FWIW to this point they only make things in China that are made better in China. Certain textile and apparel mfg methods have settled in certain places:
Wovens are in India and Bangladesh, with a secondary hub in Central America
Bags and luggage are PI and Vietnam
Gloves are Vietnam and Sri Lanka
Über-technical welded and bonded garments are in China, and emerging in VN and Korea to avoid duties but they’re Chinese run.
...and so on and so forth...
If you want the best waterproof breathable state of the art jacket, you’re not stabbing yourself going commie. Only the commies can do that. They’re the ONLY ones who can meet the spec.
The US sucks at technical apparel, and nobody wants to invest $1BN in infrastructure to have the capability when you have to pay people min. $17 an hour and they still don’t show up half the time.
Consumers damn sure don’t want to pay the cost to offset it.
Show of hands: how many people would pay $1700 for an Arcteryx Alpha was made in the USA?
To your point, the Beyond Clothing custom jacket I bought that was hand made in Eugene, OR was a pile of trash and the owner of the company didn't care when I showed him. On the other hand Rab, Mountain-Equipment, and Arc fit correctly and are just right from the beginning. I'm not crazy about their politics but I've been shit on by the companies that claim to share my same values. In other words, buy the product, not the story.
