Any Jeep Wrangler owners here?

08 Wrangler Sahara
I like it, they're fun.
I drive a lot. It's not a great daily driver due to mileage and maintenance for me. I generally drive another vehicle for my work.

I have a 17 Recon Rubicon. I should have bought one sooner. Does everything I need it to and then some. Broke its cherry on a 2 day shooting trip.

So all you current owners, are they reliable? or do they have major problems as the all wise internet says? I know my experience with them was bad, but i give my TJ a pass cause it was used and dealership was too stupid or lazy to fix it. I owned it for 6 moths and it spent 3 in the shop. I got to know the tow truck drivers pretty well. But it was the most fun I ever had in a vehicle.

*Didn't read all the responses so I'm sorry if I'm repeating info.

I've owned 2 Wranglers. Both built to rock crawl. One ending up w/ 37" tires and Currie custom 9" axles.

My advice based one your needs: Get the four door. The SWB really is shitty to drive. It's really the biggest drawback to drivability in a Jeep. Not sure if they still offer the two door LWB version or not. Get the Rubicon package. It's the shit unless you need to get into some gnarly rock crawling it will do great in just about every environment and I prefer the "glad to have it and not need it club" than the alternative. It will also have better resale value and interest by buyers.

Will my two cents to this thread. The Mrs bought a 2015 JK 2 door. T top for her Summer driving which she loves. Lots of accessories so she would be happy. All was well till about 33k miles. One of the heads was defective. That was replaced under warranty A week later the radiator split. That was not under warranty & cost a little over $700.00. Following week, yes the other head needed replacement. Under warranty. Still not done! Everything was fine for about a month & surprise, valve tappets needed replacement.
This Jeep has more open heart surgery than any cigarette smoker I know of.

It's called "engineered obsolescence". They're made to fail at a certain time/mileage, to drive the parts/maintenance side of the business (especially when most can't afford to dump the vehicle since they still probably owe on it).

Jeeps are bad, Audi's are waaayyyyy worse.

Been around Jeeps most of my life and I own 2 right now, a 95 YJ that will be built on tons and a 5.3 and an 08 Rubi I got last year with 62k miles on it and 35’s. Drive it to work 190 miles a day.

I like Toyotas too.

Supercharged, ARB air locker, Toytec Boss coilovers, Airbags, Warn M8000, Satoshi grill, aluminum skids,

Did all the mods and installs.

You?
Full width kit with a GM Dana 60 front, ported hydro assist steering, dual cases with 5:1 in the rear case, 5.13s in the axles with spools, four link on coils suspension in the rear and one ton brakes, all done by me. Of course, I've also built a few rock crawler chassis as well as an Ultra 4 racer that I was co dog on and several show trucks, one of which was in Four Wheeler magazine. I might know a bit about 4wds. Here is a few before the full width conversion.

Not a jeep, but fun none the less! 1991 D110 200TDI motor. Gets 28-30 mph. Too bad I just sold it and made a killing off it. 20160810_080904.jpg

Left hand drive was fun too, freaked people out at stop lights

We want pictures!

I won't pick it up until next weekend at best. It's at a dealer outside Boston where I bought my Ram 3500. Bought it by phone.. But good dealer, good salesman who I've dealt with for year.

This is the 'stock' picture:

I don't plan on doing any customizing... But I'll put 'real' tires on. Anyone want a good deal on a set of four barely-used factory suburban-side-street-ready Jeep tires?

Cheers, Sirhr

About 15 years ago I started a off road company. Rocky Mountain Off Road. A few years in another business I began started to really take off so I moved on. The plaque on top of the frame is 1st place for COHVCO show a few years earlier for the same Jeep but another iteration.

EVERY Jeep owner w/ a built rig said this when they bought theirs. :D

My wife had a 2012 JK. She loved it and thought she was badass driving it. We had a 3.5" lift in it with 35" tires. It then developed the "death wobble". Brought it to the a good 4 wheel place and cost about $3500 in work to figure out what caused it. Also the radiator shit the bed at that time, so another $1000 to get a good aftermarket. Three years and lots of fun but not worth the cash in my opinion. She now drive a 4Runner TRD Off road and not looking back.

I drive a '17 Rubicon as a DD, and a no frills 2013 sport(rollup windows) if I want a quieter ride.

My barn is full of mounted wheels, they go on with a lift for wheeling trips, usually off when I return. Sold the Anvil one, we usually have 5 on the property.

Death wobble is generally caused by not enough caster angle due to trying to keep the front driveshaft from too much angle/binding. It is worsened by a bad wheel balance. Adding an extra steering stabilizer is not a fix but a bandaid that will eventually reveal itself as the stabilizers wear out prematurely due to the wobble issue. $3500 seems excessive to find a death wobble problem as any good 4 wheel drive shop should fully understand, better than I, death wobble and what causes it and how to fix it. It's literally an alignment issue and since camber is fixed on a Wrangler, the only adjustment is toe and caster.

Can you get adjustable lower control arms to add camber? My Jeep is 3” on stock control arms. No death wobble, but it seems to dart around in the lane a lot. I had A professional alignment, and that helped a lot. But it still seems to dart.

Need offset balljoints for camber on an XJ like that, LCA won't change camber.

Darting around may mean your stabilizer is shot, or you got some loose tierod ends/ball joints, or you just expect too much from a rolling brick.

Lol, yeah. My first straight axle since my dads 78 blazer I drove in 96. It’s not bad really... just squirly

Well, it's not like ordering a set of seat covers... and some glass sliders to replace the plastic half-door window tops and getting a locking gun box and, well, just a small rifle rack and a couple of stickers, and a spare tire cover....

Oh goddamnit....

Cheers,

Sirhr

Yes, that's about the only way to adjust camber besides the special washer from the factory. That's not usually enough for a lift much more than 2". Darting sounds like it's not tracking well and adding camber should help.

They added the stabilizer, when that didn't fix it, they said well the tire have 35k on them could be an issue... And so on. My wife really liked driving around in a jeep so we kept trying. She doesn't bitch when I spend money on guns, so I couldn't not try to get it fixed. It just snowballed.
