I'm way late to this game, and have had the opportunity to gather more information about what happened than others who first posted did.

That being said; I don't care about the background of this couple (unless they were staunch anti-gun). They did what was needed and slept alive in their own home that was left standing, and with their possessions that night.

Out here in my neck of the woods I greet everyone who ventures onto my property with a gun. I don't make a game of brandishing it or point it at them (that would be rude), but a pistol is always on my hip in a holster. It's nothing personal, but police response is over 30 miles away and I'd much rather initially give someone who knowingly drove through my ranch gate the hint that they might not want to fuck around on this place...rather than have to deal with them later because I looked like a soft target. Doesn't mean that I'm not polite either, and I'll always start out with a smile. Some people genuinely are lost...some look like they got lost on the way to their meth dealer too though.

Sometimes people put too much of a personal perspective on potentially dangerous interactions. Just because you wouldn't try to injure/rob/rape/murder someone else who you're having a disagreement with doesn't mean that the next guy will be as kind-hearted. Having dealt with some of the worst of the worst in Fallujah and Ramadi, I trust nobody. It helps to keep you alive.

Having my experience, I damn sure wouldn't trust my safety to just sitting it out in my home if I were in this couple's shoes. Too much risk for damage beyond some welfare recipients scribbling the( Bureau of Land Management) on a couple of their walls before simply leaving. Those "protestors" showed their intent when they went through the gate.

Yes Ken and Karen flagged each other a couple of times. Yes, they could have been a little more appropriately equipped. Yes, they obviously could have done with a little more training outside of their 70+ hour work weeks...but they adhered to rule number one of a potentially lethal encounter...they brought a gun.
