Rifle Scopes Blow 2 scopes on a .50 bmg so far......

Actually 3 but the CSO scope didn't count as to its not a real scope. But I blew a Bushnell that came on the rifle, it just quit working both elevation and wind-age. And then I placed a DMR Millet scope on it and blew it with 2 shots.One of the lenses dislodged from the tube. And the CSO scope I just kept shooting it till no lenses was left in place. Funny those rare earth gasses smelled allot like BS to me LOL

So I am looking for a cheap alternative scope to just place on a anti material {blow stuff up } rifle that won't get destroyed.

I am looking at Vortex PST optics but there site does not state they are ok for .50 bmg. Looking for anybody that has had issues or any experience with placing them on a Barrett 99

SWFA are supposedly tested for 50BMG. I'm going to give mine a shot and see how it handles it when my rifle shows up next week.

Cheap is a relative term and generally has no place within miles of a big boomer. You can go "cheap" in terms of price (which often equates to substandard quality) or you can buy once and forget about problems down the road...its your rifle/optic and your call.

For "cheap" in terms of price but for a scope that will handle the recoil impulses and muzzle blast of the .50BMG, the fixed power SWFA Super Sniper scopes are the best bang for the buck. You pick between 10x, 12x, 16x or 20x, mount it in decent rings, and you should be good to go.

Agreed on the SWFA, we have the 10x on our Barretts here at work. Only one parallax knob and one windage knob gone so far across a few dozen guns and a couple thousand rounds through each.

Get the rear focus version, not the side.

defenitely SWFA line of fixed power, a friend of mine has a 20X on his AR50 for over 8 years and many many rounds down range without any issues.

We have a Leupold Mk IV on the rental 50 at work. It has held up great and only needs re-zeroing about once every 1000 rnds or so. It isnt cheap by any stretch of the imagination, but it works damn well.

honestly, at 5$ a shot and at least a 2000-3000$ rifle, why make your optics the weak point. vortex is the least expensive thing i'ed put on a large caliber rifle like that. i've been doing a lot of nightforce and vortex on big rifles like that lately.

Ok maybe cheap was a poor choice of words as my M82A1 has a new Perm-ire Reticule and I have Leupold's and night-force on all other guns. But this gun is the one I keep in the car and beat the hell out of. It has a short barrel and suppressor and it is used mostly for destruction of things and items everywhere. I am not entering a match nor am I shooting very long range maybe 500 yds. Mostly Rufus and spotter or APIT are fired with this gun I just want something to get me on target without blowing the glass and turrets off I would like to spend no more than 700$ And just wanted to know if any on tried the PST. But the vote seems to be the SWFA SS so I will look at that. Thanks

The SSs will break eventually. 36 rounds on a bud's rifle, 220 on mine.

USO ST-10 fixed objective or ERGO will take a licking and keep on ticking with the 50.

I've seen two Nightforce scopes fail at 50 matches thus far. I used a fixed 20x SWFA SS with good results for my first two matches. No issues at all and pushing 200 rounds. I recently put a SWFA SS 5-20X HD model on for my primary scope. The original 20x will serve as a back-up. All scopes can fail. I'd base my scope decision less on price and more on warranty service for that very reason.

Really, that few rounds? What the heck were you shooting it on? Regardless I would expect SWFA to replace it as their warranty is great.

I wonder if he's implying this because the rate the powder burns? A quicker burst with lower energy or a longer push with more energy. Regardless I'll directly compare the two soon and provide feedback.

I remember when I was in the service , Horus just hit the market and they gave us 3 "Hawk" model optics.... all three shit the bed and the only Horus item that went over the pond with us was a Horus "talon" 1-4x.... somehow that glass took a year long beating and kept ticking.

So, the average 50 puts 33 ft lbs of rearward energy into the shoulder, then immediately moves forward at 40 ft lbs.

The 338LM tops both of these figures?

Yes, obiviously it is one of those "things".
Accleration is different than energy. Thats why they have different units for them in mathematics/physics.

If you are interested to get further info on this, see ISO 9022 1-13 and compare it against milspec scope datasheets. Then find out what kind of accleration peaks light 338 with brake produces.

Having put many rounds out of multiple braked 50s - McM, Serbu, all the Barretts, and fired AI, Montana, Barrett, and Sako 338s, braked and suppressed, I don't know what papers you are referencing, but I know what the two chamberings shoot like.

i use the 16 on my 18 pound 50, i have 400 to 500 rounds on it.. no issues.. and if u do F it up. SWFA will fix

Have been using a Leupold MK4 4.5X14 TMR on my Barrett 338 MRAD. No problem holds zero at 100 yd and tracks well. SFP non illuminated. Cost me $899 new at my LGS. Switching out now for March 5X40, just because of my old eyes.

overall push/kick of a .50bmg is obviously pretty damn harsh, but as mentioned, the acceleration of the .338 lapua is actually sharper (in other words, scopes on a 338 are jerked faster than scopes on a 50 bmg, even though the 50 bmg moves more)
In essence, 338 lapua "theoretically" should destroy more scopes than 50bmg.

Back on topic, id suggest be patient and look for a used super sniper 5-20 on the for sale section. I see them pop up occasionally around a thousand or less, and that'd prob be your best honest bet.
used mine for over 300 rounds on my Viper XL 50bmg, hasn't taken a shit yet.

Thanks for the reply s I just went with Night Force said screw it and bought one. As for the inquiry on the "anti materiel rifle" That's exactly what it is no more no less. I have other guns that fit the super long range bill. And when you save enough for a .50 then you will be from the same planet of "OMG THAT's FUCKING COOL" LOL
