Dealer lost my order so back to the drawing board.

This is my first post. so i would like to thank the people who make this place happen. and the fine folks serving in our military.

Ive been waiting for 4 months for a 700 sps aac .308. i was going to drop it in a aics ax chassis, And get a night force scope, suppressor and be done. i was wanting to keep it under $4500 well the local dealer lost my order.

So i made a 150 mile round trip to oklahoma city this weekend. and i found a 700 aac. but they also had sako's in .308 and 300 mag. this is my first long gun. Ive never been a hunter but have always shot. me and my dad bought quite a bit of land this last year. So long range target shooting and deer and hog hunting is something im wanting to get into. we deal with quite a bit of wind here on the western plains of oklahoma. and most of my hunter friend's say Im gonna want the 300 mag. quite a few of them are using 338 lapua's.

so what's you guys opinion. Should i stay the course and do the 700 aac in .308 build. or go for the sako in 300 mag. i loved how the sako felt in my hands. the trade off will be in glass though, and ill still may go over my budget. i will probably have to go with a vortex viper instead of the night force, if i go with the sako. summers here and im ready to shoot. so im gonna make my move in the next week. Thanks to all for your help.

If you were going to run a 23"-24" barrel I say stick with a .308 and run the 208 Amax's.

The Amax's do really well on game. If cost IS NOT a concern, then go 300WM but I'd run a suppressor or brake.

Re: Dealer lost my order so back to the drawing board.

If you're asking Remington vs. Sako..... thats a no brainer!

If you're asking between 308, 300WM and 338LM... tougher call that depends on:

If you reload
How much rifle experience you currently have
How much $$ you want to spend on ammo.

Ultimately though, I think you'd probably be best served with the 308. Don't get the 338 unless you have plenty of 1500+ yard shooting to do.

Re: Dealer lost my order so back to the drawing board.

I don't reload. the 338lm is not a option right now. i can't afford that. 300mag i can afford to shoot. i was just stating a few of the hard core hunters around here are going to that (338lm). and that they would go with the 300.

As far as a distance goal. i would like to hit steel at 1000yds.
(That's everyone starting out goal right) easier said than done. my rife experiences are mostly ar-15's ak-47 and sks. never had a bolt action long gun.

i know hunting i wont be taking shots near that far out most of the time. i know the .308 is cheaper and not as hard on you to shoot. but i trust these guys and know what kind of wind i will be dealing with here. I am leaning toward the sako .300 i just needed some informed opinions. because im having to start over. on this. thanks for the quick replies. keep them coming.

Re: Dealer lost my order so back to the drawing board.

Not trying to be an ass, but a 338LM for white tail is ridiculous. I like the 300WM and even that is a little overkill. If you are just starting out in this and 1000 yards is your goal get a 308. If you end up really enjoying it then pick up a 300WM or 7mmRem later to stretch it out a little further.

Re: Dealer lost my order so back to the drawing board.

I stand by my initial suggestion of 308.

You need a moderate cartridge when beginning your long range precision career. If they offered a 260 or 6.5 Creedmoor - well, that would certainly be on the table...but they don't.

The 300 is a badass cartridge, but it's punishing to shoot in terms of recoil, ammo cost, and it's tough on barrels. The 308 will last for at least 5k rounds, maybe a LOT more.

The 300 will slice through wind much better - no doubt about it, but you'll get twice the trigger time per dollar with 308, and that's what you need.

Re: Dealer lost my order so back to the drawing board.

308 for sure. Cheaper, less recoil, great to load for if/when you get into that. It will kill most anything you need it to AND will work just fine on 1k steel. 300 mag is a nice round, but to be honest mine does not leave the safe much compared to the 308 and 260.

308 in the wind is good for you : ). Don't use a magnum as a wind bandage. That said, it WOULD make it easier to get hits, but you could also get the same hits with the 308. You will just have to be better with the wind call. Going to be up to you if you want to put in the trigger time.

How about a 260 rem? If you can find a rifle in that chambering, I think it would definitely be worth a hard look. I know mine bucks wind way better than any 308 load I have, AND it recoils less. Factory loads can be had, and it will not cost you as much as the 300 mag to shoot or load. Of course, if you are punching down larger animals at longer ranges, then the 300 will have an advantage on energy.

Re: Dealer lost my order so back to the drawing board.

Ok. ill trust you guy's and go with the .308 that was the plan from the start. i think i will go with the sako instead of my original plan though. those are some damn nice guns. thank's to all

Re: Dealer lost my order so back to the drawing board.

Your welcome. You'll love, Love, LOVE the TRG22.

The only SAKO brand accessory to consider buying is the bipod. But, the Atlas is very nice and cheaper to boot.

Look into NEAR manufacturing for a brake (should you want one), and a scope rail.

Enjoy.

Re: Dealer lost my order so back to the drawing board.

You can get a TRG for a really good price if you look around. Check eurooptic.com to start. These guys have a very large selection of TRGs, and most of them are in stock. Personally, I would have gone with the 300 WM, but the 308 will do just fine.

What suppressor are you looking at?

Re: Dealer lost my order so back to the drawing board.

Definitely go with the sako 308, you will enjoy it far more then the rem700. Buy quality once and never question if its you or the equipment.

Re: Dealer lost my order so back to the drawing board.

Great thanks for the recommendations on accessories I am very interested in a folding stock. Or a compact gun. while on gun broker today I saw a gap gladius/night force combo ready to go in stock not far away from me. I'm sure for cash money I could get a deal. But I would be going over what I want to spend by a grand. this shit always happens to me. I'm sure I'll go check that out next weekend.

LOL...from a fella wanting a TRG22 instead...

Magnums are appealing, until they bite you even though you feed them well.

Re: Dealer lost my order so back to the drawing board.

Where are you in Western OK? I was at H&H this weekend and they have 2 TRG 22's in stock. One in Tan 20", and one in Green 26". If you get bored in a couple years, rebarrel! Wish I could snatch up the green one.

Re: Dealer lost my order so back to the drawing board.

Yeah I saw those at h&h. I thought the 26" was a .300 guess I was wrong. I think gene sears in El Reno has sako also. I'm near weatherford in the western part of the state.

Re: Dealer lost my order so back to the drawing board.

I remember Sear's had at least one tan trg as of last week, although that doesn't mean there aren't more in the back.

I would bet their a bit cheaper than h&h too.
