300 PRC update

I had 25 cases left and did 5 rounds each every .2 grains. For whatever reason I also had it in my mind that I was pushing the upper end of published #'s there, but see now that I had some more room to play with. If I had to guess, there's another node somewhere in the mid-upper 75gr range. I'll probably explore that in the future, also. Still just kinda playing around and letting the barrel settle in and getting a feel for things. Now that my cases are all fire formed I'm going to do just a little more testing to verify, then take it live at longer range.

Even at 2915fps Avg, though, if it continues to group and ES/SD stays in that ballpark, I will probably run it. Solidly supersonic to almost 2000yd with 225's, would be over 2000yd with the 230 A-tip. I can leave well enough alone. Another 85fps at the muzzle doesn't add up to much way out there. That being said, I think the barrel will speed up a little over the next 100 rounds, too.

The first 5 rounds nearly copper plated the bore. After cleaning, the next 5 also heavily coppered, though not as bad. The following 15 were better, and these last 25 barely left anything. So things are starting to smooth out a little. I'll see if I can borrow a bore-scope next week and check the throat out.

I may have missed it, are you using the saami reamer? Any throat/freebore alterations?

While I originally liked my McMillan Game Hunter stock for a lightweight 300WM hunting rifle (Christensen Ridgeline action, Razor AMG, 8.9 lbs total), some recent interactions with the people at the company, including the owner, have led me to choose to avoid purchasing from them in the future. They showed they are not interested in customer experience or feedback and are clearly more wanting to claim they are right without truly listening. Their response showed no interest in anything other than telling me how I was wrong and they were legally in the clear on everything they do. Not a good way to try and build a customer base. My interactions with Manners, and even MPA, have been pretty much the opposite - they do listen and will engage to understand feedback, and even engage to help educate if there was some misunderstanding behind the feedback. I'll stay away from McMillan and stick to other companies with better customer support.

What happened where they had to be legally in the clear on your rifle?

Another range report.

Temp: 85
Wind: 15 mph and gusty @ ~30 degrees right of front

I ran primarily Reloder 26 @ 75.6 and H1000@ 76.2, both with 225s. The extra temp definitely made all rounds run a little hot. The RL 26 load showed minor pressure signs and was not very accurate. Luckily, I had loaded 7 rounds at 75.4 and these yielded similar velocities to the 75.6 load at 70 degrees.

I also fire formed 10 RWS 8x68S cases using some extra 200 ELDs I have on hand. Lastly, I tried out CCI BR-2 primers with both H1000 and RL26. All shot at 300 yards.

76.2gr H1000 w/215M Primers:
As with all loads today, this ran hot. I think the added temp took it out of the accuracy node. The ES and SD bore that out.
Shots: 5
Avg: 2889
ES: 32
SD: 14.1
Notes: This load is typically in the 2860-2870 range.

76.2gr H1000 w/BR2 Primers:
Avg: 2872
ES: 13
SD: 5.2
Notes: Much more in line with where my H1000 loads were shooting before. Wind was pushing it side to side, but vertical spread was .82" @ 300.

75.6gr RL 26 w/215M Primers:
Shots: 5
Avg: 2985.2
ES: 20
SD: 6.6
Notes: More in line with the 75.9gr load I did earlier. I got some minor pressure signs.

75.4gr RL 26 w/215M Primers:
Shots: 7
Avg: 2969
ES: 12
SD: 5.0
Notes: No pressure signs

75.6gr RL 26 w/BR2 Primers
Shots: 5
Avg: 2953
ES: 12
SD: 5.3
Notes: RL 26 has a much more substantial drop in velocity using these primers vs the H1000. Similar ES/SD to the 75.4 load.

Lastly, the fire forming. I used 72gr H1000 and a 200gr ELD. Below is a pic of a new 8x68S case (left), a fire formed case (middle), and a fired Hornady 300 PRC case.

Of note: I had to toss 5 out of 68 Hornady cases due to primer pockets this go. Those RWS cases have very tight pockets.

