Gunsmithing crowning a savage barreled action?

I took my rifle apart last night so I can separate the action and barrel. plan is to chop it a few inches and recrown it.

so looking at it, I got to wondering, can you take the trigger assembly, and the magazine body off the action and turn it the entire barreled action?

Both those parts are pretty easy to remove. On the trigger just don't lose any of the small parts/springs.

Have you thought about using the Borka muzzle crowniing tool so you don't have to take everything apart?

it's there any benefit to adding a new, flat ground recoil lug? that might be the only reason I'd pull it apart.

If you have the gauges for reassembly, then a new precision recoil lug is worth the $25-30 (unless the gun shoots well right now, then I'd spend money on ammo)

I'd have to order a headspace gauge along with the lug.

well, the barrel nut won't budge.

Smack the barrel nut wrench with a hammer.

I tried, and it just spins in the vice. I think I'm going to cut the nut off.

I had the same problem with a barrel vise. Switched to an action wrench and never looked back.
