CZ 457

Unless your getting a smoking deal on the CZ Varmint, you might be better off to buy a 457 MTR in the manors stock and replace the barrel if/when you feel the need. Seems the barrels are easier to find than the stocks. That said, you could also buy both rifles and parts out what you don't want. I've found that resale on CZ 457 components is pretty good.

My third 457 gave a good showing the other night for a short barreled gun. ARA Factory class, 5 card match. 2440 Agg. I’m relatively new to bench rest so I was thrilled with that.View attachment 7775927
and I bought my fourth 457 at the match. There isn’t a 24” barreled 457 @1 or VPT to be had in the country so I think I scored with this used one. I would have preferred a VPT, but I wanted a longer barrel to better buck the wind.View attachment 7775928
How does front rest work? Is the stock screwed to it?

Take a look at this. The description says 16.5" barrel but the picture clearly shows a longer barrel. I wonder which one would actually show up? I am not interested in the 16.5".
It's common for adds to have a picture that is not 100% accurate. Both the description and part number on the Cabela's website refer to the 16.5" model so that's what should ship. FWIW, 24" are getting really rare .

That’s not a rest. It’s a Sinclair F Class bipod. It connects to the sling stud, very popular in ARA factory class. Here’s my Varmint MTR at a match.

That's what I'm afraid of.
I bought a 457 VPT a couple of years ago - already had 457 American & Varmint MTR, both of which I'd fitted & chambered Shilen ratchet bbls for - but wanted the Manners stock, since my V-22s & Rim-X rifles are in Manners PRS1T stocks, and I like them a lot. The VPT's 24" factory bbl had accuracy issues, so instead of rebarreling it, I just moved the MTR/Shilen bbl'd action over into the VPT's Manners stock, then put the take-off MTR bbl over into the VPT action. It headspaced fine in that action, and actually shoots just a little better than it had when I had it in the MTR action.

A few months ago, I was browsing Manner's online inventory, and they had four of their fully inletted modified PRS1T stocks listed for the CZ457. There are none listed currently, so you're probably SOL where getting one in a hurry is concerned. And once you see the list price for this stock, buying a complete 457 VPT becomes a more attractive way to get into that stock.

I’ve posted picture of this rifle in the past, started out as an MTR w/ a vortex gen 2 3-18. But as I’ve become more addicted to shooting it, it’s evolved. Hindsight being 20/20 I wish I would have just bought the cheapest 457 offering - as I wasn’t expecting to want to do much to it.

Anyone have a proof barrel for theirs? I just recently received it and haven’t shot much out of it aside from bull cheaper ammo. I did pick up some Midas +, and 2 different SK offerings but haven’t had a chance to try it out yet. Curious as to what the barrel tends to like.

If you had bought the cheapest offering, what stock would you have used? I don't really want to go with a chassis and can't find many other quality offerings.

Well since all the actions are the same, you’re paying for the barrel and stock. And considering I don’t use the MTR stock or barrel, it didn’t make sense financially to pay for that particular rifle.

I don’t have any experiences with any of the chassis; I’m more of a stock kind of guy. One that’s usually readily available and reasonably priced is the KRG bravo, and the occasionally pop up on here used for decent prices. I was going to go that route before I found this Manners.

Haven’t had a chance to use the Manners yet, just got it about a week ago, but I’m sure I’ll love it. I have a Manners on my 224v bolt gun and love it.

Find me someone who doesn’t like a manners though and I’ll show you a crazy person 😬

So here is my dilemma, recently received a CZ 457 Pro Varmint and show it twice in 85 degrees breezy 50 yard range with SK Rifle Match. I had sighted in at 25 and was comfortable. The 16.5 in barrel was good, didn't keep the target so no proof. Placed it in a KRG Bravo stock torqued to 35 lbs. It did well, quite well. Here is the situation though, I was able to place an order on a 20 inch Lilja barrel for the CZ. I'm wondering if I will see any real improvement over the factory barrel. Am I tempting fate screwing on the Lilja? I could have shot better; cheek weld was always off, bag to small, that guy next to me screaming etc etc etc. Thoughts?

