Calypso AB Mini Ultrasonic Wind Meter

Has anyone ordered and received one of these in the past few months, let alone had any comms? I'm getting the worst vibes.

In Oct I ordered one via the website. Well, actually I ordered two accidentally: first order timed out, so I did it successfully a second time, but both charges showed up (ugh). Then I sent an email asking if both orders went through and if so, please cancel one of them. Simple reply: "your order went through".

Radio silence since then.

I ordered mine in the beginning of November, called about an update, and was told the same thing: change of supplier and updated hardware (was the jist of what I remember), should be shipping within the next 2 weeks.

Update: I just got a shipment notification, order date is Nov 18.

Just got the Kilo 10Ks Gen2 binos. On paper this with the AB mini unit would be a solid and seamless option on a tripod plate at a match. Any experiences with this setup recently? Worth getting yet or still too many bugs and issues to deal with?

So what all does this one do?

I’m under the impression, that the AB unit works well with the Hornady app. I ordered one just a week ago talked with some other users. They said it was a great help finding a consistent wind average. Seeing the high and lows. How long they lasted or how short. Great way to see you wind brackets. I keep reading people fussing about not having a compass on it. Evidently you guys haven’t fought with the Famous Kestrel and its compass issues.
I’m so sick of fighting the kestrel it’s an over priced product that is very out dated. With the mini calypso and it working with the hornady app. I’m looking forward to not needing the kestrel at all. The H app will get all its weather data and wind direction from the mini. Working the wind and target like a clock is the easiest way. Spinning your finger around on the screen or sliding it across is so much faster and easier. Than clicking back and forth between screens to set and see the dope. A compass on the mini would be just one more thing to fight with. I’d only recommend one if it could be toggled on and off. I also seen a post tonight that 4DOF is going to do some updates to the solver. Looks like they maybe be getting the edge on the Kestrel.
I’m glad I’m not alone.

I sent my kestrel in to NK with compass issues and it not holding data. They quote a 3-4 day turnaround incentives, they had mine for a month, and sent it back “no issues found”.

Between AB quantum and some other stuff, I’ll never buy one of their products again. The product is finnicky as fuck (how does it lose calibration is easy when a cell phone doesn’t…) their support sucks ass, and it’s priced way high.

@DocUSMCRetired can you guys add support for the weather flow wind meter ballistic?

At this time we have no plans to add the Weatherflow devices, our focus is on AB Ecosystem devices. Once those are all implemented we will revisit non-AB devices. if Weatherflow releases an AB Ecosystem device with our protocols that would change. At this time I am not aware of anything in the works.

What qualifications does this need to be an eco system? Are you not trying to help
The shooter? If that isn’t the goal, than what is? Could you please kindly explain that to me.

The device itself needs to carry the AB Communication's protocols. Right now our focus is on integrating things that carry the AB Comms in them. We may revisit non AB systems in the future once full integration has been achieved, but a faster path for devices is if they carry our protocols and are a part of the Ecosystem. This makes integration much more seamless, and features the encryption needed to retain our ITAR and Military/LEO compliance.

How do they use the AB logo and use it for sales. If they are not using the correct coms or protocol? Seems like they or one would make sure its viable before using the AB signature.

I am not sure I understand, the WeatherMETERS are not an AB Ecosystem device so the devices themselves wouldn't have the AB Logo. But at this time they are not running AB Protocols nor are they in the AB Ecosystem.

That is a Calypso product. I think there is some confusion around the "WeatherDot" product name and the competing company WeatherFLOW.

I had an issue with my 5700x compass not holding calibration.

They had me run some tests that found nothing wrong. Blamed magnets. I ran further tests making sure no magnets where ever close and still had issues. I protested (nicely) and they replaced it.

Problem magically went away with replacement …….

The replacement was consistent with my experience with my former 2105 5700 AB.

Awesome, thanks for the Answer Doc!

You replied under a comment for the WeatherFLOW/WeatherMETERS this is what I was basing your replies under. As for the Calypso that is going to be integrated in a future update.
So will the Calypso be compatible with the Elite or just the X, with the future update.
Sorry for the confusion earlier.

FWIW, mine arrived and integration with MARS seems to work fairly easily; just need to test on a shoot soon.

On a side note, try to but from a dealer and not go directly through them. I’m still dealing with the headache of one order leading to two charges, leading to one item shipping, to me trying to get a refund for the extra order, to them promising to ship out the second one I don’t need, and me trying to explain “no, I never wanted two”

Anyone that is waiting on the AB Mini. Sounds like the hold up will be well worth it. From the sounds of it they fixed a lot of the bugs with it. Can’t wait to put it to the test. Looks like I’ll have mine by Tuesday. Sure hope it’s a nice weekend coming up.