Fallbrook California.
Fallbrook California.

Thanks. Was hoping for something online.

Checked around 5 or 6 local shops around here and no one can get it... at this point, despite having some 8133, H1000 and Retumbo... Reloder 26 is like that Unicorn... just want to get it, almost don't care if it performs. lol. Apparently it exists, right?

Range report with H1k and 215 Berger's. Hornady brass. Cci250 primers. 26 inch tube and TB Ultra 7. Setteled on the below load for now..

79.26 gr H1k shot pretty well. .46 inch 5 round group. Average 2975 FPS. SD was 2.6. ES was 6. 3.007 COAL

Going to shoot these again and see if I can duplicate results. Had a few loads group in the high .3s but SD and ES were not close to the above load.

So in the indoor range with built-in optical chronographs I'm getting 2920fps avg with 74.6gr RL26 and a 225 ELDM. I got outdoors today to set/check zero and was averaging 2946fps with the same load from a Labradar. I tend to trust the Labradar more. 8-shot group plugged them all into .571" with 12 fps ES and 5.4 SD. Should be able to get on some steel this weekend. I think I'm just going to stick with this load for the time being until I can try out the A-tips.

Can’t even begin to imagine what that sounds like indoors ?

I shot the first 5 rounds to verify stability&sanity (shouldn't be an issue but you never know) and have run it with the can on ever since. I will say it's much more pleasant for me to shoot from the prone outside than off a bench. I kind of expected the opposite.

Have you found your pressure ceiling with H1K and 225ELDM?

Fantastic! Sounds like a great load.

Very interesting... 79.26 grains. How did you settle on that number?

Guys need help with Stock for my 300 PRC. Want stock to be somewhat light something like McMillan Adjustable Game Scout does anyone have one of these? But I would like stock or chassis to take longer magazine 3.850. Was looking at Whiskey-3 chassis because it will take 3.850 mags length but its over 4lbs. Any suggestions will be appreciated thank you.
I'm doing my build in a Manners EH1A

I narrowed it down to the 2 best grouping loads of 79, 79.5. They we're just about the same FPS in a higher node I found. So I just split the two and shot with it. Higher then 79.5 I saw a larger increase in FPS and below 79 dropped off slightly. Splitting it gives me a little room on each end while maintaining the same velocity.

The last I was tracking, Foundation doesn't make any stocks in long action. Am I missing something? I even wrote them on FB a few days ago and they said it was in the works but still a ways away.
Have you looked at say a Foundation Stock? They are right around 4lbs for the long action version...just under for short action. I'm going to put my 300PRC into a JAE stock....but that's 5.76lbs as currently configured...and I'm going to add an ARCA rail and bag rider...so much heavier.

Yeah the brass! Rocketmandb brass worked perfectly. Bummer. Thanks for asking
What was it doin? I’ve had same problem sometimes. New brass works great, full size after firing, fire again and sticks when I pull back. Barrel is broken in and speeding up tho. 74.0 grains of rl26 is giving me 2935fps! Might be pressure sign I’m thinking.

What die? My Hornady one was terrible. My custom Redding type S howerer has had no issues.

Sounds like a die issue. I know there was a guy shooting 7-300 PRC with 300 PRC bushing dies that wasn't getting enough body sizing and had cases sticking.

I'm only on my 2nd firing so far so I can't speak for my setup.

More than what’s available in all of Aus...

I didn't intend to get this much, but here are some of the extremes I went to:

- For months, every day I'd do at least one, if not multiple online searches for the powder
- I called every local store (all out)
- I called every store in decent-sized towns/cities within a 4-hour drive
- Just under half of what I got was from dribs and drabs of getting it online.
- I drove to Reno (3 hours each way) to get two pounds.
- Most of it I got because I reached out to a friend who is an FFL and asked him to call his distributors. One came through - by the time he'd gotten a hold of me, 2/3 of what the distributor had gotten in had been taken. They had 14 lbs left, and I told him to grab it all.

Perseverance (or obsession) pays off :)