regards,

I decided to keep Lilja shims at .003 now to find out what speed.I zeroed with Eley match at 1065. Doesn't like 1067, good groups with 1084 shooting about 3/4" high which I expected. R50 ( 1092) good groups but 1 1/2 low???, R100 ( 1135 )almost center??? Scratch my head?? Couple days later it was decent enough to grab chronograph . Magnetospeed V3, new batteries, sensitivity 7, 10 shot groups. Eley match ( 1065) averaged 1104,( 1067) avg. 1100,( 1084 )avg. 1128, R50 ( box 1092) 1085 that why it shot low, R100 ( 1135) 1126 ( could only get 2 before it wouldn't eject fried shells). Eley was faster and it slowed down RWS?? Went home had lunch, rested my eyes for about 1 hr.. Snow tomorrow- so I grabbed my other CZ with Bartlein barrel and back to range ( same town 15-20 min.). Same settings on MAgspeed, mostly 10 shot groups. R50 ( 1092) avg.1054, R100 (1135) avg 1086,SK long range (?) avg 1055,Fed. gold medal UM (1080) avg 1066, Midas +(1076) avg 1003,RWS special match( 1085?) avg 1032????? So Bartlein barrel with match? chamber slowed down every round I fired. Why- anyone

Good eye! Yup that’s SGL 43. Are you local?
Not exactly. I live about 55 miles away in Jersey, but I like going there. I spent about five hours there last Tuesday sighting some optics and trying out a new MagnetoSpeed. There are no public ranges anywhere close to me.

I'm curious if that range was there before people built houses so close. Even on a cold day like last week the range was busy the entire time.

I’m about a 30 minute drive but it’s not too bad.

I was there Monday and Tuesday of last week, busy both days. Tuesday the temp gauge in my truck said 16° and I got there at 7:30, set up my stuff and waited until 8 to start shooting. By the time 8 came around I was one of 4 guys there.

Elverson is an OK SGL. It’s absolutely filthy which is why non shooters oppose them. There’s brass and steel cases everywhere. Nobody pulls their targets down and they just get shredded on the backstops. I commonly shoot at SGL ranges since there are a few I can get to within a 45 minute drive. 43 might be the worst of them.

Idk why but both times I’ve been there, there’s been guys shooting groups at 25 yards with 30-06, 7mm and a 300 win mag. I dont understand it. I asked the 300 win mag guy if he was sighting in he said no, just testing his setup and making sure it still shot good.
He never brought it to the 50 or 100 yard lanes either. Had to be one of the most bizarre things I’ve seen there

That does sound bizarre. I agree, that place is filthy. I also go to 205 in New Tripoli, which is a lot cleaner and about the same distance for me. 43 has the 25 yard lanes which is why I went there Tuesday, but there were pistol folks using them the entire time. I really want to go to 141 in Carbon for the 200/300 lanes. 2.5 hours away though, so sometime I'm going to get a hotel out that way and spend a couple of days. I'd love to try my 457 out there.

I look forward to seeing what you end up with. I have a couple that I wanted to put a bigger scope on just for accuracy testing, I just didn’t want to do it bad enough to buy rings and rail just to test, but if I know it’ll work I might. I have a 457 Trainer that I think might be more accurat than the MTR and VPT MTR I have.
Sorry this has been awhile. The PDC chassis arrived yesterday. For rings I ended up getting Warne Mountain Tech mediums. Plenty of room, although I'll need to save for the expensive OEM throw lever from Vortex as I don't think there's room for the after market polymer ones.

I’ve shot at New Tripoli and 141 in carbon county, I had family in weatherly which is right down the road. I like 205 because it’s got the sporting clays field, which is hard to find. Both of them are worlds better than 43. I didn’t shoot the 200 yard lanes at 141 though. The back stops were in good shape so I dont know if they dont get used much or they just happened to replace them before I was there.
I’ve also shot at the one outside of Bloomsburg that was pretty nice too, but definitely farther for you. Unfortunately we don’t have too many SGL ranges too close to the NJ border in the southern part of the state

I see you completely removed the rear sight.
HAHAHAHA, yes, because I never thought of just taking off the sight but leaving its base on the barrel until I read that! 🤔 Those holes have been bugging me ever since. Maybe the original ring/scope combination I had on there was lower, I don't remember. (EDIT: must have been lower because it looks like the entire sight could fit under the current scope setup.)

