I have been considering stepping up a 223 build and making it a 6x45. Anybody have any experience with this round in a bolt gun? With aics mags. And a 2.55" capacity, i should be able to shoot 100 class bullets at 2500 fps.

I have been considering one for sometime. Keep talking myself out of it. Since you have brought it up again, I am going to take another look at the ballistics. Have to admit I am not much of a .223 bolt gun guy.

I have two: 20" and 24". Shoot 105's @ 2600fps, the long barrel about 50fps more. Matches my .308Win trajectory almost exactly with nil recoil. Single pass caseforming, zero brass prep, fire and forget. AICS mags will reliably feed to 2.530" COAL. Much longer and the tips might catch on the way up the mag.

BB. your results are encouraging. Quick question about reloading for it. For case forming, could you resize fired 223 brass in a 223 die, w/o a bushing, thereby leaving an oversized 223 casemouth, seat a 6mm and go? Also, if I used a 223 die with a 6mm bushing, would I obviate the need for a 6x45 sizing die?

I built one, and achieved the velocity that I wanted (2880-2900) with 95 smk's via 8208 xbr. Cool little round, but my 223 with pointed 82 bergers, or 80.5 fullbores offered better performance and increased accuracy. The advantage to the 6x45 is heavier bullets, forming cases is a breeze, and it's a good work around for states that require a 6mm floor for hunting. I opted to sell mine and re-build my 223 into a 223ai.

Good luck and keep us posted.

6x45 is a neat little case, had two uppers chambered in it. Easy to load for accurately, and very efficient use of barrel length. Found the available case capacity best suited to light/mid weight bullets when mag constrained in an AR. IIRC, I shot 70 Blitzkings @ 2950 from a 20" bbl, made for a sweet little p-dog rig that could be shot all dang day long. Loaded 60gr Sierra HPs and 55gr B-tips for coyotes and they worked real well. Heaviest bullets I tried was 85grainers, but I preferred the mid weight bullet/velocity compromise preferable for hunting rig duty...

I bet the 6x45 would make a real fun little shooter in a bolt gun. 1:9"tw, lobbing heavies from a 24" tube should allow a bazillion rds. of barrel life. Kept my dies and a bunch of brass, in case the same itch to build a bolt gun arises. Necking up .223 brass with a 6mm/223 Redding FL die w/carbide expander button is a snap...

Good luck & have fun with your project!

I run a fired .223/5.56 brass into a 6x45mm (6mm-223) FL die and out pops a 6x45mm case. Whether you could use a .223Rem bushing die with the appropriate bushing depends on whether neck part of the die will allow it.

I don't do any special case prep on 6x45mm since it's Fire & Forget for me. They still shoot to half MOA.

If you're building a 6x45mm to run in an AR, then you need to shoot the lighter bullets, otherwise you loose a lot of case capacity from deep seating the bullets.

Buffy, any chance you know your chamber specs? How much freebore for the 100 class?

I lucked out. My gun plumber had a 6x45mm reamer for a Thomson Center Contender (single shot pistol) which had the perfect freebore to load 100gr bullets to 2.500".

I kind of fell into the 6x45mm. I had a new Brux .243Win barrel with a bad chamber. I also wanted to shoot matches (6mm minimum). I also have buckets of 5.56 brass. I looked hard at the 6TCU, but fireforming and my smith already having a 6x45mm reamer sealed the deal.

About 25grs of powder topped off with a 107/105gr gives me 2600fps. The 95gr is probably a better fit and could give me another 100-150fps.

Other guys are shooting a .223 with 77gr/80gr at 2800fps. The impact signature on steel is decisively stronger with the 6x45mm and 105's.

I have a .17 Remington 700 V that is begging for a 6x45 barrel - anyone know if there is a RemAge in 6x45 available anywhere?

Want to shoot in a local match that requires bolt/6MM min. but only shoots to 550. Sounds perfect for that, and I'm kinda done with the .17 Remington for varmints.

Jim @ Apache Gun Works could spin you up one...

I keep considering one in a bolt. I have 2 ARs in said chambering in the safe, love em dearly. They both digest 70 gr Speer TNTs quite well...good coyote bullet, IME. I think a compact action in 6x45 running a good 80-85 gr class bullet would be nice deer medicine. It is interesting hearing the folks using the longer match bullets in such a small case...good info to hear and digest for future endeavors.

Hey BB, what twist are your barrels?

Sounds like a fun project, 87vmax would be good coyote medicine.

Never tried the VMax, as they were too long to feed in my AR, but the 87gr BTHP's served me well in my 24" 9 twist 6x45. Pushing them right up around 2900fps with 8208XBR spelled bad days for many coyotes and anchored them with authoritah. That same load served me pretty well out to 775(ish) in my first ever tactical match as well, but it got weak on the steel and was hard to make calls on. 70gr Speer TNT's were absolutely nasty, but the wind handed them their asses on longer shots.

I really do need one in a bolt gun with an 8 twist tube, just because.
