308 AR ejection question

So I just finished a 308 AR build (DPMS pattern) and I decided to cycle through a few "dead" rounds that I reloaded (no powder or new primer, just a resized case and a bullet) by hand via charging handle. What I found is that every once in a while the ejector would not grab the round. I could try again and it usually did it the second time. It's a brand new JP enhanced bolt, and I checked the ejector springs and all seems good. The bolt is properly headspaced too, so nothing wrong there. I have not had time to run it to the range yet, so I don't know if maybe it's just my bad handle pulls. Someone at my local gun store said it may be that the BCG is actually not closing in hard enough with just me pulling the handle, and that when gas runs through it maybe it will work. Any thoughts on this or other suggestions as to what may be wrong? Thanks.

You are trying to diagnose a "hypothetical" ghost in the machine at this point in time that may or may not actually exist under normal conditions and, from the sound of your post above, you realize that its meaningless to worry until you actually get some proper function testing (i.e. - SHOOT IT) underway. If you are getting issues with proper functioning when you actually start shooting your rifle, come back and let us know the specific problems you encounter which could be caused by any number of different things. ;)

I have received incorrect parts before. Double check parts #'s against your order and then on website if that applies. I could see how it would be easy for a supply co to mix up a buffer here, or a spring there.

Full length or just neck resized? If only neck then duh, there's your problem. If fl, lube the shit out of the bcg and really rack the handle, don't slightly let it go. They can be a bit stiff at first, usually from the phosphating. Check that it will actually close when you let the carrier go either from the handle or from the bolt release and do a press check, pushing forward on the recess on the carrier. If it still doesn't go, check your coal. All in all you're probably good to shoot, but better safe than shrapnel.

rideHPD they're full length resized. I'm thinking that was it. I sat there about an hour racking it and playing with it while watching some TV and it seems to have broken in. Maybe I was just pullin weak that day, either way thanks for the help!!

No problem, that's why were here. Were you proned-out behind the gun? Every now and then I'm guilty of short-stroking or not releasing the handle all the way back, partially because of the awkward positioning, but also because I have a std. latch and my scope comes back pretty far. An oversized notch may help avoid operator-induced misfeeds. Let us know if it still acts up after this next time.
