I finally figured out how to cut a beautiful sharp burr free crown with a carbide incert tool today. I bought some .005 radius kennametal incerts for my km tool holder. Did some math and figured my speed and feed rates. Speed was 1800 and feed was .0022. Fast and slow. I've always used hss with good results but this carbide tool really put the shine and sharp to it. I do something very similar. Carbide is your friend.

Most of the time yes...however, I bought some tpmc-32nv in tin coated carbide to try replacing my AR Warner hss threading inserts and cannot get them to work at all, even tried threading at 460 rpm which gets scary on a manual. Yet when truing an action, a carbide internal insert leaves a impeccable finish.
