I had to boost the comb height on my new Ruger American Rimfire Target model that I plan on using for NRL22.

After some searching, I found this link:
https://www.luckygunner.com/lounge/make-improvised-rifle-cheek-rest/

Which I'm sure has been posted before, but I didn't feel like buying a sleeping pad for only a few small pieces.

After looking around the craft section at my local Walmart, I found 12x9" sheets of craft foam. For 33 cents a piece, so I bought 4, and ended up only using 1.

Cut strips roughly 1 inch wide, along the 9" side, folding them in half. For me it took the whole sheet cut into strips, folded and stacked, and taped using a few strips of electrical tape to get a proper sight picture.

Used the standard 3m vet wrap, had some beautiful tactical teal to wrap it to the stock in the proper location.

Just figured I'd share my find to save some money with anyone else looking into this cheap mod.

Hi Guys,
I have made a littel cheekrest for my Anschuetz 22.
Heat-formed it directly to the stock, then covered it in smooth leather.
It is made of acrylglass as it is stiffer than cydex.
I glued a piece of foam inside to adjust the elevation.
Works well for about a year now.

Not to highjack the thread but I used the vet wrap and pad of choice deal for about 2 years, it worked pretty well. The only 3 things that I didn’t love about it was that 1) if I ever needed to clean my rifle I had to take the whole deal down. While $3 for vet wrap is pretty cheap if I didn’t have any on hand I had to go buy more. 2) Aesthetically it looks pretty DIY. 3) Whenever I would shoot with anyone else and let them use my rifles the cheek heights weren’t really adjustable in the field. Recently, I decided to install flush cups into the left side of a couple of my rigs which forced me to reconsider the vet wrap idea since the vet wrap was now potentially going to be in the way of the flush cup on the butt. I’ve got an XLR AR butt stock and when I was looking at it I thought “Man it’d be perfect if they just sold that cheek piece by itself.” Well it turns out that they do (XLR sells them for $25 on their website) and for about $30 (w/ stainless threaded offsets) you can have something that is permanent, adjustable, removable, and comfortable. There’s a couple people/threads on the Hide here that have done it as well. Simply works awesome. The screws that come with the cheek piece are 1/4x28 so I bought some 1/2” 1/4x28 threaded stainless steel inserts/standoffs. Mocked everything up on a couple stocks, drilled some holes, Devcon’d the standoffs in, and once Everything was dry screwed the cheek pieces on. Works perfect. I didn’t put painters tape around the holes that I drilled because I was being lazy, if you do you won’t get Devcon stuck on your stock and it’ll look more pro. I thought it’d wipe off if I just wiped it right away...I was wrong.

Lots of good ideas. I used an oak block and oak dowels then hid them under a stock pack.

I have in the past used SAM splints. It gives you about a 1/4" of rise per piece you put on. It doesnt look pretty. Im sure if you had a cover for it, it would look a lot nicer in the end. They are very malleable to fit any stock.
