Range Report 6mm. Rem. & Variants Question

To what degree are the 6XC and 6BR ..etc...
Superior to the Original 6mm. cartridge ??
I have a 6mm rifle in a Custom build that was my Dad's that he only used for deer hunting ..
Can the original cartridge run out to say 1000yds accurately? what projectile ? any load data out there you guys may used before ?
Reason I ask this is I see alot of guys running the 243's out to 1000yds here on the forums
isn't this basicly the same as the .244/6mm ??

Re: 6mm. Rem. & Variants Question

I believe he 6mm Rem will give you a bit more pop due to the slightly larger case capacity and IIRC, I believe factory 6mm Rems came with a 1:9 twist (an improvement over the 1:10 in the .243 Win), that should handle the heavier bullets a bit better once you get "way out der" (not that factory twist is at all important if you want to build)

Check out these links at 6mm BR's site for more info about the two in question, as I don't have any first hand experience with them.

Ballistically speaking, the 6mm Rem can run to 1000 NO PROBLEM, yet since it's not my rifle, I've never done it.
I've gotten better than fair accuracy working up a load for my fathers 42 year old factory 6mm 788 Rem with 105 Amax and Varget propped up on a bipod with a couple 2x4's at the back.

That kind of accuracy, that kind of bullet, the proper twist and the velocity to get there should all be apparent just by looking at the cartridge.

Re: 6mm. Rem. & Variants Question

The 6mm Rem is a very impressive round but it depends on what twist barrel in on it. I had one with a 1-12 twist. It shot the 70gr Ballistic tips amazing to 600 if the wind was light.

If you have a 1-8 twist and can run the 105-115 range bullet it will make it way past 1000.

With that said...They burn barrels fast. Mine shoot well to about 1500 rounds. Then it was TOAST! 3 shoots and it took 3 days to clean the copper out. Bore scoped it and it was fire cracked the lenght of the barrel! AMAZING!

Most 6 BR or 243 set up for a 1000 have fast twist barrels. You really do not need the case capcity of the 6mm to reach 1000.

Re: 6mm. Rem. & Variants Question

I have a 1970's 40x in 6mm 27 3/4 inch SS barrel. Hammered 87 v-max but couldn't shoot 105 A-max better than 1 MOA. I ended up twisting the barrel off and put a 1-8 Krieger on. she hums 105's and 108 Bergers now.

Re: 6mm. Rem. & Variants Question

That's good news to hear !
I know it will take deer waayyy out there as you guys stated ,& my Dad made some very long hits with it probably in the 7-800yardish range on jackrabbits just screwing around..
The times I shot it it was quite accurate , I'll think I will leave the .308 at home .. bust it out of the safe , blow the cobwebs off it and see what i can get her to group at the range next time I go

btw..it is a 1/9 twist ...what weight projectile should I try first..all I have are a few old boxes of Rem.100gr. Lead nose ??
