6x45?????

Been thinking on building my 223 into a 223 AI with a noodle barrel and a 1-7 or 1-8 twist for heavies to play out near 1000 yards and still be a walking rifle in a wood stocked ADL......but looking through the Sierra Reloading book I found the 6x45....talking about slightly better performance than the 223 with equal weight bullets. I know equal weight bullets the 223 will have higher BC than the 243 but I am leaning towards a pre-plan......if I ever have someone want to go deer hunting then I have a 243 cal rifle that is built and I know the loads for. 90% of our deer hunting is under 100 yards, I bow hunt so it is no big deal to find deer here within range. Thing is that Sierra does not go over 90gr bullets in the 6x45....those 90gr will run at 2700 fps with a shit pot of bench type powders....no mention of the normal 223 powders like Varget.

My question is this.....the 6x45 with a 1-8 twist should be able to push a 107gr SMK to 600-700-800???? I know people run the 300 Whisper out to 600 yards for paper but even using the google search for the Hide I get diddley for results.

The 223 AI would be a paper/steel and Cougar round and the 6x45 would be those plus deer......opinions!!!!!!

I did a 6x45 AR and loved it. Use 80 gr Barnes TTSX bullets and you can take deer to 300 yards with ease (assuming good shot placement. No fireforming, just size in 6x45 dies and you are GTG. BTW...Super bbl life too!

i just finished a 6tcu (6mm/223ackley) on a remington short action for a truck gun. wanted something with more horsepower than the heavy 223 bullets. used a pacnor super 1-10 barrel and finished at 24". chronoed 55's at alomost 3700, 70's at 3300, 80's at 3200. i have not shot any 100's yet but i think you would see approximately 2700 with the 107's. first group forming brass was .242. shoots a WIDE variety of powders. seems like a no brainer to me if you have a small bolt face short action and want a little more than the 223 can deliver. brass is everywhere and still somewhat affordable. bullet selection is large and largely AVAILABLE. go for it. i think you will like it.

I thought about the 6x45 and went as far as ordering dies and a barrel



But really a fast twist .223 ackley will do the same job or better. The 6mm might start out a bit faster with the same weight but the .224" is going to catch up PDQ and there are several honest big game bullets available for .224" now... 75gr Scirocco and 70gr TSX spring to mind

WA requires 243 or larger for deer...cougar can go 223 CF......any one have any load data for the common 223 powders....like Varget? Possibly some info on the 100gr?

Or is the 6mmTCU all that and a bag of Fish and Chips? Seems like an improved improvement might be the shit too.....

I have a 12fv that will need a new barrel soon and I have been considering a 6x45 or 6x45 AI to extend barrel life. It's currently a 204 Ruger. I'm interested to see where you go with this build.

I think 4895 would be 'the shit' in the 6x45 from the load data I've seen

H322 has made the best velocity and accuracy for me. H4895, VV135, H335, and BLC-2 have all been tried with good results but 322 is tops in my rifle.

FWIW I completed the rebarrel a few weeks ago, did some load development and am very pleased with my bolt gun in this caliber.

I also rethroated it for 105 Amax bullets and the 95 Vmax should shoot fine in it as well.

I have shot 100y groups with it so far, and the 100 BTSP Hornady's are running about 3/4", the 75 Vmax print at 3/8" for 5 shots. Loaded with BLC-2 and WC844, it fills up the case pretty well, and the 75 Vmax gets 2900 from my 27.5" 1:8 twist shilen.

I was real close to chambering a rifle in a 6x45, but in the end I ended up going with 6x47 so I didn't get my .223 brass mixed up. The 6x47 uses .222 rem mag instead of .223. It is wicked accurate and a phenomenal coyote round. I know it'll knock a pig and deers dick in the dirt quick too. I've found that 27g of H322 works great with the 65g v-max.

I have thought about building one of those. The late Bob Milek loved that round. Accuracy was great and barrel life bordered on eternal.

More recent update on the 6x45? </div></div>

100 BTSP over BLC-2 ran about 2650 but for the life of me I can't remember the load. I think it was around 24.5gr but I don't remember. I haven't done anything with it for a while now, the rifle has been wearing a 223 barrel for the past 6 months and I had been shooting all 75 Vmax in the 6x45 prior to that.

So you have an extra 6x45 M700 barrel sitting there? LMK if you want to sell it.

I have been toying back and forth between AR and bolt....but the bolt option seems like a soft Froot of the Loom boxer brief...and the AR is trying to be Whitey Tighties....more I try them (without buying or building) the more I think I won't like them....and for the cost. The bolt rifle can be done much cheaper, and more accurate for the money involved.

Main reason for thinking with the 6x45 is the availability of quality cheap brass...by the thousands!!!! Wouldn't even look back if I couldn't find a piece of brass.

I have been running a 6X45 AR for years now,very accurate.Have shot 5/8 groups with 65gr vmax and Varget with an ACOG NSN but not enough velocity even with a compressed load.My Coyote loads are 27.5 H335 in cooler weather,I back off to 27gr in hot summer weather.For W.WA Blacktails,a 100gr HDY RN over BLC2 packs a petty good punch for a little cart.I'm running a 16" bbl w/ a 1:10 twist.

Same as a 5.56mm or 223,mine feeds fine even with 100gr RN which I loaded just to see if they would work.BTW,they work great.

Joe, I'd go ahead if you want to use that cheap brass. Not sure what you have, but I had better luck using commerical brass vs. Mil surp as better capacity, and other benefits.

The 6TCU is not bad, but to me not worth the hassle and would no doubt recommend a 6x45 for anyone. Performance almost same.

Definitely twist it for what you want to shoot, it will need a tad more turning due to less MV than say larger rounds.

My 6TCU did well up to 85s w/12 twist but I'd do quicker if doing again.

I have a Douglas barrel in 6x45 that is going on an AR build here in the (hopefully) not too distant future. The Les Baer 6x45 ammo is loaded by Black Hills so it should be plenty accurate.

hitman, with like-weighted bullets this round runs a little bit faster (not much, maybe 50 fps) as a 223. I can't give you 20" data from my rifle since the barrel is 27+

Hodgdon's website lists data on a 24" barrel. Compare the 223 data they list (24") against the common speeds from a 20" (almost the same) and you'll get a decent idea of how you'll fare with a 20" 6x45

The heavy bullets are going to be a problem to compare, but a 90 VLD from a 223 should be comparable to a 105 VLD from the 6x45
