300 PRC update

I’d love one for my DTA, but I can’t find anyone that will spin one up to my specs. Either they don’t flute barrels, or they won’t do the twist rate I want.

Did you try ES tactical or Proof? Short Action Customs and Dmr does DTA barrels too.

So I’m trying to get a barrel built, but my barrel guy won’t go lower than 1-9.75 twist.
What’s everybody running on their 1000yrd plus rifles?
I asked for 9.25 or even 9.5 twist.

My thoughts are...I keep throwing money at the screen every time something like this is announced. I pre-ordered 500 of the 250's and 100 of the 230's.

So with the leftover sized and primed Hornady Brass I had before parting ways with the Hornady Dies, I just did some workup with 215 Bergers today with H1k in .5 gr increments. CCI 250 Primers. Loaded with an fx120i with 419 auto setup. (these things are awesome by the way). Brass was full length sized with a neck bushing with 2 thou tension. Used the Gurard trimmer on all the brass also. Loaded to 20 thou off the lands for testing with the Berger 215 Hybrids. COAL 3.700.

Rifle is a 26 inch proof Suppressor was a TB Ultra 7. Magnetospeed V3 Chrono. 85 degrees in the shade with no direct sun. 20% humidity. Allowing rifle to cool between 3 shots at a time roughly. Shot two foulers after a clean rifle. Let cool, and then began. Started low as I didn't know what to expect.

UPDATED with my sweet spot

H1000 ___ FPS
79.26 _____2975 SD of 2.6. 5 shot groups under .45

I’m just keeping with H1000. Works for me and I keep it stocked for my 300 Win mag

I also am sticking to H1k unless I just can't get it to shoot. I have about 20 lbs of it and use it for all my win mags too. I do have 12 lbs of h4831 sitting here also if I start having issues with h1k in the 300 PRC.

Let's get to the meat of the day first: Reloder 26.

My first load was 74.1 gr. All groups today were at 300 yards and with the 225 gr ELDM (as always). I had expected this load to fall in the mid-2700 fps range. When I fired, I almost missed the target - as in the WHOLE target - because it fired high. The Labradar registered 2907 fps. The total group averaged 2913 with a 13 ES and 6.7 SD. Wow. Group size was 1.27" at 300 yards.

Next, I did my neck tension test. I ran groups at .001, .002, .003, and .004 inches of neck tension. I'm not really a fan of .001, but it clearly won the spread contest. This test was with 76.2 gr of H1000.

- This powder warrants further attention. I'll be doing work up with this next, probably starting at 82.5 and going to like 85 (if the case capacity will allow)

Overall, another great day at the range.

I ordered the type S neck bushing full length sizing die. Had to go the custom route as they aren't making the type S for retail yet. 176 bucks for a die plus shipping... but it's worth it.. I've also found the 334 neck bushing is working the best with the Hornady brass.

Yea...I got both the free shipping and the birthday code all wrapped up in one....I had a wish list of little odds and ends...so I got a bunch of stuff with the free shipping and birthday code....pre-ordered the seating stem for the A Tips as well.

Another range report - this time with RL 33.

I did groups at 82.5, 83. 83.5, 84, and 84.5 grains of RL 33. None were particularly impressive .

The best from a spread perspective was 83 gr, which had a 19 ES and 7.9 SD with an average of 2862 fps. I might play around a little more around this load, but I'm not going to do too much more with this powder.

For anyone interested, here are the average fps of each load:

82.5: 2837
83.0: 2862
83.5: 2875
84.0: 2897
84.5: 2917

EDIT: I started getting mild compression loading at 84.0, and a little more at 84.5, which is why I stopped there.

I also played a little more with RL 26.

Best loads came out at 75.4 and 75.6.

75.4: Avg - 2970, ES 15, SD 6.2 - 5 shots
75.6: Avg - 2971, ES 10, SD 5.5 - 5 shots

Groups were hard to come by as the mirage was fierce. The 75.6 load was also one of my better ones from the last trip, so I think I'm going with this as the "champion" load for this powder. I'll also be playing a little on the lower end - probably high 73s to low 74s.

