A friend of mine jumped in early on the 1761 for a NRL 22 rifle on the "promise" 10 round mags would be very quickly introduced to the market....
For a NRL 22 rifle the lack of 10 round mags is a show stopper, as is lack of after market chassis.
The other things thats not amazing about my friends 1761 is it has a very tight chamber and makes feeding a bit difficult. He's tried a variety of different ammo brands and types and so far everything has had very "tight" feeding.
He's enquired with a Anschutz in Germany and USA about the exceptional tight chamber but been told it's normal.
I've shot the rifle a few times and can't say I've been moved to buy one.
A fortner action in a AT-X chassis on the other hand, that I can get excited about.
Completely unrelated, Germany has been promising us the 10rd mags for the 1761 for 2ish years. MDT has some stuff coming for the 1761. When you say tight feeding, can you elaborate? He wouldn’t have spoken to me and gotten the answer that it was normal. He can certainly email me if he needs to and I’ll get the issue sorted. [email protected]
My post was answering the above guy about why you don't see the 1761 in matches (at least NRL/PRS type events).
I don't live in the US, so all my friends correspondence has been through Anschutz in Germany, he ended up havign an issue with his trigger which they got sorted out for him, but much of there other responses has been less helpful than it could be.
It's good to hear some aftermarket support is coming for the 1761 but really need those 10 round magazines to come through.
I'd never really considered Anscutz as an option for NRL 22, I was all keen to get a Vudoo/RimX when I upgrade my Tikka but stumbling upon this thread it's nice to see there are some good Anschutz options out there.
Both of my 1761's like Lapua Center-X and RWS Rifle Target shooting .3"-ish at 50yds. The only issues that I have had are the five round magazine limitation and the occasional stovepipe. Being Lefthanded (and personally not liking the Savage line) I had very few options when I started shooting .22LR bolt guns. The Annie's spoiled me for accuracy, but I wish that I had gone Vudoo sooner. I just picked up a LH Tikka T1x and it appears to be very accurate (sub-.3" @ 50y).
Yes. It’s still coming. AI wanted a little longer to iron out the prototype. Should have it for testing next week and have some more details ironed out in the next week.
I saw that prototype in the wild a couple weeks ago at a 22PRS match...it made me inquire about what I was looking at. I'm a Rim-X shooter and know nothing about Anschutz but it made me kinda want one. Sorry I didn't get any photos.

Since ANA posted a pic of the 1727F in the AT-X AICS prototype, I will add some details.
As far as how does the Fortner shoot, I would say it holds up the reputation of Anschutz target rifles. In the fall of 2020 (height of the Rona Pandemic) ANA sent us a 1727F in a wood CISM stock for evaluation on suitability for a chassis. The 1727F has an 18" barrel that tapers from .990" at the receiver to .830" at the muzzle and weighs approximately 3.1 lbs. It's a fairly light barrel for competition shooting but with careful support it does shoot very well. In general, I have found the very short barreled rimfires sensitive to support and prone to vertical dispersion when not carefully controlled. One of the test barreled actions is my personal Model 54.18 MSR. The MSR has a 22" barrel of approximately .900" taper. I have done a fair amount of testing with the MSR and I shot several rimfire matches with the barreled action fitted in a modified Anschutz Super Match stock for Olympic style positional shooting. The combination of the MSR and Super Match stock is highly accurate. Below are some groups from both the 1727F and the MSR.
1727F in the CISM stock. This is not a great stock for PRS/NRL shooting. It's too sensitive to support.
1727 Barreled action. This is a very stiff action with the best trigger ever devised.
The target below is the MSR in the Super Match stock at 104 yards. The middle bull is a zero check group. I like testing one shot per bull to get exact measurements on each individual shot. I don't expect anyone to turn up at match with rifle and ammo that will out shoot this one. Anschutz does know a thing or two about accurate rimfires.
This is the 54.18 MSR in the positional stock that shot the above target.
These groups were shot at 104 yards with the 1727F and the CISM stock.
- The left group is with the bipod vertical and a rear support bag.
- The middle group is with the bipod at 45 degrees. Tighter center, but still vertical.
- Right group is with the gun fully supported on a Game Changer bag pinching the front of the stock into the bag. I'll take that all day long!
The pair of targets below are my 104 yard zero check a few hours before the Quantico Shooting Club PRS match a couple of weeks ago.
This is the 1727F in the AT-X chassis shot kneeling from a Shemdium Game Changer bag from about the height of the low step on a PRS barricade. I'm very happy with the zero and the groups. Not many guns are going to beat that.
A 10-shot test group at 104 yards with the 1727F and the AT-X chassis. There was some wind blowing while firing this group, but it is still sub MOA.
1727F in the AT-X chassis at 200 yards. Again with some wind to contend with.
1727F at 325 yards. A decent pair of 10 shot groups with significant wind to contend with. These are still sub MOA groups!
This ammo by the way is over 25 years old. I'm burning up old lots of ammo from my Conventional Smallbore days.
Here's a pic of the 1727F in the AT-X chassis with a TB suppressor attached. The 24 inch barrel that will come on guns next year will look very much like this.
We are shipping the chassis to ANA next week for evaluation and feedback. It is very close to being released for production which will follow any comments and feedback from ANA.

