I saw the same listing earlier, but noticed the seller had other bases besides the WB490, and the seller states he will choose which base he sends. If the seller sends the correct WB490 base, it will still need to be modified. Outback parts will sell you the piece that has already been modified for about the same price. I paid $55 for mine and it came with the hex screws to mount it to the rifle.

No I don't have any affiliation with them but they are a great source of some of the hard to find parts. I found them very reasonable.

I need some help with details regarding the M144 Spotting scope.

I'm looking for pics of :
1) Scope, and markings (particularly anything to show differences with the B&L 15-45x60 "commercial" version)
2) Tripod and markings (or a recommeded "next best thing to the original" to help find a clone)
3) Accessories and markings - (did find a nice pic of the eyepiece cover here from red6actual here; since it is in an "ad" that might "go way" , it would be nice to have it moved here ...hint, hint )

Also, PDF of manuals:

Tripod is Bushnell Shooters Stand (78-3011)
The M144 includes a Quick-Release Mount for attaching scope to tripod
A screw-on eye protection laser filter (LFU) made by Decilog, goes in front
An anti-reflection device (ARD) made by KillFlash, mounts onto the LFU, or directly to the scope
Light loss and image resolution are degraded >+15% using both filters

Last gov't purchase was for 4000 units @ $1,200/July 2002. They must be sitting in a warehouse untouched, because Army began issuing the Leupold M151 Enhanced Spotting Scope & Tripod to address the shortcomings of the M144 around the same period.

The bottom metal is not the std Rem. Its either Dakota Arms, or Sunny Hills. It has been covered thoroughly in this thread.

My rifle came back from Texas Brigade Armory a couple days ago, and I am very happy with it.

I was able to take it to the range yesterday and was easily able to match the "proof target". I hope to do a little more shooting today.

On the left is te "Proof Target" from TBA, on the right was my attempt using some M118LR clone I had loaded for another rifle. I haven't done any load development yet.

I wouldn't hesitate to use TBA again. Mikes wait times like many popular gunsmiths can be a little long. Mine was shorter than I expected,(8 months), but I had all the parts when I shipped them to him ,and I think he did me a favor as I spent most of that time over in Iraq. He had me call him weekly to check on the progress, which I felt bad about, but he encouraged so that I could keep up on where my build was at and he could know when I would be home. Mike is a real gentleman to deal with and a very talented gunsmith. It was a pleasure to do business with him.

I was wondering what "markings" I might change on the B&L to make it "look like" the M144.
I've found pics of the M144 details hard to locate on the internet.

There was no difference in markings from the civilian to the military that I am aware of. Mine had a paint pan writing of the unit and the scouts name/rank on the body, but I removed it accidentally when cleaning it. there was a made in japan engraved on the metal base along with the scopes part number. The front lens cover is different to accommodate the laser/ard devices.

Let me make it clear for a few of you. Most of you know this. The Marine M40 is more based of a Winchester 70. The M24 is a long action 700. The SS 5R is a short action, but has the same barrel as the M24. It has also been said it would of been better for the M24 to be a short action.

Actually, the SS 5R does not have the same barrel as the M24. The SS 5R is a standard Remington varmint countour. The only thing it has in common with the M24 is the rifling and I bet that is not exactly the same. The M24 barrel is a lot bigger more similar to a M40A1 contour.

Some one ring in and confirm this please.

The M40's were Remington 700. The bottom metal was Remington that was aluminum. When the USMC went to the M40a1 the bottom metal was Winchester M70 that was modified to fit the McMillan stock.

Yes, only thing on the SS 5R in common with the M24 is the rifling and ofcourse being made by Remington, the M24 has many specific parts that are not available on commercial riflles.

The differences between bottom metals have been covered thoroughly. I have both a PST-024 and PST-011 stocks. I compared both prior to assembly. I though sharing the results might help some of you understand the differences between both.

- As it has been said multiple times, the PST-024 is THE only stock that will fit the larger bottom metals and M24 contour barrel without any modifications whatsoever.

- The PST-011, and all other HS long action stock, need mods to accept the larger BM and the M24 barrel contour.

- Some people might think a standard BDL bottom metal from a donor Rem 700 will fit a PST-024 since it is smaller. WRONG. It doesnt fit.

Sunnyhill metal will fit a pst011 but not only will the opening have to be enlarged but also the radiuses changed, the dakota and sunnyhill units have smaller corner radiuses than the Remington factory metal. One last thing, your correct the depths to the pillars as you nicely stated in your tables show that if puting a sunnyhill bm in a pst011, you'll need to bed off one pillar between the BM contact and the pillar. I think its the front pillar that needs bedding. Now I may be wrong but I believe the forward tang on the Remington factory BM is thicker than the Dakota/Sunnyhill units. Since you have them available you might check that for sure. Converserly I believe the rear tang on the Dakota/Sunnyhill units are slightly thicker than the factory unit. Also the PST024 seems to have "root" of the grip curve or more forward extending around the rear BM tang whereas on the PST011 the root of the grip is further back, less curved so that the area around the rear tang on the latter is flatter. Since I don't have both a factory Remy unit or Sunnyhill in front of me for comparison I'm only going off of what I remember.

