I'm pretty ignorant about gassers, especially 'big bores'. Saw that CS Tactical is selling the CMMG Mk3 CBR (38AEA9A) with 16" SS barrel, 15" Keymod handguard and SSA Trigger and got my interest piqued.

Pretty sure its no GAP-10, JP LRP-07, PredatOBR, LMT MWS, POF 7.62, etc...but then again, neither is the price.

So...any reports on accuracy & reliability of this specific model?

CS Tactical's website is so slow it makes me want to stick an ice pick in my temple.

For 2000, I dont know. I think there are a few others out there at that price point that I would be more interested in.

Sig 716 has gotten decent reviews, but I dont think its a "precision" rifle per say, but the groups I have seen from it have been decent.

A few of the DPMS guns get good reviews.

The S&W MP10 gets good reviews, but again, maybe not a "precision" gun.

You can build one on a Mega Ma-Ten with Key Mod for probably under or right at the 2000 price point as well(900 for the receiver/rail setup, 400 for barrel, 300 for BCG, 300 for stock, parts kit, etc...).

For 2400-2500 if you can find them at that price the LMT MWS is a no brainer. If I was looking at 2000 for a CMMG, an extra 400-500 to get into an MWS would be an easy choice for me as I have had great success with mine.

I have owned one of the older MK3 models, and they are a great value in the 308 gasser class. Very reliable and would feed anything I put into it, including MFS and Brown Bear.

I had the SS barrel, not the wasp coated (Melonite) and it shot 1.5-2MOA with FGGM, which considering what it cost and the role for the gun, is pretty good.

The two "weakness" of the gun are the Barrel (not match grade, but your also not paying premium barrel prices) and the CMMG 2 stage.

The CBR comes with a SSA, so that takes care of the trigger and not really sure of the newer barrels.

For a Carbine, DMR, or hunting gun, its a fantastic platform. If you intend to try and compete against OBR's, GAP10's , MWS's, then you will want to replace the barrel with something like krieger or bartlien.

You could buy one for $1700, Buy a Bartlien/Krieger/Lija and throw it on there, sell the old barrel for $200 or so, and have a gun that will shoot as well as a Gap10/OBR for over $1000 less.

Lets be honest here. 95% of how accurate and AR shoots is the barrel. The other 5% is trigger and the idiot driving it.

I plan to grab one of the CBR's around tax return time. Price out the parts, and you quickly realize how great of a value it is.

The mk3 cbr's come with stainless steel match barrels, also the Giessele Super Semi-Automatic (SSA) 2-stage trigger is awesome very crisp and right on the money. A great value for the rifle.

mk3.jpg

shoots 3/4 MOA @ 100 yards with 1-4 optic with mag-tech match ammo all day

1. 3 shot groups arent really indicitive
2. Not all shoot that way, you may have just got really lucky
3. Find it hard to belive with mass produced value ammo like Mag-Tech
4. Everyone on the internet shoots 1/2 MOA groups with 9mm at 1200 yards....

I had already posted above, but the only issue I had with mine was a need for a slight adjustment of the keymod rail (loosen and just a nudge to the left) to rectify maxed out windage on the BUIS I threw on the thing (don't we all have a box full of those somewhere). Not a thing to complain about, I am pretty happy with it.

I still feel like I got more than I paid for...and I paid a little more than what you are looking at.

Well said...and influential on my own purchase.

Hey guys,

I've been watching this thread intently because quite frankly I am also between the CMMG and what we all seem to be referrign to as the "Lewis Machine-and-above" class of rifles. I agree that once you pass the 2k mark, y o might as well keep going. BUT, I wold say that the CBR is a GREAT BASE MODEL. Meaning, its a proven DMR (not I don't say sniper rifle...its not a bolt gun or a crazy high tech military grade semi-auto .50 cal). If yo invest 2k in this rifle, right off the shelf you're going to have some things that I believe people in this forum MAY have overlooked (and again, forgive me if Im overplaying these features as I AM from California). But if you get the top end CMMG AR-10 you end up with some very nice features to build from. he site is down (I can only hope beacue a new lineup is being prepared for launch), but I know that you end up wth a full-length rail (useful), a Geiselle Trigger Group (to my mind, pretty damn fancy - shoot it as fast as a full-auto if you get your rhythm down), and a SOCOM muzzle-break with threaded adapter (shhhhhhh).

So for me, this is the rifle of choice. No, bear in mind, I d not have the majesty of the Midwest, the South, or any number of beautiful, renegade territories at my disposal, so Im in a position to try and get great groups on 100 yards at some crap range in the Bay Area, or take a day trip somewhere and try to dependably touch 700 meters 9correc em if I'm wrong).

To me, the CMMG CBR sounds like a GTI: you get a rock solid base model, and all the upgrades are at your disposal. The more you put into it, the more you get out of it. Put a better barrel on there, a Nightforce scope or what-have-you, and why wouldn't we be able to hit 1 grand with something as affordable as the CBR?

I say all this from an INEXPERT poitn of view, a point of view that i feel may annoy, but is valuable.

I also say this because I'm a heartbeat away from buying my first AR-10...and dont really NEED to, having built up my Tikka T3 to the razors edge.

Thank all for this thread. its a good one. I would call this a discussion of budget DMRs. Or, "How to upgrade your budget sapper to a Precision Rifle"

Thank you all.
