6GT or Dasher Brass from 22-250?

Hi Team.
Has anyone here sized down then fireformed 22-250 in 6 Dasher or GT? I'm about to do a big build for my and my girl, problem here is brass is VERY hard to find and sporadic, and $280 per 100... mental. Also I hunt a fair bit and plan to use the dasher or GT but I will be forever searching for brass if it falls out the window. I would really like to know if anyone has done this... or... if you are at home and have a few spare 22-250 cases and GT or Dasher die would you mind running one through and let me know your results?

Mate it's all brass, some more than others, I waited 9 months for 22 creed on backorder and 6 creed is STILL on backorder. I fireformed heaps of 22-250 brass with excellent results. Though there might be a little bit here and there it's hard to get anything, and I can't trust that many calibers will be available but 22-250 normally is. We don't have pistol powder AT ALL (one shipment came in at over 100 dollars per pound).

There's a hundred reasons why I'm looking at those 2 cartridges and it's not worth going into them all to be honest, I just need to know so I can make a decision, I was meant to find out today but sure enough my buddy couldn't find his stash of 250 brass... ughhg.
Thank you for your question however, but the answer is "It's complicated." If you have a die of either and are willing to have a crack I'd love to see/know your results please.

You can turn 22-250 into both of those cases albeit with a large primer. However, you will have an intermediate fire forming step to blow out the case bodies.

How hard is it to import brass into Australia? If it's as hard as you're implying I would go with a wild cat of 22-250 and modify a set of off the shelf bushing dies.

Not sure how hard bullets are to get down there, but if bullets are readily available, especially the 80 and 90+ grain .224 bullets, I would build a long throat, fast twist .22-250. I like the GT a bunch, own two of them. But when push comes to shove, best to go with what you have than worry with what is virtually unobtainable.

Bro I have a 22-243/22-243AI/22 Creed / 6 creed/ 6.5 WSM etc and more. I'm loading for the missus who is also doesn't like recoil. Surely someone here has a piece of 22-250 brass they can run through a sizer? Surely!?!

A big lot of Lapua brass has come in, Cleavers has shipped out SRP 6.5cm to me in the last couple of days, probably pay to ring around.

Wedgetail Industries do a good blast forwarder, I still think 243w is the logical answer to this, if you are desperate for less recoil than that, straight 6br you WILL get brass. Surely the time cost and additional powder and primers fire forming brass isn't worth the mess around. Buy brass fir an available lowish recoil cartridge then get the barrel chambered to suit.

50/50 looking at the drawings. Looks possible.

Keep in mind though, to make 6gt you'd have to:

- run through sizer. maybe multiple passes though sizer or stepping up with multiple mandrels
- chop off extra neck length with a mini miter saw
- possibly neck turn depending on your 6gt chamber neck
- probably anneal before firing to be safe
- fireform
And then possibly need to do more size or trim depending on the fired dimensions. Also may have to neck turn again to get uniform neck wall.

In a perfect world, you don't neck turn before firing, but neck turn after firing as that will be the most concentric state of the brass.

This is quite a bit of work.

Hey mate thanks and yes it is, but I figure I’ll do 500 or so at once, we just had some good success with ADI 308 brass and are just making a die now to preform it. Looking good! It’s all in the pre-form.

I ran a few thru my 6gt die some annealed some right out of the ammo box (old r&p brass) it folded every one. Too much unsupported case would be my bet I also ran some creedmoor thru as well it was better but pinched the shoulder see pics however you can fire form 22-250 into 6 creed near perfectly I would pay close attention to the web and shoulder area for signs of failure

22/250 was used to make 6xc, some guys even fireformed it to make 22 creed. XC case dimension are quite different than the gt. It'd be a lot of work! So much that I'd rather just go buy alpha gt brass.

Dang. What a pain in the ass.

As someone who's shot a shitload of 6CM with cases made from Lapua 22-250 brass, as well as a bunch of 6GT... I'd just stick with 6CM.

6CM at ~2900fps with ~39gn of H4350 or 41gn of Sta-Ball 6.5 felt the same recoil-wise, and did/does the same things downrange as my 6GT running ~2800-2850ish with ~32gn of Varget and/or SWPR.

Being able to use a fast powder like Varget/SWPR makes getting low SDs easier IMO (talking typically a ~5-6SD with the 6GT vs maybe a ~7-9SD with the 6CM), but otherwise, they perform the same IMO. IME at those speeds, same barrel life with both too (~2000-2500rds).

Hey guys,
I'm getting a pre-form die to convert 22-250 and 308 brass into 6GT, if it works I'll get them made for dashers etc as well.
Since there's so many plentiful brass options I figure it would be handy to have. I'll get back to you all when the dies arrive. Yes they will be LRP but hey in this day and age, options are options. The 22-250 shouldn't need any neck turning but the 243/308 probably will and possibly some reaming too.

You might have better luck starting with a 308 or 260 Rem die to push the shoulders back, the more shallow angle makes that easier. Then follow up with your 6 GT or Dasher die. And annealing to start and probably in between, likely followed by neck turning is what I'd try if you really have to form these.

Agreed. ADI 308 brass is very good too.

The die is on order and will be ready around the 4th of July. Basically it maintains a 20 degree angle up to the wall/neck junction of the GT/dasher etc then you can trim and finish in the FL die. Then turn etc. I’ll use a Forster lathe for all that.

No where near as easy as just fireforming an XC by the look of it but I do like the far less powder for a bit of work. I figure once I’ve done 200 cases I can do a decent side by side over a garmin and silver mountain at 600 meters and see how they go.

I will do a full cost comparison this week as it may just cheaper to buy 400 rounds of Alpha brass…