Also, I did another neck tension test, this time with RL 26. Again, the lower neck tensions did better. I'll be loading at .001 neck tension in this rifle with both H1000 and RL 26 from here on out.

I've been kinda following along various threads on different forums... about had myself talked into replacing my low-mileage .300WM barrel with a .300 PRC... then read some of those threads thru, start to finish... now, between the one-brass thing and the relative lack of *good* dies (kudos to those loading with the Hornady dies, just not my flavor), I think I may run this thing til it dies and in the mean time, get barrel, reamer, brass, dies, etc. all ordered up along with a new chassis and give the old blaster a face-lift later in the year.

On another note, anyone have an AMP and fire formed brass they can send to AMP for the AZTEC code?

I didn't notice this until now...but someone must have sent some 300 PRC brass in. As of May 7th you use 031 B for the Pilot Code...and download latest software ofcourse.

While patiently waiting for my Savage 110flp 300win to be rebarreled by Moon Roberts at crecent customs the 300prc was released, lucky me. I had him put a 26" M40 bartlien on it and I decided to switch it to 300PRC. I let him pick the twist rate and he talked to Frank at Bartlien who advised him go 1:8.5 twist. So I've broken it in with 225Hndy Match which shot about 3/4". Tested hand loads yesterday with 225ELDM H-1000 77.8gr max charge @2880fps
Best (3rnd) group was .300" at 20K off lands TL=2.680 but it showed pressure signs so I need to back it off.
My issue is I don't have CIP bottom metal so my best mag fed loads were 0.5" at a TL=3.630 and 77.8gr H-1000

I'll pass and use what I got gambling that another company will soon make 300PRC brass. I have enough to get me into next year.

Was able to get my barrel spun up this afternoon. Will start load dev/break-in next week, probably with 225 ELDM's. 1:9.5-1:9 gain twist, was able to finish at 31". I measured the groove dia. at the muzzle and it wasn't bell-mouthed as far as I could tell so I didn't cut the last inch off of the blank, maybe only 1/4" or so... If it doesn't group well I might try cutting it back.

Looking to run 230 or 250 A-tips. Will have to try both for velocity and see which wins out in the long run.

Today I was cleaning some of my rifles and noticed that I have a Hoptic 2 round quiver on most of my rifles. I was like, "Oh yea, I'm going to need one for my 300PRC". Ofcourse nothing I have comes close to fitting in a 300PRC. So, a quick email off to Matt Stoner at HopticUSA to ask, "What quiver can I use for the 300PRC?".

Matt must have been checking his messages right then and there because it wasn't 30 seconds later I got a reply. He said he's going to do a production run in July of some 338 quivers and he will open up the mouth enough to fit in the 300PRC. I'm already ahead of you guys on the 'List'. If you guys are interested just email Matt stoner at HopticsUSA and let him know your interest. I figure anything we can do to help get accessories companies offer us options in 300PRC is a big help to those that follow behind us on this journey of the 300PRC.

Oh...and he did mention a 50 cal version to be released in June....I don't have a Fifty...but I may buy a quiver and mount it to the side of my 22lr target rifle to make some people shake their head at me at the local range.

I just got my new 300 PRC ... been waiting for 5 months for it! it's built on an MPA ESR chassis with a Defiance action, a Hart 1/9 29 .75 inch barrel, a Yankee Hill suppressor, and a triggertech diamond trigger. It has been a tack driver, just got i zeroed and hit two small bull's-eyes at 500 yards. I intend for this gun to go out to over 2000 yards, and with the Valdada Recon G2 scope I have 35 mils of elevation!

You will want a 300WM CIP length magazine & bottom metal to ensure you have space with a 300 PRC.

Unless you already have an M5 inlet, you’ll almost certainly need to have the bottom of the stock opened up. The AICS mag is a bit wider than the BDL mag.

There are a lot of bottom metal options out there. I’m arbitrarily leaning towards the Hawkins Precision M5 LA CIP for my upcoming PRC build, but maybe LRI will have a CIP-length option done early enough. We’ll see.

As far as magazines go, I like MDT in general, and snagged a couple of their 5rd 300WM 3.850in mags when they were 50% off last Thanksgiving. Alas, haven’t had anything to feed through them yet.
