Some pics....

And here's a pic showing PoI shift.... about 2" down and 1.5" right, at 100 yards. This handload actually runs about 0.50 MoA off benchrest bags. This time I was shooting off a bipod, with no rear rest. I could see the target jump about 1/2" with each heartbeat, so the poor group are me, not the gun or the can....

Nice. Enjoy the gas and increased smell in your face. I have to put a towel over the charge handle when I shoot mine suppressed. I even did the handle mod.

Looks good though.

Spray the back of the upper with a release agent and put a line of RTV sealant on the charge handle and lock it into place. When the RTV dries, pull the charge handle back and wipe off the upper. Cheap mans "gas buster" handle.

I like it. I shoot an Gemtech HVT on my SASS and boy does it makes a mess of the rifle and brass (as in really dirty). I pretty much have stopped firing the semi with the suppressor and just use it for my bolts now. It isn't that it doesn't work fine it is just a lot to clean up. Lazy I guess.

If you don't mind sharing whats your load data that you use for your AR-10 Grandman?

I just got a LR-308 (24" barrel) and did a little range testing on ammo today. I learned that 42 grains of Varget with a 168 SMK just won't cut it. I just bought some 168 A-Max but I was wanting to work out the SMK first.

Very nice Rifle by the way too.

Re: DPMS LR-308 w/ Ops Inc 12th (pics)

KYshooter338,

Its 24" stainless steel barrel. Other then the trigger and added scope its a factory DPMS LR-308. 24" 1/10 twist with A2 stock.

The scope is a Millett LRS-1 6-25x Illum. Rect

Hey SwatSgt, I just noticed your location and I'm slightly West of you, (near Hickory) where do you take that badboy to stretch it's legs? I'm similarly rigged and scouting places to shoot. I shoot at Rankin Lake in Gastonia on Saturdays usually.

The brake came with the can from Ops.

The collar was custom built by Ops. I had to give all the dimensions to make it fit - bbl dia, thread length, distance from muzzle to gas block.

They machined the collar to fit my bbl dia of 0.815, so they should be able to custom fit yours. Ron Allen said they don't do alot of AR10's but I'm not sure why. Their collar fits my DPMS LR-308 perfect.

I've heard these Ops collars are hard to find. Adco is supposed to be a dealer. But you'e prolly already checked with them.

168gr Hornady A-max (HPBT Match is good too, but not quite as good as the A-max) over 44 gr of Varget. 2.800 COL.

Benchrest primers do seem to make a difference too.

So far the only 500+ that I've managed to find is Camp Butner in Butner NC. If anyone knows of somewhere within a 75-mile drive of Hickory, I'm all for showing up and sending a few downrange.

Re: DPMS LR-308 w/ Ops Inc 12th (pics)

Matt.Cross,

I have a 100 yard range that I can use anytime I want to all I have to do is show up. If no one else is using the range then I can take a buddy to block the road way and I can get about 150 yards.

Grandman, and Matt.Cross

I am currently working on getting a 500-600 yard range set up. Good friend of mine has more land then he knows what to do with so as soon as I can get up there and get it worked out we can see what we can do. He has 600+ acres so I hope we can find some where level enough to work.

Right now I'm limited to 100 yards on the two ranges to which I have access. One is $8/hr to shoot, 1-5pm on Saturdays. The other is free to shoot whenever within reason, call ahead. I will PM you to get in touch, I don't wanna derail this fine thread.

200 yds is fun but....

No derail Matt.Cross. Why bother having the gun if not to shoot it?

Re: DPMS LR-308 w/ Ops Inc 12th (pics)

More than anything, I need to be shooting with somebody good at driving this machine. I've had about 5 range sessions with mine so far, totaling 300 rounds sent through the weapon. I'm getting better with every range session, but it would be nice to have someone to point out details I may be missing. Right now I'm hovering around 1 MOA @ 100 yards but I know the LR is better than that and I currently am not. I am very comfortable with a handgun, but the rifle changes the whole game and I'm gonna have to learn it. So yeah, a suitable range and shooting buddy are just what I need right now.

