I built this rifle for JW III. He wanted it for the USO booth at 2011 Shot Show. John let the cat out of the bag a little last Aug. and posted pictures of the stock. Here is the completed rifle. The stock was made by Joel Russo, it is Bubinga wood that is heavy and dense. As you can see, the wood is awesome. The pictures hardly do it justice. The rifle is a 30-06, and has a Bartlein barrel. The test firing produced a .250” group with the 2nd to the 6th shoots at 100 yards.

Re: Bubinga Wood A5 Rifle

Bubinga is a BEAUTIFUL wood. I have a stack of it sitting in my garage currently, waiting to be made into a bed. VERY expensive wood, but well worth the price.

That is an amazing display of craftsmanship. If you dont mind me asking, how much did the stock end up costing?

The stock was supplied to me by John from Joel Russo. I think Joel made John a great deal on this stock. Joel told me a stock with that kind of grain pattern in bubinga would cost $1800. Check with Joel to be sure.

That's pretty cool. Needs a wood bolt knob though

Thats not a bad Idea, I could do that.

Throw a threaded insert into a Bubinga bolt knob.+1

Re: Bubinga Wood A5 Rifle

I am getting ready to send it over to Pete Jr. at Cor-Bon to have him play with some loads. Talking with him at the show he said that we should be able to get some 210 Berger's to shoot well out of it.

Ray did a great job on the rifle, it was one of those projects that he just didn't want rush. Ray was scared to put any dings or scratches in it. At SHOT nobody from USO wanted to take it out of the vault in fear of scratching it, I figure it will happen eventually.

Thanks again Ray and Joel, it is by far the most gorgeous rifle I have ever seen!

Re: Bubinga Wood A5 Rifle

Very nice rifle John I'm sorry I missed seeing it at the show.

Joel is making one for me right now from a laminated blank of madrone that one of my customers made. He got the material from a fallen tree on his property in California and that is the hardest wood I've ever cut into. It wore out drill bits and sawblades real quick. I'll post up pics when I finish his build.

Re: Bubinga Wood A5 Rifle

Excellent rifle, more a work of art than a weapon. I made a knife last week with a scrap of Bubinga I had. I bet the guy that did the sanding wore a mask. If not he's still feels like he drank a bottle of hot sauce. Stuff is very irritating. Here's how Buginga looks on a Damascus skinner/field knife. When they tell you the camera does not do it justice believe them. Wood looks three feet deep when polished. Camera can't show that. Donald

Beautiful piece of wood! I did a bar top for a client in Bubinga. It costs about $25 per bf. Hard, hard material to work with.
