Gunsmithing best way to freshen crown on mod 70 target

Re: best way to freshen crown on mod 70 target

If your crown is cut at a right angle to the bore there's no need to indicate anything really.

So long as you can capture the OD of the barrel securely (meaning a barrel with no taper) you can just wizz the face. A right angle is a right angle regardless of bore center.

BUT if your going to go through the trouble why not set it up with a 4 jaw/spider and single point a true 11*? You may find it looks nicer and may even shoot a smidge better.

Good luck.

The gun was in storage 40+ years and had a little surface rust, owner had her blued and the smith blued face, I took 400 wet dry and buffed the face white , a q tip seems to catch a small bur that my 57 yr old eyes cannot detect. This gun does not shoot quiet as well as a '55 model I have or is a little more picky vis ammo seems to like the 180 gr best, bore is beautiful , rifling is strong. Im out of 06 match ammo and was testing with fed, win and hornady deer loads I had on hand. I usually sight in with cheap and use match to see what a gun will do. Im out of the 06, 168 and 175 gr fed match fodder.

I find the best way to freshen things is with febreeze or scented lysol spray....

Just kidding, girly moment!

Does the current crown look/measure nice and square? You might consider a slight chamfer to the lip of the bore. Just to clean up any small issues with the tip of the lands. Just a thought. Good luck either way.

bingo, You hit nail on head, ( slight chamfer to lip) . The true collector value to this gun was lost when original owner had it blued even though smith did a very nice job, Im more of a hunter, shooter pre 64 lover. I will not own a gun and not shoot it and it must shoot well to stay.