It may NOT be you.

Tell me about your gear. Do you use a front and rear and bag? Shooting off a adjustable front rest? Or do you use a bipod? Shooting prone, or off a bench?

Do you handload? Absolute MUST to drive that gun to its fullest performance.

Tell me about your breathing. Do you inhale, hold (to oxygenate your lungs / bloodstream) , exhale to the point of a zero breath state, and then begin your squeeze? Each shot ya need to run this same process. Are you willing to back out of a shot that "doesn't feel right?" If you backout, ya gotta start all over. Even benchresting, breating is a big key.

Off front and rear rests, I can get that 0.50 MoA. Using a bipod, bump that group up to 0.70 to 1.00 MoA. When I get sloppy with my mechaics,, here comes 1.00 + MoA. Shooting prone puts stresses on an old, fat guy like me. Off a bench will produce better groups.

There's lotsa little things that can help.

Re: DPMS LR-308 w/ Ops Inc 12th (pics)

Matt,
I agree with Grandman about the point of owning the gun is to shoot the fine weapon but its ok I got the PM I'll reply back in just a few minutes. Also what ammo are you shooting and what type of weapon system? I looked over the thread but didn't see what your rig was.

And Grandman company is always wanted on the no butt in at all. I'll make getting the range set up on the top of the list so I'll see what I can work out.

Re: DPMS LR-308 w/ Ops Inc 12th (pics)

Ok I think I got this worked out now,
44gr.jpg

The droped shot was me not the gun. Thats with 44.0 Grains of Varget, 168 grn SMK, and Fed. LRM primers, Fed. Gold Medal Match brass (1st reload on the brass) Shots at 100 yards

Re: DPMS LR-308 w/ Ops Inc 12th (pics)

Ok I guess yall want to know what that was shot from sorry,

DPMS LR-308, 24" SS barrel, Millett LRS-1 ILL rect. All factory but the trigger was worked by a gunsmith who is a good friend on mine.

Re: DPMS LR-308 w/ Ops Inc 12th (pics)

My current operating rig is as follows:

DPMS LR308 Upper and Lower, 24" Fluted SS Bull Barrel
JP Precision adjustable trigger, just over 3 lbs pull
JP VTAC Rifle Length FFT, 6 o' clock 2" picatinny
Harris S Series Bipod, attached to a LaRue QR sling stud
A2 Stock w/ 1" stock extension (I'm lanky.)
LaRue LT-158 QR one-piece scope mount w/ 10MOA built in
Mueller 8.5-25x44 Optic w/ 3" sunshade, Mil-Dot reticle, and 1/8" audible turrets.

I try to shoot from prone off the bipod with a rear sandbag whenever possible. I don't always have the rear bag...

I try to shoot at the bottom of a relaxed exhale, but I'm bad about not backing off my shots when I should. I'm not handloading yet, I've settled on Federal GMM as a suitable load for serious shooting, but I can't go to the range every weekend with that and if I'm still learning to overcome all my bad habits, doing it on match ammo seems kinda wasteful, though JMHO.

With factory rounds, yer doing pretty darn good. Handloading is the next logical step, IMO.

Shooting is a "discipline." We are ALL working to be more "disciplined."

Well, not to be contradictory or anything, but I've noticed that for every 'flier', I instinctively know as soon as the rifle fires that I've pulled the shot, and I know I'm capable of better. The rifle is quite simply putting them where I am putting them, and that's where the need for a little help with my discipline comes in. I don't have the ingrained expertise that my peers here have, and I feel the need to be exposed to some of that on a level more practical than reading it in a forum or seeing it on a video. Those mediums have their place, but they are not suitable substitutes for range time and a qualified instructor, in combination.

Here's the final target from my last range session, a spur-of-the-moment deal just for blowing some ammo. It's Walmart variety Remington 150gr soft-nosed stuff, not what I usually shoot.