I've read a while back that many of the earliest rifles were in the Panama military arsenal before they were in US Army sniper's hands, reportadly and if true rightfully so pissed off the Army snipers! Prequal of Fast n'...well never-mind.
Operation Just Cause was officially Dec. 1989. I remember watching the news feed from it at my grandparents when I was eleven.

Yeh, you will! When you decide to do one over another, you'll find yourself getting cold feet over it as your initial build starts. Just remind yourself that you'll eventually do both or more and that will help calm your worries about making the right initial choice. Basically there is no right initial build, they're all the right build and you'll eventually get to the others.

Id like to know as well. I heard that M24's were seen at the Remington factory in 1987. When was the first shipment, hard to say...

The first 100 M24s were delivered on 25 October 1988 and another 100 on December 20th. Remington was awarded the contract on 22 July 1987, test weapons were submitted on 13 October 1987 and first prototype for military trials on 28 October 1987.

I seriously doubt that Panama got these before our Snipers but I have no information either way.

Been reading this thread since the start and finally cobbled all the parts together and sent them off to my smith for the winter build.

-HS PST024 stock
-Rem 700 long action
-Kreiger 5R, 11.25" twist barrel (as close as I could get to a Rem 5R spec barrel)
-old style 40x trigger with safety swapped for newer round knob type (again as close as I could get and looks similar when assembled
-Redfield style 490 rear sight base and .175 front base
-Badger #306-84 M24 dbm**
-Rem 20MOA MARS rail**
-Leupold M3 10x (1990s vintage with M118 marked elevation drum) and mil dot (of course)
-Early (1990s vintage) Leupold Mark 4 rings

** Yes these two parts are sort of irregular, my intent was to make it like some of the hybrids seen on "Top Sniper" which seemed to include a variety of accessories including some with Remington MARS rails and others with McCann MIRS rails. I do have a Dakota floor plate, ADL mag box and a Badger M24 one piece base(on the way..) to bring it closer to original if I choose.

Looking at the height of the MARS rail it will probably also get the foam/OD green duct tape cheek piece treatment as well.

I will post pics in a few months when I get it back.

Those weren't the cases you're looking for. They are a modern case that is the same as the scope case issued with the new M110 SASS.

I saw that $700+ price that was listed earlier. That's outrageous! Are you sure that they weren't confused with the Hardigg System Case? That case is $700+ but certainly not the scope case. Though they were insanely expensive a few years ago from Remington, they weren't that expensive. Something on the order of $200-$300 which I thought was crazy when I heard it. Mine came with the system so I never bought one but just keep your eyes open, they're showing up more often now.

The stock has to be HS Precision, and if you want an exact replica get the one without the adj cheekrest, only adj length of pull. You'll have to rig your own cheekrest like i did out of a pair of socks, moleskin and 100mph tape. If you want a clone thats more practical, get the new version of the same stock, has adj length of pull, but adj cheekrest also, so you don't need to field-rig your own cheekrest. (i wanted an actual fully-legit clone, even krylon painting it exactly the same as i did my service rifle)

Thanks to EODSIX's info, and a few pics I rustled up, the guy selling the scope cases was convinced they were not M24 cases, but rather the M110 SASS cases identified by EODSIX. He said he would change his ad, accordingly.

Not just ANY socks and duct tape....but US issue socks and duct tape.
Since the scope case sells for about $800, I have to imagine they cost the government close to $1000 for the items.

I actually prefer the black closed foam that comes in a crate between the two ammo cans and duct tape. A piece of sleeping pad, or a mouse pad from your computer works well too. I covered mine with a little piece of canvas from an old duffle bag, but that was going over the top. Moleskin works well too. I happen to have some US Issue closed foam that I mentioned with me. Its extremely rare stateside, for the right price I think I could seperate myself from a small section of it. Please don't try to owball me... this is the real deal. I took it out of a crate myself and hand carried it back from Iraq.

If I understand you correctly...
If I can find someone with an M24 (whether it be a military one or a Law Enforcement one), they (or "I" ???) can order a new optics case from Remington for $233.14 ?

I'm guessing that would hold true for other parts, as well (with varying prices of course) ?

Any special "rules" , like "must be ordered using department stationary" etc. ?

Interesting picture. Appears the soldier is wearing MarPat camo, USMC issue.

The flashider is mostly used with the AN/PVS-10 night optic.

Is it the safety lever in front of the bolt handle you are mentioning?

That is definitely not USMC Marpat it is the army cammies.
