i wanna "jail brak" my aac defender's locking device off to service the locking device.

i have the gen 1 model with set screw and once i remove the setscrew i need to some how break the ____ not sure if they use red locktite or rockset but i am curious how to break either of these loose.

i was told hot boiling water... if so for how long

Re: breaking rockset or red locktite loose??

I have had some luck in the past with applying direct heat from the tip of a soldering iron. I am not familiar with your specific part, so I don't know if this would be possible. The bigger the part, the bigger the tip that you can use. Once you break it loose, work it back and forth very gently till you get it all of the way off.

How long will also depend on the size of the part. The bigger it is the longer you will have to apply the heat.

Hope this will help.

Re: breaking rockset or red locktite loose??

If AAC did the assembly, contact them before going any further. There's various types of red loctite, both industrial and commercial. They require heat to break them loose. Rocksett is a high temperature water based product that requires soaking in water to break free. Watch halfway through this video http://www.youtube.com/user/NOLATAC#p/a/u/0/kPrkQHFyK38 .

dang soak it for 24 hrs how ever he didnt say it had to be hot water so i could kill two birds with one stone by soaking it to get the rockset loose i also get a chance to soak the carbon for a pre cleaning

Re: breaking rockset or red locktite loose??

I doubt boiling will do anything. From the Loctite website:

Loctite® Threadlocker Red 271™ is designed for the permanent locking and sealing of threaded fasteners. The product cures when confined in the absence of air between close fitting metal surfaces. It protects threads from rust and corrosion and prevents loosening from shock and vibration. It is only removable once cured by heating up parts to 500°F (260°C).

black_ump, check out www.toolandfab.com/forum/showthread.php?t=447. Lists a few tricks of the trade, centering around application of heat, torque, and chemicals (MEK, Methylene Cl). As mentioned above, Loctite makes many variants of "red" Threadlocker (eg. 271 HS, 271 HD, 272 HT, etc). Appears that co-application of heat and torque might work.

edit: before i crack this thing open... makeing small repairs ( such as a locking device repair ) to a suppressor is that ok or does the atf say its a no no

Huh?

Just don't alter the tube, engraving, or caliber and you will be fine. Just be careful how much you mess with it because if you break it AAC will tell you to pay up when you send it in for repairs. They don't honor purposely broken suppressors.
