Army M24 Build Thread

The RR serial number, and 2013 issue date, is not understood by me. Can someone explain how an M24 with RR prefix and 2013 in-service date happens?

I think that's about right. I have an RR prefix from that time period. Overall (not specifically on M24's), the RR prefix receivers began to be used in the latter part of 2012.

Came out of a junked fire weather station from 06. Found a replacement ball. I guess its from around the time dwyer was shipping meters with upgraded kit.

One of my M24 receivers has an interesting travel history..

Thats actually very neat...

Anyone have info on the tools/parts/misc items kit?
There's a spot in the Hardigg case for a Pelican 1120. I've seen a few pics of what's inside the case.
Curious to see if anyone has a whole spare kit, or has a packing list, and I'll build my own.

You could make it authentic to how mine was issued with most of the contents missing. I don't think any of the three M24's in my platoon had completely stocked d boxes, even when we went to OEF.
Right. It's not very realistic for me to try and find all the little screws/bolts and whatnot.
I'll likely just get a case and fill it with the wrenches and cleaning tools. Everything that I can get practical use out of.

I'd hate to have had to sign a hand receipt if it included every last piece in it >.<

A lot of the cleaning items in that d-box were supplemented by the Otis cleaning kit provided in the ASAK. That, along with some choice tools and the Seekonk wrench is what I took out on patrol most of the time. I don't I ever took out or used any of the spare screws or anything.

Yeah it will nearly impossible to gather up all the pieces as many of them are out of production. First off you'll want a Pelican 1100 not a 1120. They're out there on eBay every so often. The Cleaning Rod is a common M16 Cleaning Rod that was either painted black or DuraCoted. Same for the Toothbrush which was a standard M16 brush except that it was black, not painted but black plastic. The Oil Bottle was Breakfree. The Chamber Brush used to be available at Midway USA, Brownells and other places known as the Remington Chamber Cleaning Brush Remington 4, 7400 but I think they're gone now as well. It was an expendable item so they would have disappeared rather quickly in common use. Hope this helps some.

All the parts were in these little ziplock bags and hand numbered to correspond with the numbers in the TM.

This is a shot of the page from the original TM which was later converted to the sketch in the subsequent TMs.

This is the Optics Cleaning Kit which is a real unicorn for certain.

Thanks @eodsix that did help!
Wish I would have waited, ordered an 1120 last night >.<.
I think I'm just going to get the basics. Just toss in an M16 cleaning kit, misc brushes and wrenches. As long as I fill the slot in the Hardigg and it has use (y)

Dang. I'm the weirdo making back-to-back posts......

Does anyone have a lead on a Redfield WB490 rear base plate?
I found out my GAP rifle is NOT coming with the Redfield front base, or rear base (even though the pictures indicate they're installed....)
I ordered a copy front base from Pacific Tool and Gauge, but their rears are on back order.

If one were looking for a way to fill out their d-box, Birchwood Casey has looped handgun cleaning brushes. They come in a tube of 3, one of the local gunshops had them so I bought a pack. Put two 45 degree bends into it and crush the loop and you have a decent analog.

Fair Dinkum

I'll have to do that too!
I originally planned on leaving my box empty. But then I came across 10 (of the 41 original items), in their numbered bags. So I now feel half obligated to get more parts =/

Picked this up at a local gun shop today. Needed a new cleaning rod jag and saw thus sitting on a display case. 599+tax, got it for 525. I think I did well. 1999 vintage, has a mildot reticle, turrets are nice and tight with good solid clicks. Came with the sun shade. Dropping it on my m24 Sunday. Hopefully nothing is locked up…

Friends, photo dump incoming.
I have finished (enough for me) my m24 day optics case and the tools/parts/accessories case. Both of which go in the Hardigg deployment case.

