I am looking for input on the velocities than you are or have achieved with 162 Amax, 175 Sierra or 180 Berger bullets. Please let me know bbl length and podwder used if you recall.

Thanks

Re: 7MM Rem Mag Velocities ?

I've been reloading for the 7mm rem. mag for a very long time and have found some loads that perform excellent and deliver extreme velocity as well.
Win brass
CCI large rifle mag primer
Nosler 120 grain balistic tip BT
73 grains RL22
3587 fps +/- 10 fps
.002 of lands

Win brass
CCI LRMP
Speer 130 grain PSPBT
71 grains RL22
3455 fps +/- 10 fps
.002 off lands

This one is probably one of the finest big game loads I've ever developed and not for the faint at heart, more imporatntly, not shooting a strong action.
Win brass
CCI LRMP
175 grain core lock or a grand slam
72.5 grains RL22
3380 fps
.002 off lands

The above loads have been used by me for a very long time and ina strong action. I don't recomend anyone just loading these cold. In other words work these up from listed data of the same powder and bullet description in half grain increments. I'm not showing any signs of dangerous pressures with these loads though my primers are pretty flat and some cratering is present. I only neck my brass which I find helps with tollorance issues. My action has been faced, lapped and my barrel as well. Pillar bedding is an absolute or at least some custom bedding should be done if shooting for consistent perfprmce as I've been achieving. I've never punched a primer or had any fracturing problems with brass. Accuracy is superior with all the above loads to the extent at 200 yds. I can achieve 1 hole 5 shot groups. seating depth, turned brass, and scaled powder charges are the primary reason in my opinion for this superior performance. Expect some noticable high recoil if your not using mercury tubes or some other high quality system to reduce

Re: 7MM Rem Mag Velocities ?

162gr amax moly
nosler brass
cci 250
74.5gr H1000 (very hot) and not all that acurate
got me to 3025fps outa a weatherby 24 inch

acurate load is as above with
72.5gr H1000

That load about scares me to think about. I don't use nearly that much RL22 with any bullet and never imagined getting that sort of velocity from a 175 in a Rem Mag.

Re: 7MM Rem Mag Velocities ?

I know shooters who use 284's, 7mm Saum & WSM and they hit over 3000 with eases using 175 Sierras or 180 Bergers. I was hoping that someone was getting at least 3100-3150 with the 7 RM or I might as well go with one of the other calibers.

may I ask why you need to achieve those velocities ?

any living critter don't care about 100 more fps and if the accuracy node ain't there, then why ?

man with a 168 VLD, at 3040 fps, I am only 18 MOA at 1000 yds. not to mention out of a factory tube

Re: 7MM Rem Mag Velocities ?

You could go with a .284 and RE17 for 2900fps+, or a straight .280 for 3000fps. But I think you will find the best accuracy with the 180VLD's between 2880-2980fps in almost any chambering.

That is, unless you are looking to keep the 180VLD supersonic beyond 1875 yards and getting two barrels finished and chambered to last the season. Unless it's going to be an ELR rifle there's no reason to go with a short magnum and incur the extra problems of brass sorting and neck thickness issues.

What exactly do you consider a strong action?

180gr VLD with 67gr RL22 will get you there (3040 fps out of my 26").
