Curious to hear what you would sell

I may be in a position where I need to sell a rifle. I was curious to see your feedback on what you would let go based upon the following.:

Rifles I currently own:
- Custom Rem 700 .300 WinMag w/ #6 straight taper Douglas Air Gage barrel in a Manners T5A stock with DBM
- Custom Rem 700 .308 w/ #5 Hart barrel in a HS Precision Thumbhole stock with DBM
- Rem Model 7 6mm - Stock manu. rifle in wood stock and blue barrel (Will not sell this rifle. It was my very first rifle given to me from my Dad.)
- Rem 700 5R .223
- Rock River AR-15 with several upgrades

My typical use and shooting:
- Most of my shooting is just fun and hunting
- Hunting is mostly just whitetail deer, maybe some hog and misc.
- No competitions
- Typically don't shoot further than 300 yds bu thope to get to venture further out soon.

Based upon this I was considering selling either the Rem 700 5R .223 or the custom 300winmag. My reasoning is that I already have a .223 in my AR-15 and just due to current political happenings I think I would keep the AR-15. The .300 winmag is a pretty heavy rifle. I carried it this season, but since I recently got the .308 from my gunsmith I think it will serve my uses better. Plus I don't need that large of caliber for whitetail or my range of typical shooting.

So with all this in mind, which rifle would you let go? Thanks and I look forward to reading your feedback.

I agree, but I always like to hear other perspectives. Sometimes it helps me. Sometimes there are factors or ideas that I hadn't thought of.

Get ride of the .223 bolt gun keep the 300 Win Mag just because you don't hunt anything bigger now doesn't mean you wont have the opportunity to in the future. You already have a 223 and you have enough bolt guns... seems simple to me but I'm not attached to any of them

I thought about selling the winmag instead of the .223 Rem 700 5R just cause the bolt .223 is fun to shoot and doesn't costs near as much to do so.

I agree and if I think I can do it I will most definitely will. Just weighing my options for now.

Definitely not selling the 6mm. However, selling both the .300winmag and the 5R .223 would free up a good bit of cash. Hmmm?

I would sell either the .308 or the .300 Win Mag... probably the .308.

There isn't anything the .308 does that you can't do with one of the other guns.

Ditch the bolt 223. And probably even the Win Mag. With your uses and range the 308 seems the most well rounded. The 223 doesn't do anything the AR won't. And the Win Mag is over kill until you get out past 800.

I'd keep the 300 and sell the 5R 223. Way too many people own ARs and aren't 100% proficient with them. I'd argue that whenever you want to shoot cheaply, take out that AR and get awesome with it, even if it may not be a precision gun. Sell the 5R.

I'd say get rid of the .223 bolt as well especially considering you already have your AR chambered in .223. Do it and don't look back! Good luck man, hopefully you can figure it out and not have to sell any of them. I know the feeling, it's like getting rid of your kid or breaking up with a girlfriend when you sell ANY gun.

The cost to feed the remaining rifles might be something to consider as well. I'm partial to .223 bolt actions because I can practice a lot for relatively little. That way I don't have to cut back as much if things get tight.

+1...as much as you can. Sometimes you need to keep the wolf on the other side of the door or, in my case, generate some money to get to a new job.

But, if I had to sell, I'd dump the .308 first. Then the .300 Win mag. Now you are down to 3 useful rifles. Since you like the 6 from your dad, keep it. Next, let the .223 Remmy go. With the .223 AR you can rebarrel it to a number of different calibers compatible with the system if you choose to go away from .223. More options still if you want to upgrade to the 6.5G/6.8 SPC spectrum.

If you weren't bent on keeping the 6mm "As is" I'd look at re-barreling it to 6mm BR.

I'd sell the 5R to start and the 300 WM second. Hold onto the AR as long as you can and ditch it during the next panic if finances are still tight.

^ I agree. It'd be almost impossible for me to replace a gun after I had to sell one. That said, I don't know your situation. I'd sell the one that I don't shoot or the one that would cover all the funds I was in need of.

Sell all but the one from dad and buy a Winchester (30-06) and use the left over for the needed funds. That way you have a great rifle in a very useful caliber as you only use it for hunting.

Lose the .300 if you only shoot to 300 yards. You have no legitimate need for the cartridge. If you can't afford to keep all your rifles, you certainly can't afford .300 Win ammo. I'd spend most my time shooting .223 Rem out of the 5R if I were you.

Bad thing about selling guns, you have a price in mind, now try to get it. I've made money on guns, but I held on to them for 10-20+ years.

I'd say you made a wise decision, had I seen this thread when it was posted that's what I would have suggested too. 308 for hunting and targets and 223 mainly for targets since you don't currently shoot beyond 300 yards.
