be shooting the heavy stuff 139+. And I only want to use Lapua brass. So is it better to neck up 243->6.5 or neck down 308->6.5?

I've been running the same basic load all year.
22" Lilja 1:8" twist, I believe 3-groove barrel. Jet brake / adapter & 308 suppressor.
Winchester 7mm/08 brass, sized to 260 Remington
Exactly 43.5gr H4350, from an RCBS Chargemaster 1500
CCI BR2 primer
Lapua 139gr Scenar, COAL ~2.82"

I use a Dillon RL550B with a Whidden Gunworks billet toolhead. "Floating" dies. Decapper in station-1 to poke out any stray corn-cob media, powder-funnel in station-2, Redding Competition seating die in station-3. Station 4 empty.

I use other tools and toolheads for brass prep.

I haven't cleaned this rifle in what seems like FOREVER. Probably <500rds though.

Lately I'm noticing pressure signs I don't recall seeing before. Definitely with increasing frequency. Sometimes the bolt is a little harder to open and / or shiny spot on the brass.

When I worked-up this load, I had a mean of exactly 2800fps with 43.5gr H4350.

Today with 43.0gr H4350 over an Oehler 35P, I got:

I don't have a good explanation for why 43.0gr H4350 is giving me significantly MORE velocity that 43.5gr. Except maybe pressures have been gradually increasing as this barrel gets dirtier?

Also took my first foray into Reloder 17. 42.0 grains. No pressure signs.

What are your groups like @ 43gr? I have loaded up to 42.5 but accuracy was terrible. My best group was @ 41gr, and was wondering if I could reach the next accuracy node, but going much higher than 42.5 scares me a bit, if only because it is so much higher than Alliant's data though I too didn't have any pressure signs @ 42.5gr. I'm shooting 140gr Berger HPBT LR's through a 28" McGowen barrel in a Savage action.

I had an 8lb jug of H4350 I bought back in 2006. It took me a while to get around to working up a load, and then I haven't been able to find any H4350 for probably the last year. Finally gave up and started eyeing RL17. My intent was to find something with similar velocity (and accuracy). 42.5gr RL17 seems to fit that bill. I didn't see any pressure signs with 43gr of RL17, but the velocity was a little disconcerting AND the numbers weren't as good.

Like I mentioned, this barrel hasn't been cleaned in FOREVER and I'm not particularly adept at shooting groups anyway.

In 3 of my 260s I use H4831SC.

Here is my load.On each rilfe it varies between 48 grs to 48.3 grs.

After changing my shooting rest setup to accommodate the flat foreend of my rifle, I found two accurate loads using RL 17 and two with H4350, but does anyone know why I'm getting much lower MV's than other people here?

260 Rem, Savage varmint action, 28" McGowan barrel, 139gr Scenar, Remington brass, CCI BR-2, 0.010" off the lands.

41.0 gr of RL17 gets me sub 0.6" 5-shot groups with my shooting, but an average MV of only 2580, less than Alliant's published data.

42.7 gr of RL17 gets me same sized groups, but MV average 2715, way less than the 2850+ people are getting. There's no pressure signs with this load.

42.0 gr of H4350 gets me same accuracy and an MV average of 2373, 43:0 gr gets me an MV average of 2423.

Both of these powders should give much faster speeds. If you have a looser bore. You might have to increase the charge weight.

I have used 4350, Rl-17,and 4831sc. All of these powders work around the same speeds or close. Chrono might be off. I would go down the check list and see what it is. I have 5 260s. All produce a close numbers besides barrel lenths. Good luck and post your results

I never thought about that. I'm guessing there's a relationship between bore diameter and pressure, and therefore velocity?

I contacted ChadTRG42 and he suggested that some barrels take ~150-200 rounds to come up to speed... and that is the case.

After 150 rounds down the barrel... I shot 50 rounds of my load with 42.7gr of RL17 and got an average MV of 2830fps, SD of around 11, forgot what the ES was but it was pretty low too. I know it's only my technique that keeps me from getting sub-0.5 MOA groups

I have read the .260 threads, but was just wanting to confirm were to start before I start buying some bullets. It was very late in the day and overcast, so I think these numbers are suspect.

