Join the contest SubscribeI need some help with details regarding the M144 Spotting scope.
I'm looking for pics of :
1) Scope, and markings (particularly anything to show differences with the B&L 15-45x60 "commercial" version)
2) Tripod and markings (or a recommeded "next best thing to the original" to help find a clone)
3) Accessories and markings - (did find a nice pic of the eyepiece cover here from red6actual here; since it is in an "ad" that might "go way" , it would be nice to have it moved here ...hint, hint )
Also, PDF of manuals:
1) TM 9-1240-411-12&P Operator's and Unit Maintenance Manual Including Repair Parts and Special Tools List Telescope, Straight: M144 - Nov. 1998
2) any others ?

The .308 feeds from the long action. The only thing to be done to the internal mag on the M24 is to shorten it. IIRC, from 38mm to 32mm. It is a Remington LA ADL mag box, with a screw to secure the mag to the action. The follower is milled.
The bottom metal is not the std Rem. Its either Dakota Arms, or Sunny Hills. It has been covered thoroughly in this thread.

When the mag box is shortened, does it keep the factory taper? or is it a straight cut? Thanks.
Anyone interested in a real #M24/EMA-ARD new out of packaging with instructions let me know.
M144 is just an off-the-shelf B&L Elite Armored 15X45X60mm spotter (62-1548P)
Tripod is Bushnell Shooters Stand (78-3011)
The M144 includes a Quick-Release Mount for attaching scope to tripod
A screw-on eye protection laser filter (LFU) made by Decilog, goes in front
An anti-reflection device (ARD) made by KillFlash, mounts onto the LFU, or directly to the scope
Light loss and image resolution are degraded >+15% using both filters
Last gov't purchase was for 4000 units @ $1,200/July 2002. They must be sitting in a warehouse untouched, because Army began issuing the Leupold M151 Enhanced Spotting Scope & Tripod to address the shortcomings of the M144 around the same period.
Let me make it clear for a few of you. Most of you know this. The Marine M40 is more based of a Winchester 70. The M24 is a long action 700. The SS 5R is a short action, but has the same barrel as the M24. It has also been said it would of been better for the M24 to be a short action.
I love this thread
The differences between bottom metals have been covered thoroughly. I have both a PST-024 and PST-011 stocks. I compared both prior to assembly. I though sharing the results might help some of you understand the differences between both.
- As it has been said multiple times, the PST-024 is THE only stock that will fit the larger bottom metals and M24 contour barrel without any modifications whatsoever.
- The PST-011, and all other HS long action stock, need mods to accept the larger BM and the M24 barrel contour.
- Some people might think a standard BDL bottom metal from a donor Rem 700 will fit a PST-024 since it is smaller. WRONG. It doesnt fit.
Kick Ass rifle I am trying to make up mind to do a M24 or a M40 Vietnam era rifle.
Yea I know just build both of them.
Anyone know of what month and year production started on the first M24s for the Army? In-service year is listed as 1988 but I wonder if it may actually be early 1989 instead? I've read a while back that many of the earliest rifles were in the Panama military arsenal before they were in US Army sniper's hands, reportadly and if true rightfully so pissed off the Army snipers! Prequal of Fast n'...well never-mind.
Operation Just Cause was officially Dec. 1989. I remember watching the news feed from it at my grandparents when I was eleven.
The first 100 M24s were delivered on 25 October 1988 and another 100 on December 20th. Remington was awarded the contract on 22 July 1987, test weapons were submitted on 13 October 1987 and first prototype for military trials on 28 October 1987.
I seriously doubt that Panama got these before our Snipers but I have no information either way.
For "GRINS"
I emailed one of the various Government Property purchasing companies online
and asked for a quote on the
M24 Day Optics Case NSN: 1005-01-260-2666
(and by "Case" I mean just the blow-molded plastic box with foam...NO scope, ARD, Irons sights, etc.)
The Good News: If I want one, I can buy one, with my credit card
The Bad News: Cost was $795/ea (if I bought a qty of 3)![]()
Thanks.Check on eBay once in a while. They sell for +-100-150$. Post an ad here. They are not that 'rare'.
Wasn't there someone selling those used plastic day optics cases on the Options and Accessories section here a few weeks ago? My ability to search the ads here is failing me but I thought they were asking $100 per case....I recall the seller even stated they could get more if the demand was there.
Yeah I remember that post. He had 3-4 for sale. People thought he was selling the rifle case for 100$
Here it is. 2 left (Nov 15th)

Thank you.
I'm pursuing this and trying to get some pics or NSN to verify.
...pair of socks and duct tape thats classic lol man i love it
If you can provide Remington with a legit serial number, and they will verify, the current price on the optics case with foam is $233.14, otherwise watch ebay as Eodsix advises, they have sold for 150+ over the past 2 years.
Found this picture of what appears to be the M24 Flash Hider actually being used.
I'm not sure what that piece, just forward of the bolt handle is?
REF: m24 sws - Taringa!

Interesting picture. Appears the soldier is wearing MarPat camo, USMC issue.
The flashider is mostly used with the AN/PVS-10 night optic.
Is it the safety lever in front of the bolt handle you are mentioning?
That is definitely not USMC Marpat it is the army cammies.