It's not hard to take off. The sight is spring loaded into slots on either side of the base. Press down near the front of the sight, slide it towards the rear of the rifle, and it pops out. The spring can slide out from the bottom of the sight, so just remember which way it goes. Then there are two very short machine screws holding the base to the barrel. CZ used way too much thread lock on them and there was (is!) a hardened puddle of it on the barrel under the base.

But... you probably don't need to take the base off at all. Thanks for mentioning it, because I just checked and there's plenty of room under the scope for the base. Time for me to check on how close the zero will be when remounting those Warne rings, because now I really have to take the scope off and reinstall the base.

I believe in the earlier posts, the guy stated he had to HAVE a sling for what he wanted to compete in.
Someone else said they wouldn't use one because of lost speed during stages.
You may have to have one per the rules...... Do you HAVE to use it??
Although I never ever break rules.... that would be cheating!! I do bend them to the extreme limit.
IE: I'm allowed a maximum X FT/LB of energy while shooting. The rules allow for +-2% for chronograph variation.
I use it all if it helps with accuracy.

As far as SK fliers.... Since I look to myself first for any missed shots, I would be shocked if I get 2% fliers. Knowing me,
I would never tolerate even 5% from any ammo, even cheap trash ammo.

To be candid, I feel like most people blame the equipment before they look at themselves. The scope, gun, mounts are all machined
pieces. The bullet is made to very precise specs as is the case. What's the biggest variable?? The powder?
It's only my opinion, but I believe that the human element would count for over 97% of all variation neglecting the wind etc.

Originally I had 600 inches.... thanks for the catch GKG

Possible on this target is 3000. I knew shot #2 was trash before I saw it hit. My gun, scope and even the wind were not big factors
in this target. If you do the Trig you will only be disheartened. So I will do it for you.

If you shoot 1800 inches ( 50 yards ) and you want to keep your bullets inside of the .50" OD circle so you can score 100 points
than you have to keep your gun / cross hairs on the target and keep it there with no more deviation than .0044* right / left
and up / down. That is .28" ctc at the target.

Given a=.14 and b=1800,
c = 1,800.00001
α = 0.00446° = 0°0'16" = 0.00008 rad
∠β = 89.996° = 89°59'44" = 1.57072 rad
h = 0.14

right-triangle.png

Being accurate is difficult to do under the best of conditions.

You may be interested in looking into the SCATT system that Olympic shooter use. It's basically a laser on the bbl. that can be tracked on the computer to see the entire shot sequence. Just prior to, during and after. The track looks like an earthquake is going on. It's a amazing that
they shoot as well as they do.

Your not doing one thing wrong..... your doing 20 little things ever so slightly wrong. I would guess that as soon as the trigger breaks,
you stop pulling on it, you relax your hand just a bit, you push the butt pad forward with your shoulder, your cheek pressure changes.
All in those critical milliseconds while the bullet is still traveling in the tube.

Quality practice. Bad practice just reinforces bad habits. It's winter here in Tn. I would suggest reading. Often you will read something
and not understand it. But another guy will state the same thing it in such a way that is crystal clear.

I have never got 3000 either.... But I never stop trying!! This target was shot with my 1971 Annie that I recently sold.

I wish you best of luck because it's more fun to beat someone that's a good tough, solid competitor.

gkgeiger.... Thank you for the catch. It seems to me that one of our Mars landers (1999) lost for an equally stu-pid mistake.
600 inches.... what was I thinking ??

""NASA's Mars Climate Orbiter was lost in space last week because engineers failed to make a simple conversion from English units to metric, an embarrassing lapse that sent the $125 million craft fatally close to the Martian surface, investigators said yesterday. ""

One of my friends dad uses a 300 win mag for deer hunting. He once showed me a photo of a huge hole blown in the deer,
about 6 inches in diameter, and exclaimed that, "" And that was the entrance wound "" He has around 24 skull caps hanging from nails in his pre-fab trailer home. That was the top of the skulls which included antlers and not attractive mounts.....
He was an easy going guy that drank all of the time. Why does someone feel compelled to brag about their HUGE and POWERFUL gun.
I'm not positive but I don't recall him using a scope either. Personally, I don't get it !!

