This isn’t new, and they don’t just pull them from prison. The Fire Crew Inmates, volunteer, for a little bit of pay, and a whole lot of “Earned Good Time”. They get trained, outfitted, and are on a short leash (Fuck up even slightly, and it’s back to the slammer with no good time). In one camp where I was Medical Section, they slept on the water bladders holding waste water from the kitchen (1,000 man camp), because it was warmer. They worked strictly Day Shift, and being all men, were quite a power-house on the line. They’d be at my tent at 0400, to get ankles taped, and dressings changed, because they didn’t want to go out sick, and needed the work. They were still convict assholes, but the amount of work we got out of them was kind of amazing.
The Indian crews were also impressive: Mescalero Apaches, came in on the same fire. What impressed me most, was their brotherhood. Anyone getting care (again, taping and blisters, etc) would potentially ask me to see to one of the other guys, because he needed something. Happened a lot. They took care of each other like my memory of the Infantry when I was in VN.
The one departure from the “woke” BS we are seeing in the LAFD, that I should mention: Another Apache team was al women: The “Iron Maiden’s”. They took no shit, hit the lines like they were supposed to, and while clearly not as strong, or big as the men, they certainly were tough enough for the job. Same blisters, and sprains, same work ethic, and a lot less complaining.

IT’s hard work. Out of a thousand people working the line, a percentage come back in with injuries. Most are nuisance but definitely a sign of how hard the work is, even with White’s Boots or other heavy duty foot wear. They wear gloves, bandanas over their hair and face, Nomex clothing. You see ankles, knees, shoulder strains, back pain. Smoke inhalation is not unusual either, and they work all night (or day) before coming in to see us. Acute serious injuries go straight to the hospital, we were just keeping the fighting force in trim. Imagine hoeing your garden, you Quit every few stokes to take a breath, right? They are wielding a much heavier tool, and go all shift, (Polaski or MacCloud), and set up a rhythm, and don’t take near as many breath breaks. Not nearly. And then a small group will come in all covered with red, from being too close to a slurry drop. If not frankly injured we still took care to document the exposure.
These guys and women are the closest thing to Infantrymen that I’ve seen. They work slightly injured, all season, even work sick, when a cold runs through the team, and rarely give up. I eveacced a guy who caught a rolling rock right in the breadbasket, on a night crew. He didn’t even hear it coming. I suspected a ruptured spleen, the rock was about the size of a basketball, and when I got to him (I was actually on the fire line with the line boss), his abdomen was rigid, and he didn’t look so hot. We trucked him to an open area, and called a helicopter in to take him straight to the Hospital in Redding (from near Happy Camp).

I remember there was a 4th generation rancher in the area where I grew up that would intentionally burn off sections of his land with the intention of getting rid of the rattlesnakes that bit his hunting dogs. They were not 'controlled' burns but quite the opposite.
