Rifle Scopes 32X vs. 42X

I am loking at a NF BR scope. Either the upper end of 32X or 42X. This scope will be used mainly for a ground hog rifle. And will spend the majority of its time on 16X. So the low end of the power range is of no major concern.

I will be spending some time at the 1,000 yard range punching some paper with this rifle also.

I am a handicapped person so going down range and checking my target after shots is difficult. Thus the reason for wanting the higher end power.

Is there a real difference in seeing bullet holes at extended ranges with the 42X over the 32X?? I am just looking for opinons for a final decision. What are reasonable ranges to be able to see bullet holes from the bench on targets?? What targets, or color of targets do you guys consider optimal to be able to see bullet holes?? Thanks, Tom.

For F-Class/Benchrest the 12X42 is the way to go. I've seen 6mm groups at 600 yards with my 12X42 in good conditions. For the field set on 16X should be little to no difference.

Seeing anything the size of a bullet hole at 1000yds is hard, even under good conditions.

What I would do is get the 32x and a good spotter that has more magnification. My rationale is this, 42x is about 1/3 more than 32x. Targets are incredibly small at 1000yds, bullet holes even smaller, 1/3 more of a "small" is still "small", ie 1mm is now 1.3mm. But that's me. If you can justify that extra 10x, there's no problem with that either. In fact it doesn't cost that much more, but you do lose adjustments between the 32x and 42x models

if you are shooting at paper, past 600 its gonna get extremely hard to see little bullet holes. If you are shooting at paper i recommend shoot-n-c targets or some form of those where when hit it gives off two very contrasting colors. If you are shooting steel, i have had no problem seeing splashes at 1K on 15X hope this helps some. next thing i can tell you is get a good spotter but even then it may not help much more at extended ranges seeing bullet holes

When I shoot steel at 1000yds I can see impact parks with my 12-42. I can see it with my 32, but it is harder. I've never shot paper at 600 so I can't say if you can see bullet holes, but spotting impact on white painted steel is easy.

DocV and Deadly0311 have given good solid,sound advice that is based on experience not just opinion.
Regardless of which scope you choose it should be backed-up by an even better spotter.If you have your heart set on a single unit doing the work,then you may be interested in the March Optics line.

depending on what kind of budget you have, now a days they have the ability to have targets that record where on it the bullet passed through which in turn relays it back to a monitor screen right next to you. Or if you are good with computers and wifi and all that get a video camera set it down range by your target and then take a laptop with you and do a wireless video feed of the target. If this sounds interesting im not the person to ask about it as i dont know shit about technology

I went with the 42 and am happy I did. You always have the option to dial it down. With the 36 of course you do have the option to dial in more.

yes i say get the 32x and save for a good spotter. You being handicapped Defiently need one in my opinion so you can stay at the range longer wihtout being wore out
