Short version - I have / had a SF 212 (older fast attach 5.56 can). I have an FH on one rifle, and a brake on another. I shot 200 - 300 rounds through the can with the FH, then swapped to the rifle with the brake and headed out to go shoot. Mindful of the fact that these two different devices leave different carbon build up patterns, I typically scrape the inside of the can when swapping. In this event I didn’t, b/c it felt like it was fully seated and latched tight.
I shoot in mountainous terrain.......... 1st round - launched it over the side of the mountain - @ a 40 degree slope, heavy timber, tons of underbrush, thick with poison oak. I have spent @ 12 hours on two separate occasions grid searching. Bupkis. I am either going to have to step on it, or need to wait until there is a major fire in the area to find it. Maybe I will get lucky just before it snows.
I called the BATFE to report this as missing. I am to write them a letter notifying them of such loss, and a second one in the (unlikely) event that I find it.
On a positive note, sounds like BATFE is trying to implement changes and streamline the process. Maybe I can get a replacement inside of 12 months.
The take away - If you’re not on a square range, don’t be in a hurry. Take the time to clean the deposits, secure the can, take an additional second to try and wrestle it off before firing. Otherwise, it may be the last time you see it.
