Do you shoot your AR in the rain?

So I am moving and tomorrow is my last chance to go out and shoot with some good friends of mine. The weather is calling for scattered showers and if it's anything like today it'll be a real light rainfall all day. I'm hesitant to get my rifles wet but I would think they could stand up to elements pretty well.

What do you guys think? Call it off or quit being so protective of my guns?

EDIT: Shooting in the woods so no chance of a covered outdoor range.

We just did a comp in the rain and guess what not a single person complained or whined about their high end guns getting wet.

i bet he wishes he just went and shot it, lol. rain is a condition that may occur when you are using your weapon. take this chance to gather info on your weapons performance in this new to you element. when your done, and since you are going to be moving, you will have the perfect opportunity to strip and clean the rifle as well as inspecting it and reoiling it for storage during the move.

and if all else fails, maybe we can call namby pamby land and see if its raining there, you jackwagon

Yes, I shoot all of my rifles/pistols in the rain, snow, mud, etc. If they can't stand up to getting wet, dirty, etc., then they aren't of much use in the long run now are they?

Sometimes I wait until it is raining to go to the range. Train like you fight. The fight does not get cancelled for inclement weather.

Most definitely. I actually prefer the rain because of this exact reason. Down here in Florida I am fortunate to live close to the only 1000 yd range south of the Carolinas, so when it's good weather people crowd the hell out of it. When it's pouring it's the opposite. Last time I took advantage of the rain I had the range to myself for 5 hours. People finally showed up when it stopped and the sun came out, but I was already done and on my way out.

Your gun will be fine. Go out and have a good time.

Taking it for granted you have spent quite some time indoors, I find it safe to assume that at some point you have seen movies depicting outdoors handling of weapons.

Take the opening scene of "Saving Private Ryan"... now, comparing actual photographic and cinematographic material from the landing in Normandie on D-day with the opening scene in the movie, it is safe to say this movie is probably one of the best modern-day re-enactments of fragments of that epic battle.
Bringing it one step further, studying the details regarding use and abuse of weapons and equipment, throwing in the fact that as a rule the soldiers were supposed to retain their current before mentioned weapons and equipment for the rest of a campaign with unknown duration, I think it is safe to assume that provided a healthy dose of maintenance is thrown in, guns are shootable in the rain and other realtively soaking wet environments...

Now, it has been a while since D-day, and those lucky enough to be in the possession of M1s,Mausers,Brens,Stens,Schmeissers,Lugers,Brownings,Colts,MG42s/34s,Wickers and so on along with firearms of more recent development and design can probably testify that these fine pieces of classic military history are designed to specifications and for purposes not so much valued today.
As political correctness keeps spreading like a pleague invading territories previously held by morale and common sense, some even fear firearms will be victimized by this outrageous trend.
Fortunately, modern day firearms are still generally made from slightly more durable materials than cardboard and plaster, so I think it is safe to assume you can venture out in the humid outdoors environment without too much fear for your musket...

I dunno, skimmers have this weird idea that water is what your ship floats on, and being outside in inclement weather is a quick way to not come back.

Bubbleheads, however, simply see weather as an opportunity to mess with the skimmers!

Although it would be a neat way to make the most unique rifle as the plastic trashbag heat shrinked to your weapon on the barrel and around the dishcharge port. I don't know what the hell it would look like with hot brass sticking and melting through the bag...

I went and shot today. My guns got a little wet. It hurt to watch the water dripping off of my AR's but they still work!

Second, I am in the Navy but only training they give me with a gun is a yearly qualification. I'm a submariner!

Thats ok. It's all good. The more you get out and shoot the piss out of them and they get a few nicks and scrapes then you will feel more at ease with them.
It's kinda like a new car verses and older car, you cringe if you get a blemish on the new one, the old one you parallel park by bumping everything.

I would introduce myself Ranger but I'm actually moving on Friday. Heading to Millington, TN.

Smoke, I'm just finishing up a 3 year tour on the OHIO (SSGN). Rolling to shore duty in TN.

I'm definitely not afraid to ask stupid questions and have pretty thick skin. I would say I'm even bolder on the internet but I ask dumb shit all the time in person!

I'll checkout the western washington thread and post the coords for the spot I found in the woods today. Was a pretty good place to shoot.

Aubie,I need to see pics !!! A friend and fellow SH member came all the way from Canada today to shoot my AR15's in the rain after reading your post,we were in the mountains by Baker Lake in thunderstorms and pouring rain.He thought we were a bunch of wimps here in Washington after reading that and I had to prove him wrong because of you.My poor dog even had to sit in the downpour at the firing line to prove American Dogs were not Wimpy either.I sent him back to Canada soaked to the skin and ready to spread the word that Americans really do come out to shoot in the rain.
