what is the point of a bull barrel on a .22lr,.17hmr, or .22wmr. i have a .17hmr with a bull barrel and have shot about 100 rounds non stop trying to true my scope. after all those rounds my barrel was only warm and felt nice to the touch because it was cold out.between 50 and 100 rounds i like to clean my gun because the accuracy get a little off. by the time im done cleaning the barrel is cold. i was just wanted to know if the bull barrel was a selling point, something bigger "cooler" calibers need so why not put it on a rimfire to make it seem "cooler" i guess you could say? or is there real accuracy gain in having that larger barrel.

it's also a way of taming percussion based vibrations in the barrel too. More mass = less magnitude. Makes the rifle a little more forgiving to variances in powder and bullets. Someday I wish we could get primed rimfire brass to do custom loads without pulling bullets...but for now a bull barrel is just a little added insurance for consistency, or the chase of, anyway.

btw, humping a bull barrel around for hunting sucks.

In the case of a trainer or practice rifle I would want it set up as close as I could get it to my primary or comp rifle. For me it would have more to do with quality practice less to do with weather or not it helps aid accuracy.

Quit cleaning, .22s only need cleaning when accuracy drops off.
Could be hundreds or even thousands of rounds.
It can take 20-30 rounds to get back to a stable condition after cleaning.

The heavy barrels on .22's were there as much to aid holding as to promote true accuracy. This was for offhand and positon shooting. Now it is more to duplicate the tactical rifle, I guess. I carried an M40 for two years and had no problem with the weight. It is about making the shot when the trip is done. Only the heavier rifles are so sure and forgiving.

Repeatability. I have a 17 HMR with a bull barrel, and one without. The one with a bull barrel is more accurate and used for target practice/ground hogs where I can be reasonably stationary in a field, the one without is much lighter and used for lugging through the woods.

That said, I clean my 22wmr every 15-20 rounds with a bore snake (2 passes, no lube) and every 100 or so with patch and rod, using shooters choice. it has seen in excess of 2k rounds in the past 10ish years and still shoots well.

Please consider leaving the barrel alone when you clean your rifle. On my 10-22 based rifles, I clean the actions to get the powder residue out and re-lube but leave the barrels alone.
The greatest risk to that barrel accuracy is the cleaning rod. Resist shoving a rod down that tube unless absolutely necessary. What is necessary? You drop the rifle and get mud in the barrel. Otherwise, leave it alone.

Bull barrel on my Savage 17 HMR, sporter barrel on my <span style="font-style: italic">other</span> Savage 17 HMR.
One with bull barrel is definitely more accurate than the sporter, but inappropriate for lugging around the woods.

The exception to what I posted is the 17HMR. We picked up a lot of copper fouling when the barrels were new. After about 1000 rounds, the copper fouling was much less.
Use a wet patch, let it sit for an hour or two then follow with more patches. I leave the rifle in the garage, watch a TV show then hit it with another patch.
Once in a while, run a brush down the tube without reversing it in the barrel. Use absolutely no scrubbing! Let Butches or Hoppes do the work chemically. I like the smell of Hoppes but Butches worked better if you can handle the stink!
When new, we did this to our 17HMR barrels repeatedly until patches came out with no green color. It took up to three days to clean a new barrel!
If you use Butches, finish with a lightly oiled patch. That stuff will remove all oil.

i didn't shoot the bv and the f on the same day, so it's still apples and oranges. the bv also has a 3/4 lb trigger and the f has a 2 lb 12 oz trigger, so all can't be truly compared evenly, but should at least give some idea if the heavier barrel is as important on rimfires as it is on centerfires.
hopefully some of the cold and wind i'm experiencing here will subside and i could make a better bull barrel vs. regular barrel comparison with calmer conditions, including a cold bore comparison.
