260 or 6.5CM pros and cons input please

Well I have a new project calling me. This is wil be a large frame "AR". I have pretty much settled on a chambering that uses 6.5mm bullets. So that is either the 6.5CM or .260.

If I go with the 6.5mm I will be in a waiting game for the parts I want to use. Can get pretty much all the parts for the .260 now.

What I am interested in hearing from you folks using the .260 In a AR platform is what about magazin OAL ? Is there a issue with seating depth?
How about bullet selection....will a gasser shoot VLD'S or will using bullets that tolerate a jump better the smarter choice?

Any other tid bits of advice is welcome. I have not owned a large frame AR since the early 90's when I had ser. # 9X Stoner SR-25.

I found a deal on a DPMS LR260 and after reading all the stuff about the mag length I decided if I get a 6.5 on an AR platform it will either be a Creedmoor or Grendel.

Good luck, but it definitely looks like the OAL is an issue with the mags in the DPMS.

6.5 Creedmoor. Better overall fit to the magazine constraint, gas volume, port/chamber pressure, etc.

I'm a 260 guy but for an AR platform, the 6.5 Creedmoor is better choice.

If it were me, GAP would get the call for 6.5 Creedmoor AR barrel or better yet a ready to run GAP-10.

When faced with the same issue about a year ago, I decided on a 260 for an AR10.
Everything about the round fits well in the AR10 platform.

I don't shoot VLDs but would guess you'd need to look at something that performs better with a jump. THe mag length will limit how close to the lands you can seat.

That said, my 260 shoots quite nicely with hand loads and a few loads I've bought from SW Ammo.

I read Zak's comparison and it sounds plenty reasonable (good 260 brass can be hard to come by, but the 2 are almost identical in performance)but, having a 260 now, I won't be running out to swap the barrel for a 6.5CM anytime soon.

There are very few factory loads out there for 260, but components about for reloaders, and SW Ammo stuff is top notch.

I have a GAP-10 in 6.5 creedmoor and could not be more pleased. I asked George what load he recommended and he said 130's. I guess the vld will shoot great out of it. I don't have my reloading stuff setup, so I can't give you my experience with them.

The 120 & 140 Hornady Amax shoots great so far.

if you reload 260 brass shouldnt be a problem, just re-size 7mm-08 or 243 brass. I have sized 308 and all have worked out of my DPMS 260 Rem.

And the 308 works great in a large ar frame and snice the 260 Rem is based off the 308.......

I have both in ARs, each with 1:8.5 twist 24" barrels. I would be very hard pressed to choose between them. If forced to make a call, I guess I would go with the 6.5 CM due to the fantastic accuracy I get with factory 140 gr. Amaxs. I can do as well with my 260, but it takes handloads to do it.

Also, I have found that 140 gr VLDs shoot very well out or either of them. In fact, it is my preferred bullet for the 260. I think Berger is still telling folks to give their VLDs a try with a jump -- because it works pretty well when you find the sweet spot.

My first choice would be the 6.5CM, but I can not find all he parts I need for it. I did contact GAP, and they do not build off of other folks receivers now days I was told.

Still up in the air on what to do so I am not going to jump yet.

George replied to me here a few weeks ago regarding a GAP barrel for my LMT MWS. His answer was if I had an MWS barrel extension for him that he could do it.

My plan is to burn up the LMT 260 barrel and steal the extension off of it.

I would assume based off this that they will install barrels on other receivers.