Then I switched to a different lot (2CN71) of Winchester 7mm-08 brass. Same prep, same load, EXCEPT that this time I loaded up 100rds using 2 Chargemaster 1500's. Again the lighting was less than ideal so I'm not sure these are really valid.

i loaded up to 44 gr of h4350 in a 28 inch sheilin with 142 smks today. at 44gr powder and 2.80 oal i got 2840fps. does that seam slower than it should be to anyone else? round count on the barrel is 900ish and im using nosler 260 brass and a fed match primer

That sounds a little slow according to the amount of powder. I would think around 2870 to 2910. A 28" barrel give some gains.

I use this as my main powder for my 260s. I have tried others like RL-17 h4350. but I like this powder the most. It gives me the best results.
I shoot 139s lapuas. It gives me single digit SDs.

Id just like to say I had a 260 built over here in england last week and did not have much time to set up and test for a match today. I went to the range saturday and used the 139Scenar/H4350 Loads suggested on here and was immediately pleased with sub 1/2 moa accuracy at 100 yards. My chrono was playing games and would not give me a reading so I just went with the hottest load I had made up and shot well at 43.4gr at 10 thou off the lands and extimated a 2750fps speed. Im pleased to say I shot the tournament today with an open mind, won it with a clean max score at 100 yards and scoring shots at 300 and 500 on a prairie dog target without sighters. I also posted a 0,9" group at 300 and a 0.8" at 500 so am thrilled and thankfull to all those who plugged this load combo as a tried and tested number. I will certainly be back here for more info in the future as you guys got my 300win mag shooting too with your suggestions.

With Remington brass I get ejector marks but with Nosler brass I get a clean case that runs about 3 loads longer. I have no idea why this is happening with the RP brass but it seems that other guys are having the same problem even with different loads and powders- FYI

Have a questions for you, there seems to be a disparity between what quickload comes up with and what the Hodgdon site advertises. I was going to try out a load of 123 smk's and about 45.5 grains of H4350. When I asked a friend of mine to run it thru quickload he came uo with 44 grains being way overpressure ( 61k'ish ). I know that they don't advertise a 123 smk load on their site so I was going somewhere in the middle of their 120 and 125 load.

Any idea why the difference?

Yes, there is a lot of spread between Hodgdon's website data with certain bullets close in weight. I'm not sure why. For example, the 142 SMK shows a max charge of 44.5 grains of H4350, and a max of 42.0 grains for the 140 Partition. The 44.5 charge would be a very hot load, and should be over max in most rifles. The only thing I would recommend is work up the loads in your rifle to see what you get. If you want to find out where your max pressure is quickly, load up 1 round each in .5 grain increments, starting at about 43.5 with the 123 grain bullet, and go up to about 45 or 46. Once you find this max, start load development about 1.5 to 2 grains below max, and you'll find a good load in there somewhere.
Quickload has many variables that can alter the pressure output in that program. I would use it as a guide, unless you can enter your exact specs of the case and chamber.

My latest testing with .260 brass from .308 Lapua casings. Rifle is an FN SPR with a Rock Creek barrel 1 in 8 twist 5R grooves, 25.5 inch Rem varmint contour.

Brass was sized in 7mm08 then .260 Rem, trimmed,turned, fireformed, annealed and turned again. (Tell me about it!)

I worked on the low side of my nodes with RP brass to account for the loss of case volume. Temp was 78-84 deg F and winds were 10-15mph and switching like a woman in walk in closet.

BR2's, 139 Scenars, oal 2.830 (0.030 jump)

lower node
41.2 H4350; 2679 Av, ES 19, 6 SD, group 1/2"tall 1 "wide in 10-15mph winds

41.4 H4350; 2688 Av, ES 13, 2 SD, group 3/8" tall and 3/4" wide

should have done 41.6 here

upper node (fixed aggregious typos!)
42.7 H4350; 2792 Av, ES 22, 8 SD, group 1/8" tall and 3/4" wide

42.9 H4350; 2816 Av, 12 ES, 2 SD, group 1/3" tall and 1 1/8" wide

These seem very good for now and show no worrisome signs like with the RP brass and their 43 plus grains of H4350. Previously I had used GM210s, WLR's and Wolf primers. This was my first with BR2's as well.

I've only manage to put 50 rounds through my Mike Bryant 260 Remington, just trying to work up a load for whitetails. Still need to work on my 200 yard zero but ran out of ammo.
