300 PRC update

There are a ton of loads in this thread...but there is also a thread in the reloading section about loading for the 300PRC. Many people were using H1000 at first...I don't think they are still using it though...I could be wrong. My load today with RL-26, 230gr A-Tips, and ADG Brass was 2980fps out of a 28" Bartlein....and the 1 Mile target wasn't all that difficult today.
However....I'm running way hotter than you probably would ever want to...because I'm stupid.
I personally prefer RL-26...then Vhitavoruori N565....then Retumbo.

I am running 2860fps on a 26inch with ADG and Rl26, so on a 28 you can't be running that hot.
I have a pretty happy node but I am debating about going up one.
2,887fps in a 26" with N565 and Hornady brass here. Ran my numbers compared to the 225g ELDM and I think you really need to be moving the A-tips mid 2,900's to get the most out of them in the PRC. Thinking of just switching back to the 225g ELDM and saving some money on components.
I'm in the same boat here. The 230s shot really well for me at further distance and will need to buy some more for loading up another 150-200 of them. As an alternatiave I have 400 of the 225s sitting here I may just use up. Its hard to justify the cost of the 230s over the 225s for the slight gain.
Hm makes sense, I will take any help the A-Tips provide even if I am pushing the same velocity as the ELD-M. I wonder if the a-tips do better going trans/sub sonic thne the ELD and if they are acutally more consitant. About to go to a 2000y ELR match so I'll see.
My gun and load dev work has been focused around building this out for the NF ELR match next month. Shooting targets mostly the 900-1400 yard range, with a couple of them out to 2k.
If I have time I may go see if I can find a higher node without overpressure signs.

Won the local ELR match shooting the my 300 PRC.
Went 7 for 10 on a 2080y 1.6 MOA target. And then 2 for 10 on a 2680y 1.4 MOA target. Beating out everyone with 375s and 416s. Thing is a laser.

So...>I'm assuming those A-Tips in the ADG brass worked really well....I just got done reloading 100 230's in ADG brass and RL-26....maybe I'll have similar
Nice...very nice...I have stepped down a grain....as it warmed yesterday...I was pushing 2980fps.....recoil impulse told me it was time to back it down a little...today I modified my recipe....I'll head to the range again Wednesday and make sure my old data for that load is still good.
My vertical spread yesterday was almost non-existent.

R26 should be faster...but I've found that Reloader powders are dirtier. I had a problem with RL16 in my 6.5 causing bad carbon ring...is this just me? Or have others had issues as well? How dirty is RL26? H1000 although slower, is very temp stable, which is why I picked that one. I hope I didn't pick the wrong powder...
I've found RL-26 to be dirtier as well. I like the speed though...so I've been using it lately. However...I just ordered 8lbs of N565...seems that's all they had at Powder Valley...after being out for months. N565 is temp stable and almost gives me the speeds of RL-26...but man is it expensive....in relation to RL-26.
At 50F I was at 2960 or so...at 72F I was at 2980 or so...you'd call that temp unstable...but as long as it is consistent on a curve...I don't mind....however...I gotta develop a summer time load and a winter time load....but I don't store ammo more than a few weeks on the bolt actions. N565 has been real temp stable for me so far....but I've yet to shoot in 80F+ days...so we will see...soon.
For those not in the ZCO thread....here is a new ZCO 5-27x56 with the MPCT3 Reticle....Cerakoted FDE...with a 20MOA Spuhr mount...Cerakoted FDE...sitting on my 300PRC....a really nice match this is:

The base cerakote of the MDT Chassis is the same FDE as the scope.....the base cerakote for the Action and barrel is slightly darker than the Chassis and scope.....then I sponged transferred the other colors in using Krylon Camo Series.
The good thing is...later on if I want to remove the paint..I can..without damaging the cerakote...because cerakote is tough.
My intention was not to be snipery or operator as fuck....but to simply not look like every rifle that day at the range...plus...if you have everything looking all neat...you are afraid of dinging it...if you can paint a $5k rifle and a $4k scope and rings....then maybe you can concentrate on using the system as a tool to get work done...instead of worry about minor scratches as you gently place it in your safe wrapped in cashmere.
I can give you the 230gr A-Tip measurement later tonight when I return home from work....13hr days man......getting to me. I can also give you the 250 A-tips if you like. I don't have any Bergers in house...I have some 245 EOL's on the way though.

