It seems that all the bolts I have seen done don't look like mine. The fluting just doesn't seem quite right. When the bolt is closed shouldn't the fluting travel further down my bolt? I'm just not happy with it and it looks weird. It almost looks like half a flute job was done...

Or perhaps there is a reason for this?

at this point it's too late for my opinion on fluted bolts

this is kind of a grey area here. i am sure you didn't specify where the flutes should start and stop and i'm sure your fluter didn't ask you or tell you where they would start and stop. there is no spec for fluting so it is just a matter of opinion on what looks good. i don't know what kind of resolve can be done on this one but i'd talk to your fluter and let him know that it wasn't what you had in mind. if he works with you, great. if not, unless there was something stating that they would be different that what you got, well...


but honestly, looking at your picture, i think his x0 was off. it looks like the flutes are well into the rear bridge but 3/8" or so shy of the front bridge. my honest opinion is he missed. a decent machinist should be able to make it how you want it but it is going to take a bit of messing with to get the twist and indexing to match where the existing flutes left off.


moral of the story is don't flute your bolts in the ejection port area of a remington style action

Looks like the cut was made on center and shouldn't be to hard to pick up. Maybe he can just extend the fluting a little farther forward. Good luck.

Hahaha! You nailed it. It's just my kind of luck. Don't make me tell you my worse week I've had; you wouldn't believe me. Well, I do want the bolt fluted a bit more foward. I can either have him flute it a bit more foward or send it in to campfield... Decisions, decisions!

Would this be sudgested since I don't need a full flute job done? Or can my smith just run the flute out a little bit further?

The smith said he can't run it any further because it will mess with "can't remember exactly what he said" something that is welded on the bolt?

I want to run it a bit further to an expert on this so it runs inside the front bridge if I can.

It just looks like dog shit to me and a couple people already asked me why it the fluting runs so far back into the rear bridge and stops short of the front bridge when ran home.

Any sudgestion's will be greatly appreciated.

you have already got your answer, seems you just want to confirm it. The guy doesn't know what he is talking about. All my spiral fluted bolts from Kampfeld extend all the way out of sight.

Just send it to Kampfeld and remember what kind of work this other guy does.

i know for a fact i could continue the flutes the rest of the way. if i can do it, i know some of the smiths here that offer cnc helical flutes can do it too. honestly though, it may cost more than the original flute job. first i would need to figure out what the exact twist/length the flutes are. then i would make full length cuts and use a slightly larger cutter or the same size cutter with two offset passes to ensure there isn't a mark where the old flutes left off. it will take more time than starting with a blank.

since i don't do customer work, i'd suggest contacting some of the smiths here. maybe pm bolt fluter and see if he is willing to make it the way you want it. replacing the bolt without doing other receiver and barrel work doesn't make much sense.

Just had to open the safe and take a look at the fluted bolt on the G A P Crusador. The flutes stop about 3/16" from the front bridge with the bolt closed. This is just behind the M16 type extractor slot. If you have a non-Remmy extractor maybe that is why the smith stopped short of where you wanted him to.

If that is a Rem700 then yes it does look a little weird as to why he stopped early. I had my bolt done by Kampfield with his TI flutting and the flute work ends about flush with the receiver.