Yes, I confirmed w GSR today, the test bed stock that was posted up here is indeed on the way and will be able to fit the Fortner and the 5418. (Same bolt/trigger pattern). Still, lots of technical issues for them to complete and it is still going to be a bit of a wait. But Dam….talk about a category killer..

Yes. The inlet will fit both actions. Oddly, the 1727F has a front recoil lug while both the 54.18 and 1727F have a center lug slot. We designed the AT-X chassis to use the center lug and gave the front lug slot a lot of clearance to eleminate any contact between the lug and the chassis.@Scott Seigmund, can you confirm that this chassis will be compatible with match 54 and Fortner actions that have the Tikka style (not sure what to call it) of recoil lug?

After a year and a half, there aren't really any issues left to resolve. We want ANA's feedback, but I don't anticipate any significant issues.
The price of the Anschutz barreled action includes the 54.30 trigger which has no equal as far as I am concerned. Vudoo and Rim-X buids easily go over $5K.
Barreled actions AND the AT-X chassis will be available from Anschutz of North America.
Thanks for the great info. You mentioned that the 1727F and maybe due to the short barrel is prone to issues when shooting off a bipod or pressure on the stock, does that also occur on the AT-X with the 1727F or do you think it was mainly the way the 1727F and its interaction with the stock?
The vertical sensitivity is due to the light wood CISM stock. In the AT-X chassis with weights to perfectly balance the gun it shot really well.
Keep in mind that 18" barrel is NOT what will be supplied in the AT-X chassis. The 1727F for the chassis will have a 24" barrel with a threaded muzzle. The 18" barreled action is what we had available for R&D and it worked out well for that activity. I have shot short barreled Vudoo's and Bergara's that will string vertical as well. I think the good shooters are figuring out that short barrels are not the way to win.
The CISM configuration is designed primarily for offhand shooting.

Damn this is almost exactly what I'd want from a NRL/PRS 22, 24" threaded barrel is definitely the way to go IMO.
Sadly (for me) I imagine these wont be for sale outside of the US.
Those 325yard groups are fantastic.
We will have something up on the Anschutz North America website as it gets closer to being released
Is the profile and twist set for the 24" barrel? Were any twists other than 16 looked at? Thanks
There won’t be a different twist other than the 16”. That’s not to say we don’t see the trend and performance of some of the faster twists, but there are roughly 450 54.18s sitting in our shop right now so if there is a change it won’t be sudden
On the chassis or rifles? The rifles are here and we are doing some testing with the chassis just to cover the bases prior to production from AI

I would enjoy your Vudoo and when these come to market make your decision. I would be foolish to speculate a rough time frame
I'm in Aus but have worked with US based dealers/exporters and importers to bring in a Cooper, 2 Vudoos & a Rim X. It takes time and costs $$$ so all depends on how keen you are to get one!
I know export isn't impossible, just on same instances (such as AI North America) there are restrictions on export due to distributor network/licensing agreements.
I'm in New Zealand where Vudoos are very expensive so haven't yet jumped on board.
I always thought an Fortner action would be great for NRL, this particular configuration with a heavy, threaded 24"barrel is exactly what I would want in a NRL rifle, and the AT-X chassis is just icing on the cake.
If initial reviews on this rifle are positive I'll be jumping through hoops of fire to try get one.
Started testing it at ANA Thursday afternoon. It’s a winner with the 54.18. The target is 10 shot groups with 13 different lots out of the 25.9” barrel.