Guys with the CZ 457 MTR VPT with the Manners stock from CZ I'm getting ready to put an Area 419 Arca Rail on my rifle and I see most guys are attaching in front of the action screw using 2 T-Nuts drilling through the stock/barrel channel. I know on other Manners Stocks like the T4 - T6 some of them aren't completely flat on the bottom from the front action screw forward and Area 419 gives you a shim and longer action screw to attach the Arca Rails by your front action screw then 1 T-Nut drilled through the stock. How are you guys attaching 2 T-Nuts or front action screw and 1 T-Nut...? Anyone got any pics handy...? Just dont wanna go blazing holes through the stock till I figure the best way to mount.

419 has a video on this on YT. Too busy to link right now.

For the 457 MTR Manners specifically or just Arca Rail install on the normal Manners Stocks...? I haven't found any with this specific combo but Ill double check...
I just installed one in a regular T6. Bought the spacer, kit came with longer front action Bolt and longer replacement bolt for where the barricade stop was on the T6. Added one T-nut in between and also used the existing spot where the sling stud was.

When installing the T-nut, you have to counter sink the large diameter section so that it ends up below the barrel channel. Also had to cut down the 5/16-18 low head hex cap screw they supplied to replace the one that comes in the stock barricade stop. Other than that, not a bad install.

I have the KRG Bravo and installed the Anarchy mag filler. It's good quality if not a bit light. It went in with a slight cant towards the from and no amount of adjustment would make it sit flat. The 10 round magazines work fine as I also have the extended/wide release. It seems to sit just a bit too low in the front and a washer between it and the spacer provided with the Bravo my prove a good solution as otherwise the 5 round magazine does not sit right and lock in. My CZ is shooting quite well at the moment and I didn't care to undo the front action screw to continue to try and get a better fit. I have a Lilja barrel on the way and when the action is out of the chassis, I will play with the spacing and get it to sit right and have the 5 round magazine lock in because it should.

That's what I like about the BScar 25 MOA rail on my 457 MTR - with an Athlon Cronus 4.5-29x56 in TPS TSR low rings, I don't need any sort of stock pack; in fact, I have a very solid cheek weld on the comb after getting my shooting eye aligned with the Cronus.
After reading through from page one i found out what i need for my grandson’s MTR Varmit, now to find base and rings in Canada lol as most outfits won’t ship anything to do with firearms because of all the red tape they have to go through, thanks for sharing

MDT in B.C has base for 457 and rings too at decent price. Or if you want 419 rail GoBigTactical also in B.C has them.

Has anyone attached the ARCA rail to a 457 pro Varmint SR 16.5 on the Boyd’s stock. Looks like a slight arch in the stock that may cause issues ... curios if anyone’s been successful with it before I start looking at swapping chassis.

Here is mine, MTR all dialed in with Area 419 Gear. That group was shot with Eley Match EPS. She also likes to eat SK Standard plus!
What scope is that and what rings, asking as I’m in the process of setting one up for my grandson so far we have the MTR varmit and the vortex venom 5x25x56 , I’ve been reading where guys are saying that the area419 rail is to high but it looks like I’ll have to go that route as i can’t find the Dip or Scar rails in Canada

The rings on that rifle are the Seekins High 1.26" rings and the glass is the new Vortex Venom. You can not beat the Venom or Strike Eagle at their price point. Super bright, super clear!!!! This is the first scope I have owned that when I shout paper at 50 yards with this rifle that i can see tiny pieces of confetti leave the target after ever shot!

That’s the same scope i have, when done it’ll be identical to yours, i also have the Athlon Midas Tactical 6x24x56 it’s mounted on my T1X, i actually prefer the Athlon the cross hairs and dot are finer . It’ll be interesting me with the T1X and my 18 year old grandson with his CZ lol
