I shot in a tactical .22LR rifle match at the Catawba Valley Rifle & Pistol Club in NC on Saturday. It humbles you to shoot a .22 out to 210 yards and to have a 10 year old shoot your pants off. Moral to the story? Practice more, have better ammo, and a much bigger scope so you can see that far. I want to thank these folks. Its a great match with very nice people. Next shoot is 12/13. It was well worth the 6 hour drive. Bring a sandwhich and drinks though.

Re: All the infoShooting Steel at Catawba in NC

We were mighty glad you came all the way from Northern VA to shoot with us Chris! I have been working on getting a grill for the range but honestly I don't know when I would cook due to calling the line and setting targets. It is hoped that we will be holding this match March or April - December of 2011. Thanks for posting here and spreading the word about this match. The next shoot is actually on December 11th. Hope to see you there.

Woops, didn't read my own post. See you in December. Dragging the Drinkwater man with me to help with the driving.

Its not as easy as it looks guys. "Come on down" as they say and give it try.

Re: All the infoShooting Steel at Catawba in NC

Yes it is open to anyone. We are rapidly approaching the max number of people we can run through the line in a day so please pre register and if you can't make the trip don't forget to cancel with Steve(Apache308) or myself in a timely manner so an alternate can fill the vacancy. The range is 375 miles from Murfreesboro TN..about the same distance Chris had to drive. Practice up before you come over as we only shoot the match on match day. Look at the pics of our range layout and if there is any way to simulate those angles in your area I would do so. The match fee is incredibly cheap for the amount of fun and prize potential. Bring your A game cause Chris ain't lyin, there are some children that grown men do well to fear on the line at CVRPC

Chris - Thanks for coming down and shooting with us and taking on the CVRPC .22 Tactical Steel Challenge. It's a tough game for sure and demands good equipment and being able to "play the game" as you go. Most of the shooters who were there in October were much better prepared this month and I'm sure it will be the same in December. Bring the 504 and a friend back down on the 11th.

On a side note, as armorpl8 noted, we will be able to get approx 28 or so shooters through the course so if anyone is interested in shooting next month let me know. Thanks, SR.

J_Roger,

This is a fun match and WORTH the drive. I'm bringing a friend to help with the driving.

Joe, let the kids provide the food. You're way-y-y too busy running this thing. For anyone thinking about doing this let me tell you, it's a challenge. The "Bonus" targets at 63 yds are about the size of a small plume, behind the hostage. Oh, and let me tell you, the ladies of Catawba are a force to be reckoned with. They grow great shots down there.

One more thought, what about a match in Jan. or Feb,? The cold should play havoc with the ammo, coats and gloves add to it, it would be fun. How much snow do you get?

Chris

Steve and I are both plenty busy on match day and we are working on upkeep and expansion plenty on days when there is no match. There is plenty of eating joints close to the range and I appologize for not making that clear. I will do better in the future.THere is a Burger King, Jack in the box, Subway, Zaxby's, and a few others all within 5 minutes of the range I promise to give detailed directions before next match day.
Having a match in January and February would simply be pushing our luck with the weather as well as some other matches that take place at the club in those months. Last February I stood in 6 inches of snow to shoot a full round of skeet in our All-Around match and it was very unpleasant. There should be plenty of challenging weather in March and April. We also need some time to obtain materials and adapt our stands to be more conducive to running 2 banks of targets simultaneous and also posibly add a fifth stage. We are working on that continually but we also shoot pistol metallic silhouette from the same line and need to have everything ready for that in March as well. We are encouraged by the enthusiasm about the match and look forward to adding a second bank and hosting up to 60 shooters.
