The government has to know. I can't imagine they would find it okay for unknown drones to be flying over ICBM silos.
Most people can't judge the altitude or distance of a Cessna 172 from them, let alone a UAS that is 1/4 to 1/20th the size.
supercorndogs, I couldn't find anything to link to but I have been seeing them on KWGN Channel 2 News the most. They usually have several during the news but when I checked their site I couldn't locate the clips.
They are cell phone videos so not of the highest quality but do show them well enough that you know they aren't airplanes.
According to the News they need a FAA permit to operate at night and aren't to be any higher than 500 ft. so they don't interfere with airplanes.

Hehe, I'm an asshole by nature, but I'll tell you last night I watched one for 20 to 30 minutes with my binocs. I'm also a pilot if that holds any weight in this discussion. I'm as sure as I can be that last nights drone was above 500' and moving at about 40 mph from west to east. It also had red and green lights and flashing strobe. I lost sight of it what I think would be about 5 miles west of Eckley. The sound is like a buzzing chopper as best as I can describe. I dont know who it is nor care really, but they drive my dog nutz. I don't do facebook, but am told there are 3 accounts following this. Maybe Logan cnty. Sherriff's page has something, as he was told to chill out by the FAA.?

I've heard a Phantom 4 at 1000' AGL....a faint swarm of angry bees. I could in fact hear it MUCH better than I could see it (daytime).

Just skimmed over the article, but looks informative.
We ran a phantom 4 and now an Inspire 1, pig hunting for the last two years.
Wooded fields, no ambient outside noises, quiet quiet quiet.... (like Colorado boonies)
Could hear both at 500 agl, no problem. Big ass mosquito buzz.
Ran coyotes off b4 it got within 500 yards at 500agl.
Ran deer off around 300 yards.
We could hear it 300 yards out at 500agl.
Now, daylight, near the highway, or with other city noises, it pretty much has to be overhead to hear it about 10% of the time at 500agl.
JMHE, others mileage may vary. No problem.
Re post 212 states judging sizes, I agree 1000%, nfw to say with certainty size at distance.
And, I have been involved with 4 and 5' search and rescue drones, with 45 minute air times, they are much louder than the inspire 1.
I couldnt tell the size when it was flying, any more than I can tell with my own drone.
10+ drones is a f'ton of $ if you have NV or thermal.... the 5'SAR drone was 55k with day, nv, and thermal capability. Glad we had a grant to buy it....

And paid for buy the Colorado taxpayer. Its pretty sad. I hear people all the time say, "wind is cheap, we need more wind energy." We pay to build them and are forced to buy their high cost energy. Fee Fee Hickenlooper stuck it to Colorado any way he could; everything was a "fee" because raising taxes would have required a vote and because he would have had to return left over funds to the taxpayer at the end of the year under TABOR.
Really got us good when he combined game and fish with the bankrupt state parks system. A system that went around stole our public land then charged a fee to enter. Now that all the license fees I pay support, I still have to pay a fee to enter. Fuck that. I will not pay to enter my own public land. It was better managed by the Army Core of engineers, and game and fish, back when it was ran by wildlife biologists.
200 and some million in pot taxes collected, I still have to air down the tires on my truck just so I won’t smack my head on the roof because the roads are still so F-ed up, and they won’t drop a dime to fix em. Then they say “well we need to repeal TABOR if you want the roads fixed”.

And, people I do know (even “alternative energy” advocate liberals) speak of a low level hum that they emit. Linked to chronic migraines and other issues.
IIRC a town in MA or ME tore some down that were put up in town due to the issues. The towns people demanded it and were able to win.

About two years ago I was out on my side porch well after dark.
I noticed three BIG aircraft moving along the treeline about a mile West of the house. Low and slow with about two flashing lights on each - front and rear.
No sound. Nothing. I could hear crickets, but not them.
They followed the treeline in about the same direction that a small rural highway follows and they went out of sight.
I watched and waited, because the military base turned foreign security services training facility is very nearby, and my house lies between where they come from and where they went. I knew they'd be coming back. These are always local short flights.
In a few minutes they followed the treeline going back. Still all but dark and still quiet.
I flipped on a very powerful JetBeam that I use to scan for deer and other things and aimed it their way. Within seconds I could hear helicopters where none were heard before. "Ha ha, I got you!", I proudly exclaimed.
Another second and the lead bird turned on a light coming back my way.
The open area around my house is about ten acres, and it all turned instantly into near blinding daylight.
I turned off my light and waved, and took my curious ass back into the house.
I've seen them a couple of times since then. I don't fuck with them anymore.

Year and a half ago, took off out of PDX in the evening headed toward SoCal and got lased while turning southbound. We reported the laser, and a jumpseater who lived in PDX identified the neighborhood down to the street and block.
We landed and on taxi-in the controller told us Portland PD wanted us to call them regarding our illumination event. My Captain calls the provided number and the guy on the other end of the line asked us for lat/longs.
Uh, we were climbing through 5000' in a turn and kinda busy, was the street and block not specific enough for you?

Moving anywhere else is no longer a solution, the Dimwittocrats have turned their states into such hellholes that even their most fervent believers now don't see any other solution but to migrate from the likes of California to other states like Idaho, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Texas, ... What they used to refer to as flyover country, they are now snapping up because our real estate even with the speedily rising prices they cause is: "such a bargain." Moving to other states only accelerates their take over because it thins out the population of those capable of reasoning and comprehension. Another thing they do as soon as they have even a sliver of a majority anywhere is to raise property taxes to evict the remainder of those who have lived in that region before they rushed in like locusts, and to finance all the nonsensical social programs they are accustomed to from California which turned it into what it is now.
Shouldn't they be testing that stuff on a military reservation like Ft. Carson, or Pinon Canyon, or in White Sands, NM but not over civilian areas, regardless how sparsely populated, especially when they hover over people's homes? Sounds like some contractor is bucking for law suits and it explains why the Air Force "isn't tracking anything on RADAR."

Regardless of who is running the drone activity, if it is nefarious why would they be running with nav lights on? Why beg for attention when it is so easy to run blacked out?
Anybody with the tech and budget to run that quantity of drones in an organized manner could easily minimize their ability to be detected.
Just thinking this is too blatant and doesn't fit the idea of bad guy/conspiracy.

Again speculation here... If it is a Defense Contractor doing testing as they claim (speculate), then that tells me that the AF has systems (anti-drone) in place at the missile silos in NE Colorado, that's why it's being tested there? Otherwise, it would make more sense to test the systems in places like White Sands or Nevada test range where there would be less human contact.
Also, Radar has limits. Curvature of the earth is a big obstacle to long range Radar, and at close distances, small targets that are close to the ground are hard to track and aquire unless you a have specific systems like mmWave radar, which is limited to short range, and typically used like in attack helicopters.

In any case if it is a military contractor who did not come forward when the question was publicly posed there won't be any cooperation from FAA, Air Force, Army, or Colorado National Guard in regards to tracking with any form of RADAR be it Apaches, Artillery RADAR, Ground RADAR, or Air Defense Artillery RADAR; DARPA doesn't like to run public educational programs for obvious reasons. Hopefully they'll be done soon so we won't get the loons that beleaguer Roswell, NM and Rachel, NV turning Colorado into their primary hang out because of the added weed attraction.