I'm referencing all these parts to their numbers from the TM (1-42). Most of these were purchased from an awesome dude who was an M24 armorer back in the day. (The order below isn't in perfect numerical, as I'm just listing them based on the pics I took)

2x #1: One without logo, that says "The Pelican Box" on the bottom. The other is a NOS Pelican 1100 with logo in the bottom right.
#24 Day optic turret dust cover
#41 Cleaning rod kit in a neat little pouch.
^(Edit: It's actually an M1 Garand cleaning rod. Kinda cool it ended up being used on M24s though.)
#30 Dog-leg cleaning brush
#37 1/2 wrench
#32 cleaning bottle
#13-19 allen wrench bag
Numbered bags 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 38, (unlabeled bag that has what look like #6s and 3s/4s)
#36 Seekonk torgue wrench, 65inLBS
#35 socket with allen bit?
#20 T-handle combo wrench

NOS days optics case. Everything in here has been acquired from random places.
Apologies for the terrible picture, I can replace it if needed :)

Redfield front + Redfield Palma Rear irons, + little box of the (aperatures?) that came with them.
Flash hider + locking ring. Purchased from the awesome, previously mentioned, m24 armorer.
4x M24 binos ARD rubber caps (I believe)
2x butler creek caps. They came in my Hardigg case. (I think they're #28 and 29 from the list)
1x The EMA filter thingy. Also came in my Hardigg.

Wow, nice swipe. You paid less than I did back in the 90's.
Leupold & Stevens will lifetime warranty those scopes unless it needs parts they no longer have in stock. Run it through a box test at your range to confirm its tracking correctly. And give L&S a call to ask if they can send you an owners manual. I just shipped them an old Vari-X II that developed mildew inside the front objective lens. Word is they just semd you a brand new scope thats comparable because the labor to rebuild costs them more

Look on Gunbroker.com, a seller named GunRepairCenter has some items for sale that might help complete the contents. There's also a Hide member here that sells the original Remington marked sling swivells on ebay, ILikeBMXBikes

FYI, your #41 cleaning rod is that for the M1 Carbine and the handle is a multitool for the carbine.
Gotcha! I figured it wasn't the exact one. Still kinda neat knowing the Army was throwing M1 carbine cleaning kits in with these rifles though.

Will do. Thanks.
I have 3 sets of the sling swivels now lol. I accidentally bought 2x from BMX on Ebay. And parts bag #7 has a set in it!

Back again friends!
Just picked up my GA Precision M24 (ordered December 2023).
Tossed all the required stuff on it: Eagle Industries cheekpad/ammo thingy, M1917 sling on M24 swivels, Harris 1A2 9-13” bipod, NSN packaged Leupold Mk4 rings, R suffix Leupold Mk4 fixed 10x mildot reticle, SIMRAD ring cap.
I'm still missing my rear irons base plate. Should have it this week.
(Yes I wish it was an original gun......but that's next on my buy-list!!)

Hello all, I was going to install my MARS rail on my A2 last night and it seems to have 8-40 screws but my action screw holes on the C stamped action are 6-48. I read a singular forum post on here that it originally was supposed to come with spacer sleeves and 6-48 screws as well so you could use either, does anyone happen to have a set of the 6-48 screws and the spacers they’re not using or a screw/spacer spec so I can order some?

Those are going to be a hunt, for sure, unless someone has a set they didn't use. If you need a visual reference, they look exactly like these, just tiny little bushings.

Are you shooting 300WM or 308? Personally, that would be my only consideration although 6-48 may still be sufficient. I fail to see that by using the same rifle and scope, but installing a MARS in place of a standard rail that has a few more inches of metal, would cause a need to change screw sizes. One of the better arguments I have seen for manufacturers going to 8-40 is that it is a more widely accepted size screw and 6-48 is more of a specialty screw not used often outside of the gun world. (cheaper component)

I don't want to disrupt one of my favorite threads on the forum with a screw thread debate, so I will just point you to the engineering nerd version of the 6-48 vs 8-40:

I just got my barreled action back and didn’t want to send it off again, but I’m starting to think that’s the right thing to do. Just a little bummed as I was excited to get it out to the range. But that’s cloning I guess haha
Ive heard MIRS can shear off mounting bolts from impact to its forward rail section. MARS probably the same, especially with smaller bolts?

The procedure to rethread your existing 6-48 holes to 8-40 is not complicated if you have basic skills. Spacing & hole alignment has already been done at the factory. All you do is drill out the existing threads to fit the diameter of the correct 8-40 drill bit & thread tap. Ive done this to a few Remington 700 Police & 700 PSS (Police Sharp Shooter) factory rifles myself.

A thin coat of epoxy bedding like Devcon, MarineTex, or AcrglasGel would also work well between reciever & mount surfaces, and dont use any release agent. At the very least, dope the bolts threads with Loctite® #262
