Anyone Shoot 6 Ackley?

Just looking to gather as much info as I can about different loads. My 6AI I've had for a while. It's on a long action built by Don Golembieski of Kodiak Precision in Mesa.

It's setup for varmints but I want to use it in practical LR competition. It's got a Badger LA M5 on it and an A3.

My questions are what are y'all using for:

- Bullet, powder, primer, OAL, velocities, etc.
- Barrel: Length, contour, twist
- Performance at 1k

I'm looking at running the 107gr. SMK's. They're available, easy to get and affordable. 115 DTAC's I know aren't that bad, but just looking at an alternative.

Any info is appreciated.

Thanks,

Rich

Re: Anyone Shoot 6 Ackley?

The current barrel is WAY to slow to spin 107's. I'm ordering a 1:8 from Bartlein with a #7 GAP Contour, 28".

Just want to see if I'm on the right page.

Re: Anyone Shoot 6 Ackley?

Its been a long long time since I ran a 6AI. I sold it years ago in fact. But using the Berger VLD, Shilen barrel I cant remember the exact charge but I know my best accuracy came with a full case of 4831 in the 29" tube.

Re: Anyone Shoot 6 Ackley?

I'm currently running a 6mm Ackley on a Phoenix Machine action with a 30" Rock 5R with a 1-7.5" twist, contour is med palma. This rifle is set up as a single shot so it's on a short action.
I am using the 107 SMK because the 115s just didn't do that great. In a formed case I'm using 50 gr of R22 for an verage velocity of 3386 and it will cut .3" groups at its 200 yd zero.

I haven't had a chance yet to go out any farther than 500 yd as the rifle was just finished up last fall and I've been working on loads both fire forming and formed with this being the most accurate.

Formed load is:
Win brass
215 primer
50 gr R22
107 Sierra Match King seated just touching the lands.

Avg vel. 3386
ES= 11

The reason for the 215 is a spread and accuracy issue more than anything else. I tried the 210M and a standard WLR but was getting spreads a little more than I wanted so I tried the 215 and got a spread of 11 fps and really tightened my groups up so that's where I stayed. There are absolutely no pressure issues with the mag primer. I am also using a magnum primer in my 22-250 Ackley over a pile of R22 for the same reason.

Jerry,

have you tried RL17 yet ?

Re: Anyone Shoot 6 Ackley?

I looked in my data book last night and the correct velocity is actually 3386 fps not 3186 as listed above going off of memory. Too many cartridges to keep up with I guess.

I've not tried R17 (yet) but I have tried various burn rates from H4350, R19, H4831, H1000 and R25 and nothing is as consistent and accurate as R22.

Re: Anyone Shoot 6 Ackley?

Thanks for the info on the 243 AI! I just got a pound of H100V I was going to try in it. That's about the velocity I'm getting from it now with 105 AMAXs. Too bad it's going to rain all weekend.

Re: Anyone Shoot 6 Ackley?

So...here's what I've gathered is the way to go:

- 1:8 twist, 24" barrel
- I'm going with a Bartlein and go back & forth on the taper. My first instinct is a #7 GAP Contour .920 at muzzle but am thinking of KISS and just going with a Remington Varmint contour.

What do y'all think?

Bullet-wise, I'll run either the 115gr. DTAC's or the 107 SMK's.

Re: Anyone Shoot 6 Ackley?

I'm actually going to run a #3 on the 6 AI build since it's going to be a lighter rifle for soy bean fields and walking around with it, so I'm sticking to a lighter contour.

I'm not totally convinced that for an accurate rifle that will hit minute of dead on whistle pigs that I need a 16lb rifle. In fact, I'd rather run a 24" barreled light contour for higher velocity and a flatter trajectory for less than perfect ranging.

Re: Anyone Shoot 6 Ackley?

From now on I'm getting Tubb contour Schneider barrels for my bolt guns,Except the 375CT of course. It's the perfect do all contour.IMO All the "top" barrel makers are neck n neck as far as putting out good barrels these days and you don't have to wait forever to get a Schneider.
