So my wife's comp gun is copper fouling the last 8 inches pretty good. I just got a bore scope recently and I have been comparing a couple different rifles. All barrels Ill mention are bartlein 7.5 twist chambered in 6 creedmoor and have shot exclusively hornady 108s. Her gun has about 600 rounds down it and has been cleaned a few times. This last time I clean with JB bore paste and used the bore cam to make sure all copper was gone. After firing about 20 rounds this weekend its fouled as bad as it ever has been. Up untill recently we've been using imr 4166 and it shot great, but after looking at these other barrels Im thinking this fast powder it killing the throat?
My new barrel has maybe 200 rounds down it of 4166 and H4350 and it has what i assume is normal copper fouling after 50 or so shots. Again the throat shows more firecracking than than I would have expected for 200 rounds. Maybe the 4166 i shot through it is pretty rough on it, idk what else. The last barrel Ive compared is my friends that has shot nothing but hornady factory ammo. about 600 rounds also. he has only barely cleaned it one time after about 10 shots and his has less cracking than my 200 rounds barrel and just a few copper streaks in the last 4 inches of barrel. i was impressed by the lack of fouling in his barrel.
So should I try to salvage my wifes barrel that is fouling? if so what can i do to help it out? next one i will try a slower powder to see what difference that makes. i havnt looked at a ton of barrels so how bad off is it really?
