It will be my first time down at Rifle's Only and I just wanted to get an idea of what type of conditions to expect. I take it this wont be your run of the mill belly contest, and I expect a high degree of professional shooters to be attending. Anything that I should do before hand, such as specific training, ect..

Look forward to seeing some Hide members there.

You should expect wind...lots of it. In the past, Most stages have been dynamic in nature, and on the clock. Expect mag changes, and to move from position to position with bolt back and mag out, including movement during the stage itself.

Most of all, expect to have a great time and to learn plenty whil expecting the unexpected. Plenty of good shooters will be there. Rifles Only is a great place, and they set the bar. I can't wait for it.

In the past, you'll always get a round count and an explanation of the course of fire. I've never run an autoloader, so I would defer to Jacob/Lisa or the RO for what they consider acceptable, but I've seen gas gunners have to drop a live round and lock the BCG back. I wouldn't worry about it. The upshot is that you'll be able to absolutely wear out the mover(s) much faster than the rest of us throwing a bolt, and if we get to shoot a variation of moving chaos, it's one less thing for you to have to work with.

The rat trap is a sight to behold, and a hell of a lot of fun to shoot, mostly because it makes you think and plan more than just shoot. I love/hate it.

The thing is this, if you have good dope, are comfortable with uncomfortable positions, time constraints, and can read the wind, you'll do great. Most of the points are usually at 7-800 and in.

Re: Bushnell Brawl 2012

In the past gas gunners have been required to eject the live round and lock the bolt back. Many have elected to load several mags with just enough rounds for each movement/position to save a step/ammo. Realistically, the second or two it takes for the extra step will never make or break you on a stage if the rest of your movement is well thought out and smooth.

It is definitely not a belly shooting match. Jacob sticks to his saying that successful employment of the precision rifle is more about thinking than shooting. You will move, shoot, move some more, shoot from alternate/improvised positions- all under time constraints.

Expect a great time. I have been shooting matches there for 7 years and am always dying for the next event.

Re: Bushnell Brawl 2012

Having trained/competed at R.O. with an AR10 and a bolt gun on different occasions, there are advantages and disadvantages to the gas gun.
Movers and multiple target engagements from a static location, eg. (5 hanging plates of differing sizes at 500 yd.s for time)favor the gas gun.
Having to take one shot from atop stacked concrete culverts, pull the mag, stow the mag,(dump pouch), pull the charging handle to the rear, (dumping a round), and holding it rearward with one hand while locking the bolt open with your other hand, while perched atop the culverts, before you can move to the next stage ...not as easily done as simply lifting the bolt handle and drawing it to the rear, (prior to movement), with the bolt gun.
Then, upon arrival at the next stage, (but not before),you must re-insert the mag, release the bolt, check to make sure it is in battery, put on the safety and get ready to take the next shot.
I've done it once with a bolt gun and twice with a gas gun.
Overall, I don't think the gas gun gives you enough of a speed advantage to compensate for the added hassle manipulating it compared to a bolt gun.

Re: Bushnell Brawl 2012

Running a gas gun there will be fine and in my opinion an advantage. But I would utilize the load "X" mags with "X" rounds and let the rifle do the work for you. Screw that "pull the charging handle back and eject a round" bs. Three shots then move? Three in the mag, bolt locks back automatically, move, load fresh mag, rinse and repeat.

Unless things have changed it WILL NOT be a belly match. It's always a fun, dynamic and exciting time at RO. Be prepared for your fun cup running over.

*and when I refer to the "...eject a round bs" I'm not referring to the safety aspect of not moving with a loaded chamber, I'm referring to take advantage of the ability of the rifle to lock the bolt back for you. Just so there's no confusion.
