Re: Loads for 7 Rem Mag
You guys are beyond me with the match/target loads on any 7mm.I have owned and loaded(for hunting)7x57,7-08,.280 remand the much maligned 7mm rem mag.the latter being my favorite due to its ability to breath fire and remain fairly accurate. The last one I worked with was a Remington "costume shop" African Plains Rifle.I wont bore you to sleep with the GREAT number of powders and bullets that(no other way to say it)sucked. After a lot of testing, with an ohler 43,the dropem in their tracks load was federal brass,a 160 accubond,74 grains of magnum all sparked by a fed. 215 match primer. Before you draw and quarter me for groose overload, the brass and the numbers on the strain guage were(barely)in the green. set at .020 off the lands and concintricity runout at no more than.002,this load through the 26"barrel clocked just under 3200 fps and put 3 shots under a 1/2 ".As you well know most 7mm mag data is weak due to the cartridges tendenses for wild preasure swings and I admitt it can and often is a bitch to get right, but sighted 2" high at 150 yds. you better not hold outside the "sweet spot" out to 400.and thats about as far as I can "consistantly" make good hits from a improvised field postion. Oh and by the way;it did terrible nasty things when it arrived. This rifle was somewhat of an annomaley in that it took more propellant than most others I had worked with, that said,if you work with most magnums and use caution they can be some real heart breakers( for the game anyway)
