coating a bolt

So I am planning on coating my 5r. For the barrel and action I am going to use Duracoat or Ceracoat (sp). But I was talking to my gunsmith about coating the bolt and he did not think it was a good idea to coat it with those because of the fit of the bolt in the receiver and how the thickness might affect it. He said I could look into getting it done with black oxide (i think he called it). He did not seem to know enough about that to be sure. What have some of you guys used to coat the bolt on a stainless gun? does duracoat actually build up too much thickness? I thought it went on really thin. Will it rub off with opening and closing the bolt? And what about black oxide? since it is an oxide that sounds like some sort of controlled corrosion will that make the moving parts in there too rough to slide against each other right?

Thanks
Eric

Re: coating a bolt

I got my first Cerakoted action (700 SA) a couple of weeks ago.
It functions as slick as glass. I haven't noticed any wear yet, but it's only got 100 rounds through it so far.

Re: coating a bolt

I have around 1500 rounds through my rifle, since I duracoated the bolt. The only place where I see a rub mark is on the portion of the bolt that rubs against the next round in the mag.

Duracoat is some funny stuff. It really does continue to cure for a LONG time after you apply it. My barrel has a couple of dings where the duracoat chipped (for lack of a better word) off. Just very small areas. I did those within the first week after having coated it. It's been a couple of months now, since I coated it. It's super tough now. I was going to recoat my barrel last weekend, so I wanted to strip it back down to the metal and just do it all over again. I tried navel jelly, MEK, acetone, and whatever else I had in my shop and nothing touched the duracoat. I've heard that some paint strippers meant for epoxy based paints might work. I'm going to have to try that next.

lube the lugs yes, but not the bolt body. the post is about coating the bolt body.

Robar NP3 looks interesting....

would also me interested in the ion process.</div></div>

The IonBond process is pretty cool. Alot of AR guys, including myself use it on their BCG's.

It bonds to metal on a molecular level so its extremely thin. Only microns thick so it does not affect the fit of parts that needs to be placed over it or slid over it,(bolt). Its also easier to clean.

I have been lubing my bolt with gun oil, then wiping it off after a while.

Some time ago I noticed whitish scratch-like lines down the side of the bolt.

I don't know what causd them, maybe I dropped the bolt or it was in a too-humid atmosphere for too long.

I still apply gun oil to the body of the bolt as well as the lugs.

Is this a bad idea and could it have caused the scratch lines?

It is a Rem 700 bolt.

Re: coating a bolt

I had a few of mine Duracoated with the new SL (self lubricating) Duracoat and stopped lubing my bolt at all as I have discovered I just don't need to. Wouldn't use it on the whole rifle, but on the bolt body and head it works great. Use it on the inside of the action too, makes it s;licker than snot too.

Re: coating a bolt

I cried a little on the inside when I read you were going to coat that beautiful barrel and action