I use an old Savage stamped Accurate mag for 338LM. Fits and feeds perfect in a Bravo.
Well I finally made it to the range and have some 20” data to share.
This was a brand new barrel shooting factory hornady 225 eld-m. This was my first time using lab radar so while I shot the entire 20rd box I only have valid velocity readings for 17 rds. All shots were fired with Nomad-30 attached.
The average velocity = 2721 FPS.
High = 2756 FPS
Low = 2685 FPS
ES = 71 FPS
This equates to roughly a 22 FPS loss per inch from hornady stated test barrel velocity.

Has anyone tried out the new 208 LRHT from Berger? Might be able to eek out a few more FPS while matching the bc of the 215.
I am going to be picking up a 300PRC. Ran the ballistics with the 338 Lapua. They are neck and neck out to 2000 yards and a lot cheaper to shoot. This is just a great cartridge and like said above, should have been out a long time ago. Can’t wait to take one out to a mile and past.
For reference and to add to, out of a brand new 22.5” barrel I fired one 212 ELDX at 2835fps and fired one 220eldm at 2747.
FINALLY got this build together... gonna do barrel break in this weekend and get initial velocities. ADG brass 225 ELD 215M... I've got RL26, H1000, N570 to play with. Any recommendations for starting charge weights??
I'd just say...don't think the initial velocities are set in stone....the ADG brass is thick...and I initially ran my necks through a mandrel die to give less neck tension. That first loading on ADG brass and a normal sizing die...will make the neck tension way too tight for me. Second firing and a .336 bushing for me...everything is golden...and I still run through a neck mandrel just to make sure. Barrel will speed up as well...at some point...less than 200 rounds.
Starting charge?....I'd make a few starting at 70gr and work my way up. The 225 ELD-M is a fine bullet. IF I always shot 1000 yards and less...I'd use it exclusively.

Currently running them all through a mandrel... this brass is very impressive so far. Thinking to use the 225 until barrel speeds up and the sub 1k then work on a 230 A-tip load for 1k+
I see they are pointed from the factory thats why the bc is so high. OTM and PV have some in stock so I may pick up a box to try out.
Still no RL26 so Ill be sticking with the H1000 I have on hand, enough to burn out the barrel and some extra IMR 7977. I might do a min charge (70gr) of 7977 under a 225 ELD for 50 rounds just to fireform the brass and break in the barrel then load 76.5-77.5 of H1000 with 225 ELD and 215 Hybrids and see where things fall out. Depending on speeds after 200 rds I might try the new 208 LRHT. Barrel should be done in about a week.
Went out tonight to run my handloads across the chrony and get an idea where I need to be for a powder charge. After doing that, I've got a couple questions....

1. I was hoping to be a little bit faster with the 225 ELD M. I'm guessing to get faster I'd need to try a different powders?
2. I was thinking usually a barrel would have a low node and a high node..... I'm only seeing one node around 76 grs. Am I missing a second higher node somewhere in my data?
3. Given how close the node appears to be around 76.1 that's what I'm going to target. Any reason I might run into trouble only running at 2780 fps assuming this load actually groups well?
My goal is to use this load for shooting between 1000-2000 yds.

This is why I always load two ladders worth. I'll run one, and then the second is used to validate areas of the first, or to refire certain loads that either miss on the chrono or are out of whack.
How many bullets do you have down the barrel? Also, I think the RPR is 26" on the barrel, correct?
Last weekend I helped a friend do load development on his carbon-barreled hunting rifle (26" Bartlein barrel - the whole rifle weighs like 6 lbs!). Factory 225s were getting him in the low-mid 2900s (~2930, if I remember correctly). So, 2850 on the factory 225s seems a bit on the low side. And we found a good node at ~2880-2900 with the ladder.
Interestingly, the factory ammo out of his rifle shot horribly - and I mean HORRIBLY. He was lucky to get 1.5 MOA on a 5-shot group - and it's not him, or me, because he's also had other competition shooters get the same results. He wasn't planning on getting into reloading now, but I convinced him to let me load up a ladder using RL26 and Berger 230s. The ladder was very consistent (and actually better groups throughout the whole ladder than Hornady factory!).
As mentioned, we found a node at the 2880 range, then tried to load some rounds at the range to validate. Unfortunately, the wind was really blowing and it was tough to get the portable scale just right, so the validation rounds were a bit hot at just above 2900, but they still grouped okay (and had a 5 SD...). I'm loading up some more for him at the proper charge weight for the next trip.
And oh yeah, he's ordering reloading stuff