Okay so got to play with it a little today. Purely as a steaming wind app through the phone, it’s very handy. I can see the value of constant wind collection while worrying about other things and checking on the average over time.

As a pairing device being utilized in the AB ecosystem…it doesn’t. As far as I can tell. According to the mini AB app, it for sure pairs with my Sig Kilo 10K gen2 binos, but the binos don’t adjust solutions based off what the calypso is supposedly giving it. There is a chance I don’t have the settings on the binos right to receive that info, so I’m going to reach out to sig and see.

If I have any settings wrong and can find out how to get the two to work, I’ll update

Do you have the Hornady app by chance? Seen a pretty sweet video with that. Looked like it was changing the values on it. I wasn’t sure also finding videos yesterday where they were hooking it up to the Garmin watch. I am wondering if it will change the values on it. I did see it was showing wind readings.

Yea this is a no go for me.

If you’re going to tout your “system integration” capabilities and it not work on half your stuff, it’s pointless and a 400 dollar waste.

AB not being able to take readings on their app with their own ecosystem upon release is sort of broken.

For the time being, my dollar will not support the development of this. Basically I think it’s all in Nielsen-Kellermann hands. Whenever they will replace the impeller with an ultrasonic sensor to determine the wind vector, then will be the time for me to get serious and throw more money in the pit.
Maybe this will simply not happen and then it will become essentially more a system integration issue. Being a network engineer I would like not to spend my hobby time troubleshooting wireless miscommunication issues…too much kinda work guys.

Exactly this. I feel totally scammed by Calypso. Incomplete ecosystem integration and a dumpster fire of an app. Now there’s a rumoured v2 to fix bugs.

Until it integrates with AB quantum it’s a moot point.

Having an ecosystem of devices with your label slapped on it that don’t talk to each other is dumb.

Received mine today.

Does not connect to the Garmin Foretrex 901 (2.12 firmware, which supports it). Also does not connect to other Garmin devices (Tactix). Maybe @Garmin has insight into this. The directions on the support website pretty straightforward but simply doesn't see the AB Mini.

Connects to Android and iOS just fine.

Obviously it looks like Kestrel is a toss up for future implementation.

The app is pretty basic - you hold down the fields to change them. The configurator confirms the firmware is up to date.

I have done some extensive talking with the people at Calypso. So everyone knows, the original mini will hook up with Hornady app.
The mini AB will not hook up to the Hornady app. Which is very frustrating when both use the kestrel, by both I mean Hornady and Applied Ballistic. Both will give you wind speed and direction. Neither will do environmental data unless you purchase the WeatherDot attachment with it. I was really hoping the AB mini was going to do both environmental and wind. Some maybe having Bluetooth connection bug issues. You can download an app called. NRF Connect to jump start it. I had to do this to mine.
I did ask about the Garmin Delta Tactix watch. It is supposed to be working with it. I’m going to try and get mine working tonight. If I can’t I’ll call Monday and discuss my issues. Once I get it up and running I’ll gladly share how I got it to work. If anyone is interested. I know for me I dislike buying an item that doesn’t work how I intended it to work.

I've tried several times and cannot get it to connect to my Garmin devices (Foretrex 901 AB and tactix) despite being on the latest firmware.

The whole system and communication sucks with these devices. Someone needs to take a page out of the Apple (even Google) ecosystem and create devices that work seamlessly and flawlessly. It's really sad and disappointing that in 2025, we cannot own firing solution devices that JUST WORK. Whether is software, hardware, or firmware issues, the face that these devices cost $$$$ and do not work correctly is maddening.

Bought mine with weatherdot. Just waiting to see once it gets here. Hopefully you can get it to work on the TD. I'm interested with that setup, as I got the same. Let me know what you get going. I'll do the same once I receive mine.

I did get the AB mini to pair up with my Garmin Tactix. Now I need the app that I downloaded to install on my watch. I’m not getting any live readings yet. But I’m not going to stop playing with it just yet. I will call garmin Monday if needed.

As far as I am aware only the Tactix 7 and Tactix 8 models and similar in those generations can support the Calypso Mini. I could be wrong, but that is my understanding.

Make sure you update the firmware for it. They have a separate app for that.

I did download an app for it. I see it on the Garmin dashboard on my phone. Just can’t seem to get my watch to show the app yet. That is the struggle I’m going through now.
Doc, are you talking update firmware on the mini or the Garmin?
