I was wondering if anyone had suggestions on a compact scope to serve dual duty on an M1A out to 700 yards and a .22 trainer out to about 200. Both rifles will be fired mostly from offhand so a forgiving eyebox and wider field of view trump glass clarity. The Nightforce 2.5-10X32 is perfect but a little out of my price range. I'm looking for options in the $600-$800 range that have similar features but not necessarily as great a glass. The M1a will see some hunting/field use so extra durability is always a plus.

I'd prefer a objective diameter around 32mm, but will consider 40mm. A 30mm tube would be nice since I already have the rings for it.

Oh yeah forgot to mention that. If I decided to go up to a 40-42mm objective the 10HD or 3-9 would definately be candidates. I used to have a 16X that I liked very much. I'm just trying to see what other options there are.

Being able to dial down the power (FFP not required) and illumination are always nice though. Maybe I'm just wanting too much for the price range.

I just got a couple of the Weaver 3-10x tactical scopes for some 1022s. It has mil/mil adjustment at the 10x setting. You also can get a free back pack from weaver (see promotions on their site). They are on sale for $299.

If I understand this correctly, you are looking for a scope with a 32mm or thereabouts objective that has exposed knobs and some sort of a mil-dot or similar reticle, right?

That is not real common. Leupold makes a 2.5-8x36 MR/T (basically a gussied up VX-3), which is a pretty decent scope and should work for you.

Pride Fowler makes a 3-9x32 scope (RR600-2) with their FFP holdover reticle. I have not tested this one, but I liked a couple other scopes they make that I spent some time with). That should work well for your M1 out to 600 yards or so.

Nice, I had just looked up the pride fowler scope. Seems to be a possibility if I can get used to a bdc as opposed to turrets. I looked at the Mr/t but while FFP is not necessary, matching turrets and reticle are. Does anyone have experience with the durability of pride fowler scopes?

Re: Compact scope around 10X

Alot of guys rave about the new PST. I have no experience on them but hear they're quite nice for the money. Search the for sale section and gunbroker.com and you may find an IOR 2.5-10x42 for around 6-700 used. Glass is superior to NF although not as robust. Hell of a value for a quality optic

Re: Compact scope around 10X

You can do this with any scope that has a mil reticle and SFP with moa turrets.
Measure 41.88” and mark it so it is visible at exactly 100 yards. Turn down your magnification ring until 10 mil fits that measurement. Now mark your power ring and/or tube and you will have a MOA system with each mil now equaling 4 moa…

Poor mans MOA/MOA system.

Re: Compact scope around 10X

After doing a little more research, I see that the 3-18x42 SH edition IORs are really not much bigger than the super snipers or 2.5-10x42 IOR. I know it's considerably heavier but weight isnt that big an issue. They are about the same price as the 2.5-10 nightforce as well. Anyone have thoughts on it? I've heard about issues with the eyebox at high magnification, what about at low mag?
