looking around when i found the .700 nitro express which seems like pure over kill in itself. but after some more serching i discovered the 2 bore which looks like a portable cannon shooting a 3500 grain slug at 1500fps. i want to know what is the hardest hitting round in terms of ft'lbs. and has anyone ever handeled anything like a 2 bore or .700 nitro.

The 50 BMG has to up near the top in energy and does quite well at distance, something that cant be said of the clunky african cartridges. The down side is it's weight and size.

You appear to be disussing purely muzzle energy (lbf) at the muzzle. The 460 Weatherby is around 8,000 lbf and the 50 BMG around 12,000 if my memory is correct. I's suspect the new replacements for the 50 BMG (416 CheyTac, 416 Barnett, etc) are in that same energy area, otherwise informally known as a "whole bucket full."
I would have to go look at the classic African rounds to know where they rate. The PO Ackley books list some other impressive rounds also.

I thought that any gun with a caliber larger than .50 is considered a destructive device and the ATF won't let you own it with some really special permit?

20mm is the largest shoulder fired conventional rifle I have heard of.
I believe the M67 Recoiless Rifle may pack a good punch though.
Either of them will kill any living creature on the planet.
Now is there an actually point to this? Because anything out there can be trumped by anyone looking to go bigger. Generally common sense is to choose the tool based on the task, not just selecting the biggest hammer available. Unless of course you are compensating for a shortcoming in another area.
