Gunsmithing 700P extractor issue

I have a slightly older Rem 700P that only extracts real brass. I bought a few snap caps for practice (A-Zoom alum red ones), most of the time they don't come out all the way. About 9 of 10 times, the snap cap falls back on the magazine instead of being ejected out of the port. I bought a new extracter and installed it last night. Now it really throws real brass out, but still is if-y with snap caps. It is better, about 1 of 7, but still drops most on the magazine.

I guess I could have worse problems... Like it being if-y with real brass... But I also don't want it to turn into a problem later with real rounds. Anyone have another idea of what this could be? Oh, my buddies 5r cycles the same snap caps just fine.

My rifle is mostly a stock 700P with the only upgrade being an HS Precision bottom metal. I will probably be changing out the stock and metal soonish.

Thanks.

Re: 700P extractor issue

Put a mic on the rim of the snap cap and see if it's smaller than your brass. Could be thicker as well. Sounds like you have a snap cap problem not a gun problem.

Re: 700P extractor issue

I am fairly certain it is not the snap caps, my friends 700 5R cycles them just fine. I also used his bolt in my rifle and it cycles snap caps with his bolt in my rifle.

+1
Sounds more like an ejector issue than an extractor issue.

Try using your bolt in friends rifle and see if snap-caps eject.

If they still malfunction from his rifle, swap the ejector & spring assembly from friends bolt onto your bolt, then try your bolt in both rifles. Let us know what happens.

Re: 700P extractor issue

I ran across a similar problem. On this particular rifle it wasn't the extractor. A small burr had formed on the edge of the ejector hole. I have no idea what could have caused it. I pulled the ejector and spring reamed the hole with an appropriate sized drill bit and the problem was solved.

If you don't have a problem with either loaded or empty brass, you might try different dummy rounds if it bothers you that much.

Re: 700P extractor issue

Thanks, I'll check out the ejector.

It is not that I am worried about it ejecting snap caps that much. Just worried that down the road, if I don't do anything, it might start dropping spent brass as well.
