I also highly recommend reading the greatest book I ever read as a kid.... Northwest Passage by Kenneth Roberts.
Brilliantly researched historical fiction. Which means that he got the history dead nuts right. But put fictional characters in to tell the story. Arundel, Northwest Passage and Rabble in Arms are three of the best works of American Literature of the 20th century. All eminently readable.
I probably read Northwest Passage 10 times before I turned 12. Do you know how many hours I spent shooting at tossed pinecones with my Crossman (and later .22) trying to emulate the Rangers? And, yes, it paid off.
