AR accuracy??

Re: AR accuracy??

I'm a newb to the Ar-15 world and owned a Bushmaster 24 inch stainless varmint model. That would shoot right at or under 1 MOA at 100 yards all day long with federal 55 grain bulk ammo and a Nikon 3-9 Buckmaster scope. I still regret selling but had to cause the wife lost her job. She's back working and I shifted gears and am going with a DD carbine. You guys are scaring me with these accuracy claims. I'll be picking up my DD this weekend or the beginning of next week hopefully. I hope it shoots good.

Re: AR accuracy??

I think there is a huge difference between a "Stock" AR 10 and AR15 when it comes to accuracy. The AR15s tend to shoot tighter than there big brothers.

I am "NOT" talking varmint weight barrels or aftermarket barrels. I am talking a stock weight battle rifle barrel not something that is 24"long and weighs 12lbs.

My AR10 was a consistant 1.5" rifle to 1.75"s on average with match ammo. I put a free floated handguard on it and now its a consistant 1" to 1.25" gun.

I was shooting it a 400 and 600yds this weekend and had a couple of 3 shot groups at 400 that were 1.5 to 2"s an my 5 shot groups were in the 5" to 6" range at 600yds. I was doing load testing and it was dead ass calm with no wind at 6 am in the morning.

I have found with this rifle if I shoot several 5 shot groups I will average right around 1 MOA to 1.25 MOA for all 5 groups. I will have 4 out of the 5 shots in a MOA or just under with the 5th round in at around 1.25moa so thats pretty damn good for a stock weight battle rifle with no trigger job or anything else.

Re: AR accuracy??

I've seen a couple sub MOA all day AR's. One is my buddies DPMS LR308. It shot great with factory match ammo and even better with handloads. The second was a RRA PP with a 20" barrel, we only ran handloads through it. The rifle loved the 69's and 77's. It was a 1-8" twist.

Sub MOA gas guns are out there but they are fewer and farther between than bolt guns.

Re: AR accuracy??

Hi, Im new to posting, but have been reading for a few weeks. I am also new to shooting and have a Rock River AR15. I am waiting for my scope and rings to arrive and decided I would try open metal sites for the mean time to get used to the weapon. I have a few problems:
1 At 25 yards- I shot consistently within a 2 inch group (15 rounds), but always about 2 inches below my aimpont? why?

2 At 50 Yards I shot within about a 4 inch group (25 rounds), but always up and left by several inches from where I aimed? Why again?

I assume this will happen when the scope is mounted, being that the problem is probably my technique/skill. I would like to start correcting the problem.

Thanks for the help and sorry if I posted in the wrong section, but I didnt know where to post this.

Practice, practice, practice.

With the irons, sight picture is everything.

Remember your sight picture and try to hold for the SAME picture.

FOCUS ON THE FRONT SIGHT POST.

Take your nose and butt it up against the charging handle and keep it there.

DON'T lift your head after you break the shot to see where the shot went, have a spotter or use a shoot-n-c target. There's no reason for you to lift your head off that stock until the bolt locks to the rear...unless theres a hot chick walking by.

Re: AR accuracy??

If your irons are set for 100 yards then it will be crossing the line of sjght at 50 yards and shoot high. Shooting to the left could be because of a misallignment at 25 yards. The large groups could be shooter error of perhaps the ammo you are using like Wolf for instance or both. In any case practice and shoot decent ammo if you are not now doing so and your groups will improve.
