Anyone ever try one manufacturer's sun shade on another's scope? If they're both 56mm, do these manufacturers just f&*k with us by making their thread patterns unique so we can't use someone else's sun shade? I've got an Athlon Ares ETR inbound and have a Leupold 56mm shade here for a Mark 5HD. Obviously gonna try it...but wondering what everyone else's experiences have been as I doubt I'm the first to give this a whirl.

You might try searching generic sunshades at Amazon and eBay. Incidentally, looking at the specs Meopta publishes for their Optica 6 line, I noticed they provide the thread pitch and inside diameter of their scope's objective bells. It sure would be nice if more scope makers would offer that info, particularly when they don't make a sunshade for their scope.

The vast majority of lenses, cameras, riflescopes, spotting scopes, etc. have a standard filter thread at the front to allow the use of filters or lens hoods (sun shades). Filters come in a variety of fairly standard sizes (diameters) where the diameters from 40-some to 60 or so come every 3mm and then up to 85 or so are every 5mm. The thread pitch use in these sizes is standard and I have tried various filters on a wide variety of lenses and scopes without any issues over the decades. If you match the proper diameters, they should work. Of course, it's always possible that some riflescope maker uses a different filter thread pitch on purpose but that would be weird.

For matching the diameters, I take the diameter of the lens and add 6mm. So for my 56mm lenses, the filter I use is a 62mm. That is not a hard a fast rule. Sometimes it's 4mm or less.

I believe on the weaver tactical, you can get a NF NXS to fit.

On my Minox, I had to purchase a sunshade from another member. If I remember correctly, he said it was an S&B shade but fit perfectly on my Minox.

Yeah it's pretty common to use other brands...

Same here - I don't know what pitch Athlon uses, but I had a shade and Tenebraex caps that screw into a Trijicon and they don't work on the Athlon. We know Leupold and Trijicon don't work.

I'm curious this information as well because I have an extra 50mm sunshade from an Athlon Ares BTR that I no longer need. Finding someone who has that scope isn't so easy but if I could market it to a wider audience of scope users, I'd probably find someone in need quicker.
